Best Sunscreen

Just wanted to note that I stopped by the Lancome counter at Nordstrom, and they said they had no sunscreen, and I should go to MAC

.

Whaaaaat? Their sunscreens are one of their top selling products...I've been using their UV Expert SPF 50 for years and years...it's the best I've ever used. I wonder why they didn't have it...were they sold out?

^ I don't know, but I wondered if you have a product selection not available here. They said they didn't have it ... all they had was some other product, like a tinted moisturizer, with SPF15 ... not what I was after. It's not like sunscreen hasn't caught on the US, though, and the regulations have changed, so ... Next time I'm in a different store with a Lancome counter, I'll have to ask again ...

Mighty strange...I've bought it in the US before though...duty free...and I'm pretty sure it's available online. I hope you have better luck elsewhere.

Sephora has the UV expert, it's very good because of high uva protection but kind of thick and white, although pretty much all good sunscreens are I find.

^ OK, thanks. I don't get why Nordstrom doesn't have it

Forgot to mention, for an antioxidant I use Origins' Dr Weil Plantidote, either the face cream in the winter, or the serum in the summer (both face & hands). I prefer the cream ...

I'm a little bit obsessed with preventing aging and I hope to be a dermatologist or plastic surgeon one day, so I thought I'd share what I've learned about sunscreen after many sleepless nights. I'm not sure what is general knowledge (little of it was to me) so I've made it detailed.

The sun produces UVA, UVB and UVC rays, although UVC is absorbed by the environment so not a concern. UVB burns the skin and causes skin cancer. UVA penetrates deeper breaking down collagen, elastin, damaging skin cells and also contributes to skin cancer. UVA passes through clouds, windows and clothing more readily than UVB so just because you may not burn doesnt mean your not damaging your skin. This includes darker skin tones.

SPF measures protection against UVB only in two ways. The main purpose of SPF is to tell you how much longer your protected as opposed to no sunscreen. A pale person can be out in the sun for about 10 minutes safely, so SPF 15 would protect you for 1.5 hours. However this is where it gets confusing - you shouldnt count on any sunscreen to protect you for over 2 hours because photodegradation breaks down the sunblocks/sunscreens. I dont really understand how that works with spf's that are supposed to last longer than 2 hrs but I prefer to apply too often than not enough. SPF also measures the amount of UVB protection - 15 absorbs/blocks about 93%, 30 adds 4% and 50 adds another 2%.

There are physical sunblocks that reflect light and chemical sunscreens that absorb it. Physical/mineral sunscreens tend to be less irritating but chemical sunscreens are usually required for higher spf and better UVA protection. There are health risks associated with different ingredients but the general consensus is that the benefits outweigh the side effects so I didnt look too much into it. I've read about sunscreens penetrating the skin and trapping uv rays under the skin and the damaging by-products given off as they photodegrade. Theres also a chemical I forgot the name of thats present in 97% of the population's blood according to the CDC and may cause birth defects, cell damage, and interfere with hormones. There doesnt seam to be a lot of research about any of this and there is such an overwhelming amount of harmful chemicals today that I just decided to not worry about it.

PFA (protection factor of UVA) was recently created to measure the amount of UVA protection, it's measured as PA which is starting to pop up on sun screen bottles. PA+ = PFA 2-4, PA++ = PFA 4-8, PA+++ = PFA 8+. UVA protection is nowhere near UVB but there are sunscreens that get up to PFA 25. Mexoryl is a chemical recently approved by the FDA that has additional protection against short UVA rays and it's one I'd look for in sunscreen, but it's patented by loreal so it's not in many.

Based on what I could find I think Anthelios sunscreens are the best, although every one I've tried except the spf 15 leave a thick white film. I'm trying to find the right balance between protection and texture, so far the xl 50 fluide is my favorite since its high spf/pfa, not as thick and has both the oil and water soluble forms of Mexoryl making it stay on better. I use Shideido spf 35/PA+++ powder through out the day to reapply sunscreen without having to redo my makeup. Antioxidants are also important for sun protection, I like revive serum protectif, dr sebagh high maintenance serum and kinerase c8 cream but there are cheaper options that are good too.

Guessgirl thanks for sharing your knowledge, you'll be a good dermatologist if you decide for that. I run out of my sunscreen and cant make up my mind which one to buy next. I've tried the Anthelios cream many times and i know its supposed to be the best but it makes me so shiny i cant stand it. There were some good reviews for Natura Bisse sun defence fluid SPF 30 and CE Ferulic(serum based)-although that still needs to be combined with sunscreen. Have you heard about them? And what about Sisley's all day all year??:flower:

^^Love NB's Sunscreen. It's the best. Sisley's All Day All Year is more of a moisturizer, not enough protection in it for an SPF.

Khiel's and Lancome have moisturizers with Meroxyl as well, but the spf doesn't go up as high as the Anthelios ones. I didn't have any problems with shiniess with the Khiel's one, but the one I used only had a spf of 15 :ermm:

Has anyone tried Ole Henricksen's Sun-Light Creme? The chamomile version.

I use the Aveeno Continuous Projection Sunblock Lotion, and I love it. :D It's "specially formulate for face" and spf 70. Also, it's only around $10, and you can buy it from any drugstore, which makes it even better. ^_^

Here it is! My best friend in the whole world, P20

Consider your daily sun protection application “done” with Riemann P20 Once A Day Sun Filter SPF20. This renowned UVA/UVB protector will minimise application and maximise tanning for ten impressive hours; leaving you with a lasting golden glow.
Quick drying, extremely water resistant and only needed once, Rienmann P20 Once A Day Sun Filter SPF20 allows for the perfect, safe and healthy tan without the presence of unsightly white marks. Ideal for burn-easy skin this clear liquid protects from as little as 15minutes after application leaving you to bask safely in the hands of this exceptional sun shield.
Directions of use:
  • Apply and allow to dry for 15minutes before exposure to sun.
  • Avoid direct contact with eyes.
  • Pat dry rather than rub after swimming. Excessive rubbing and soap will remove the product; in those situations re-application is necessary.

It doesn't make you greasy or dry. And it is true - you don't need to reapply at all. I've been using this since I was a baby (well, my mum put it on me :D), and I've never had a sunburn in my entire life. I'm very fair, but I don't need more than SPF 20. Very few people do, really. Unless you want to prevent tanning of course.

Sunscreen

As summer is almost here , then these questions are actual :

What is your favourite sun cream ?
Do you use it every day even if it is overcast ?
Better bigger SPF and more Sun , or less Sun and smaller SPF ?
And if you still get Sun burn , what is your best method to get rid of it ?

Fav: Jason Natural Family Block SPF 36
Yes I use it everyday.
I usually don't botther with anything over an SPF 45. The preservatives become more harsh with higher numbers, and my skin is too sensitive.
Aloe Vera, cool showers.

For daily protection Shiseido Extra Smooth cream (SPF 30) or Very High cream (SPF 50). But they lack a bit UVA protection and are a bit whitening, but they are really smooth, don't ball up or get greasy like most sunscreens.
I think EU sunscreens are the best ones, because they are required by EU law to have PPD/IP factor that is at least 1/3 of SPF number and aren't allowed to write insanely high SPF factors or lie about being water-proof or broad-spectrum. So for example if a sunscreen is SPF 60 (SPF 50+ on the tube) then PPD is 20 or higher. Lots of sunscreens outside EU have sky high SPF numbers, but almost no protection against UVA rays.
Also reapplying during day is a good idea, most chemical sunscreens work for about 2 hours, physical sunscreens can work for up to 4 hours on skin before they get inactivated by light, sweat or just fall off of skin.
Bioderma, Lierac, Uriage, Vichy, La Roche Posay, Nivea, Lancome, Garnier, Biotherm, Chanel and Avene also have great sunscreens with state of art filters.

This also great, not too much into detail, but easy to understand:
