Hands down Fall/Winter 2006. Pretty much every designer was in top form and so many shows that season have become so iconic - McQueen's "Widow's of Culloden," Marc Jacobs' Grunge revival, Prada's angry cool girl, Balenciaga's tour de force archival reinvention, Olivier's heartbreakingly poetic chimney sweep collection at Rochas, etc. Pretty much every show was impeccable.
Hasn't been a season quite so superb since. It's kind of been a slow decline since. Seasons that followed fairly immediately after Fall/Winter 2006 were still pretty good (ie Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter 2007 were strong seasons)...but since 2010 I feel like there hasn't been a real memorable season that had a clear message that meant anything. I think a large part of the decline in quality is the overwhelming number of designers and collections showed these days. Look at the style.com list of designers for the Fall/Winter 2006 season and see how few are covered in comparison to Fall/Winter 2013's insane amount of shows. With that many designers, it really is impossible for there to be any kind of substantial movement or message for the season that is impactful, or even interesting, for that matter.
