I'm confused! What's the thinking when a magazine which consistently aid and abet the beauty industry publish a cover with an anti-makeup message? The way I see it, Alicia Keys and her crusade is absolutely at odds with the beauty industry.

And I don't think the cover works as she's not making direct eye contact.

oh so she is wearing makeup after all?

i'm confused

A quote from the cover feature, up at Allure:

'Her words, her music, her political activism—even her decision to do the no-makeup thing (this is the first time she has worn makeup in an editorial photo shoot since last spring) and to let her hair be free—are part of a cohesive whole. “I’m not a slave to makeup. I’m not a slave to not wearing makeup either. I get to choose at [any] given moment. That’s my right.”

Why go on such an elaborate crusade in the first place? Cheap ploy, if you ask me.

The rebel edit looks interesting, the best so far. Love the fact that they're identified by name, and all the girls look great here.

The thing I don't like about this whole 'Alicia Keys without makeup' thing is that she is overusing it for publicity even though it isn't completely true. She only stopped wearing foundation because she had bad acne - she clearly continues to use eyeliner, mascara and discreet lipstick. And now her team turned it into a whole "Alicia is a makeup-free woman, liberated from society norms" fiasco which is a lie and a confusing one at that.

Cover wise, I don't think I like the red Allure masthead with the outfit. There is something that bugs me about the whole color combination. It's like they wanted it to be demure but still pop. I would have preferred a brightly colored outfit - maybe something in primary colors a la the Christopher Kane sweater she wore to death on The Voice.

“I’m not a slave to makeup. I’m not a slave to not wearing makeup either. I get to choose at [any] given moment. That’s my right.”

LMAO. This is the best kind of "activism".

Firstly, the beauty industry isn't just make-up. Hair care, body care, nail care, supplements, grooming, men's grooming, teeth whitening, skin/body treatments, procedures....Skincare is a multi-billion dollar industry.

Alicia glows. The overall look of the cover is too busy for my taste but I love Alicia's smile and pose.

I admire Alicia for having the confidence to go without covering her so called "skin flaws." I don't think her no-make up crusade or allure advocating her crusade is confusing.

I think her message is an empowering one. I've known people who are slaves to make-up and use it as a security blanket, a means to hide behind rather than a tool for self expression. This movement, long in the making, has really hit a nerve and in our digitally connected and image obsessed world, couldn't be more relevant.

It is important that people feel just as confident in a full face of make-up as they do with only a layer of moisturizer on.

Alicia feels empowered and wants to share this with others. She is advocating for freedom of choice, shift in perspective, of self-awareness. She wears make-up on her terms AND doesn't wear it on her terms; she embodies both physical projections with confidence.

There has always been deceptive, misleading, beauty industry claims and advertising which subliminally or blatantly preys on women's insecurities. But in the digital age consumers have the power to demystify and inform themselves and dig deeper if they so choose.

What I take away from Alicia's no make-up movement is to not take it literally, as anti-make-up. Rather a message of self-love through holistic, balanced and informed approach to beauty and life.

“Alicia gets regular facials, does acupuncture and she eats healthy and exercises,” says Dotti when I get her on the phone. “She knows you have to invest internally for your skin to look great externally. It’s also about how you process your energy. She comes from a verystrong place and she comes from a very kind place. That in itself is super important. But it’s about the choices she’s making and the products she’s using. It’s the work of a good team.”

Photo with the pink backdrop would do a better cover. The actual one is an eyesore.

Don't know what the article is about, but this Is Botox Feminist? headline just make me puke... Like, leave women alone with all this pseudo-activist drama...

Don't rate Alicia Keys whatsoever and certainly don't rate this cover. Major downgrade and a total flop from Allure this month.

I like her "elaborate crusade." May not be a pretty or neat job (in terms of consistency/purity) but somebody needs to do it!

I actually love this, very natural and love the pop of colour in the makeup shots

This woman is S T U N N I N G

That smile! Come on, she's glowing from the inside out.

I'm in full agreement with ellastica - I don't find anything confusing about her no-makeup stance. Clear as day, to me.
