aiu is a lower tier school. In fact I even remember hearing about a controversy with that school because it promises a higher job placement than it delivers...much higher.

With the various good schools there are I dont know why anyone would consider one of those "career college".

Ohhh I see. Well I would have tried to get into a school like FIDM, but I have no idea how to draw (and it seems that you gotta know how to draw since they have this project you have to complete upon applying) and my grades in 10th and 11th grade sucked to their standards. So I'm just trying to get into some kinda college that can teach me a lil something until I'm able to get into the good schools.

what about fashion journalism?

Hi, this is my first time posting. I'm thinking about getting my M.A. in fashion journalism and have been looking into the London schools, mainly CSM & LCF. Which fares better in name dropping when trying to get a job in NYC?

Well since you asked, I answered. I think one would be better off going to a school such as a community college where the credits are at least transferrable into an accredited college or university. I really dont know if aiu is accredited -- do you?

A lot of people think fashion will be an easy program to study, yet it requires a great deal of discipline and commitment. You might do well to get the required foundation classes at a community college and then transfer to a better fashion program. good luck.

which fashion school is the best in england?

MsMiniCooper,

can you expand on your negative view re: you time at middlesex. I have heard many good things about it, infact far more than LCF. I have been warned strongly against moving into the halls of residence in the first year, as they are in a miserable area. But I have heard the current course is actually very strong. i would be very interested to hear some more detailled views from yourself. thanks

Yeah AIU is accredited... I've been researching them some. Well I'm kind of in a bind because my parents refuse to let me attend a community college, because both of my older brothers. The both dropped out because community colleges out here are so filled up that people aren't able to get their required classes and whatnot and they're pretty much going to school everyday for nothing. The only other options I know of is Academy of Art, the Art Institutes, and some college out here called Otis Parsons... have you heard of it?

Btw, don't think I don't appreciate your answers, I do

Crayons...

You'd be better off at the Art Institutes, or Otis ...rather than AIU.
AIU doesnt really have any credibility in the fashion industry.
Also from what I understand, Otis doesnt have the relationship with Parsons anymore.
Why dont you look into those.

fidm

Thanks marrimoda, you've helped me a lot. :flower: Well I've already applied to an Art Institute... we'll see how that goes. I'll just have to research Otis some more.

i dont know where everyone is getting this "saint martins dont teach you" thing from, they do teach you, and believe me they drill it into you, months ago i couldnt really make mach but now i can make any standard garment with my eyes closed! they harness your talent and then push you to where you want to go! i have to say it is an excellent school. i'm sure sean (acid) will say the same thing

yea he tells the truth!, st martins is good, the people i study with arent AS great as the ones i was with at marangoni though i must admit!

especially all them northerners! aahaha only kidding Matty!

I am planning to apply Parsons, for the major design and mangement .
I finished my high school last summer.I am now studying TOEFL,so my english is not very good.Hope you guys understand what I am talking about.

I have some questions, and I really need some advice,
what are parsons looking for on design and mangement students? Is it easy to get in?
And the home work,do u have any advice?I have an idea, but I am not sure if they'll like it.so what are they prefer?
How about the scholarship?I know it's hard to get it,especially for international students.but how hard?and what can I do to get it?
I am not rich at all.so the scholarship meant a lot to me.

Thanks.

Does anyone have an opinion on the Marangoni summer design program? I have been looking into it quite a bit.

Otis College of Art & Design

Otis College has beaten out Parsons many times in the past reacent years in CFDA awards including the title for Best In School which Otis currently still holds the title for!

Let's see...

I'm in my Freshman/Foundation year at Parsons, and I'm relatively happy with my choice and I'm planning to major in Fashion Design.

For a few of the prospective students (I think there were some?:(
If you're building a portfolio for Foundation entry (which is required for the Fashion Design program, unless you're a transfer student) I highly reccomend having a portfolio that is based around primarily observational work. I went in for an interview, and one of the best tips another student told me was to bring my SKETCHBOOKS. This way you can show off your creative side as well as your technical abilities, they're looking to see your creative process and how you experiment outside of highschool art class.

I had about a 75/100 average upon (barely) graduating highschool, but I got a 1330 on my SATs.

Personally, I'm really happy with Parsons; NYC is an incredible resource for any fashion or art student to have at their fingertips, and that's really emphasized in all of my classes, to use it for inspiration and material.
I think in terms of my classmates, I'm a little underwhelmed by the work quality, I guess Foundation partially serves to get everyone up to the same speed and give them time to be sure about their major choice.
We also do have a pretty good career placement program, they put in a ton of effort to get you internships, usually with alumni.

And, as for the Parsons vs. FIT debate, well... I've heard from a LOT of FIT friends that they wish they had a Foundation year, and are already switching majors.
FIT is more of a technically oriented school, while Parsons is very conceptual.
Which means basically the Parsons students have better ideas, but the FIT kids can actually sew.

(Speaking of which, everyone should look out for the Fusion Fashion Show this spring, if you're interested. It's a battle between 15 designers each from Parsons & FIT, should be interesting.)

Anyone who would like more admissions help, just drop me a line and I'd be glad to help. :D

isnt it great you two guys (acid & Victim) go to the same school? maybe you should start your very own "tFS SaintMartinis" thread.

Freshman Direct Entry is actually a few different programs that allow you to get straight to your specific major and course work, as opposed to going through a year of Foundation (which is general art/design classes) and then choosing your major. You can do direct entry for Photography, Design & Management and Design & Technology, I believe.

D&M applicants don't require a portfolio, but you do have the essay. I'm not sure whether or not you need to do the home exam described here:
http://www.parsons.edu/apply/undergrad_homeexam_instructions.aspx
You should probably call up the school Admissions office if at all possible and ask, they're really a great asset to help you with the whole admissions process. (There is a toll-free number, I have no idea whether those work for Canada, too?)

I didn't have to write an essay for Foundation, just a little paragraph describing the design of an everyday object & it's functionality, etc.

I hope that helps a little, I'm sorry I can't offer a lot more because I'm in a different program. You should check out the website as well, despite it being a little...irritating to navigate. Everything you need is under the link on the left that says "Apply".

Good luck :D
