if your first gen iphone still works, i don't see the reason to switch over to 3G.
At&T's 3G network still needs a major improvement, for it to make a significant change in your phone.
the phone itself is not much different than the first gen, other than having 3g, and a universal headphone jack.
i would just hold on, until the next release, sometime in the summer again.
of course if you have the money to spend, go ahead....

I also use Balance to keep track of my spending!
I've been trying to be really careful not to drop mine. The glass on my brothers phone is cracked but luckily it's just in the corner not where the actual screen is.
My parents got me this today. They got me 16GB just to be safe.. and I don't run out of space.
