Does anyone know where I can buy a duffle coat that is less than $150? Is it even possible? :(:(:( Infact does anyone know any place that sells duffle coats? I can't find any anywhere.

I've always been interested in how trends evolve incountries like Australia, New Zeeland etc since the seasons come in different time of year..

how dependant is it of the fashion capitals (milan, paris and NY) and stuff like that.. Because I've seen some pretty good designers from Australia and I wonder if they 'rule' the magazines and the trends more than the ones from Milan or Paris..

I would love to know more about that

^that's a really interesting issue! There are definitely designers who do their own thing and not merely 'follow' northern hemisphere trends such as Akira and Easton Pearson. On the whole though most Australian fashion is quite drawn on o/s trends. The thing is that because of the 'seasonal' lag, it gives 'designers' more time to look at what works and doesn't work internationally and use the best bits for themselves. Alot of 'designers' fall into the trap of assuming nobody in Australia looks at global fashion, hence you willl see someone like Charlie Brown (blahhhh) producing exact knockoffs of styles, eg Fendi B bag, and putting her own name on it. That's probably a more extreme example, but design self attribution is a very common fault of many Australian designers. I really love it when an oz designer does their own thing..that makes me proud.

i agree, marriseel, about certain aussie designers recycling o/s stuff. by contrast, it actually makes me notice the more creative designers. alice mccall, collette dinnigan, fleur wood, isogawa... have aesthetics that are immediately recognisable whereas some others don't seem quite as unique because they cut-copy trends already on the global stage (that said, i don't think taking inspiration from a tested formula is a bad thing, except designers should re-interpret them in some way).

however i've found recently that we are actually ahead of the northern hemisphere in some respects. if you think about it, northern fashion shows take place just before the corresponding season in the southern hemisphere. & it's extraordinary how quickly chainstores can adopt the particular details, shapes & looks, straight from the catwalk.

most chainstores will buy their designs from suppliers based in south-east asia where this stock is mass-produced & the same product can be sold to different brands in other countries. it means that it is entirely possible to buy something now, that a teenager in a city across the world will buy in half a years time.

if you think about it skinny jeans started taking off in 2005 over here & have been at a saturation point for quite some time, whereas i'm under the impression that america has only just reached saturation point?

just if someone could compare notes with me, these are the things are big, in a very mainstream way, over here in our current A/W season which we're in the middle of. have these trends taken off in your winter or are they tipped for your next?

smock dresses, smock tops, swing & trench coats (usually double breasted, very volumous shapes, cropped sleeves), patterned tights, ankle boots (positively ubiquitous!), high-waisted skirts, round-toed-platform-soled heels, grandpa cardigans, the colour grey, quilted leather or leather substitutes, oversized buttons (still), pockets on everything (still!), pinafores (still!!), knitted berets, plaid, mustard yellow accents.

a few items that i see a lot & might or might not be trends: high waisted skinny jeans, high-waisted shorts over stockings, thigh-high boots, thigh-high socks. gosh, it's all about height these days.

anyway, would anyone care to comment on where they see/have seen these trends going in their part of the world? these are observations from around sydney & are very much on the mainstream side of things, the first list is a pretty comprehensive definition of what i would find in a chainstore.

thanks for the info! =D

one question: is it easier for people in Australia to be 'ahead' with trends (trends from the major fashion capitals fashion weeks) since they show around March, and we have to wait until maybe October until we can try certain items and outfits while in Australia AW has already started..

I love Alice Mccall, I was at urban outfitters two days ago and I saw this dress that was so adorable and I kept thinking to myself that it looks like Alice Mccall and when I looked at the tag it was! =) she really does have a certain style..

I find sometimes that i see something in a collection and there is no way to find that type of item for another year, but often the styles are in the stores as the collections happen
