Bitten by Sarah Jessica Parker

I saw Oprah yesterday and i really think she has some cute pieces, nothing special, but cute and affordable, that's nice

I'm impressed, too. As Softie says ... it's what the high school and college age girls wear. Fashion at this level is done by the creative mix of separates ... so each girl can be individual and creative as she wants ... or just throw on a couple easy pieces ... her choice.

I'm sure a few pieces scream "cheap" ... the houndstooth coat comes to mind ... when you see them up close. But for under $20 ...it's at least a good as what you get in the juniors stores like Forever 21 and H&M.

For young women who don't have much money ... this is really good news.

SJP was wearing what looks to be a million dollar fred leighton diamond necklace to the event AND louboutins to the event:rolleyes:.

the garments that we have seen so far look nothing like the clothes SJP's audience are used to seeing her in.
there is nothing new about the garments themselves. they are not cut differently than any items that we might see at old navy.

the propriator of the budgetfashionista.com has reported that steve and barrys employees are posting positive things about the line in the comments section of her entries about the line. i find that telling.

you know, it really isn't bad. i'm quite surprised even if she is a great dresser, herself. i thought, oh no not another celeb designer, but it's nice.

LOVE the middle look!

well- lucy-
that WAS a public appearance...
she doesn't wear that out on a regular basis to just hang out...
she's not paris hilton...

and i have seen her around ...
this is really how she looks...
pretty basic...lots of cargoes....
i've seen plenty of candid papparazzi shots of her like that too...

and that is what the clothes are about...
it would be different if it were a sex and the city collection...
but that would have to be done with patricia field...
since that was her styling...
which is now really obvious seeing what sjp comes up with on her own...

I have to agree. I was so excited about this line when i heard about the prices and saw pics of Ms. SJP herself in her designs (she looked so adorably fierce). But then, I visited the website and had a WTF moment...I'm not impressed, and I wish that I could be because I really love the concept...

...just not the clothes. :ninja:

this was posted int our starstyle SJP thread so i thought i'd also post it here where it really belongs...

Sarah Jessica talks about her line in her interview to Glamour magazine:

BM: All under $20?

SJP: That’s right. They’re not setting a trend. We’re not Balenciaga. They’re well-made clothes that feel of-the-moment.

BM: Your family was once on public assistance briefly. So you come to bargain clothes naturally.

SJP: My mother was very industrious about finding quality, affordable clothes for us. Outlets and tag sales.

BM: Eight children! Did you fight over clothes?

SJP: I was envious. I got all of my oldest sister’s hand-me-downs. And by the time I inherited them, they were really out of fashion.

BM: Kids can be very intense about trends.

SJP: I find it so ironic that all you do, for the earliest part of your life, is try to be like everybody else. And then you turn 30, and you realize all you want to do is distinguish yourself in some way.

BM: With celebrity clothing lines as common as celebrity rehab centers, how will your line distinguish itself?

SJP: Madonna’s line for H&M is extremely directional, provocative and sexy. I don’t know J.Lo’s line as well, but I know that it’s much more trendy than Bitten. L.A.M.B. by Gwen Stefani is much more avant-garde, definitely high fashion. But I don’t want to do that for women, because that’s not really their lives. Bitten is simple silhouettes that are affordable. You’re going to be able to buy $200 worth of clothes, leave that store with six bags and be able to pay your utilities and take your kids someplace special for their birthday. It’s a very different philosophy about shopping. It’s the first and only time I’ve wanted to design. When I first heard about Steve & Barry’s Starbury shoe, I burst into tears.

BM: That’s the sneaker Knicks star Stephon Marbury designed and wears when he plays.

SJP: The idea that you can give a kid a well-made basketball shoe for under $20 that a pro is actually wearing on the court is so wonderful. And I thought, my God! You know, we have an opportunity.

BM: And do you feel that growing up in modest circumstances inspired you?

SJP: It informed my decision completely. It’s a way of giving women without financial means access to good, simple, well-made clothes to feel proud of.

BM: What about the name of your line?

SJP: Well, you know when you get bitten by the theater bug?

BM: Sure. But why didn’t you just call it Sarah Jessica?

SJP: I was embarrassed to. I don’t want the line to be about me. I’m not pretending that these are clothes from my closet. Or that this is Carrie Bradshaw.

i just looked back and saw the pics from the Oprah show....
an boy- what a disaster!...
bad bad bad casting!!!...
they should NOT be pretending that someone's 60 year old grandmother could wear this stuff....
that is very bad marketing...

the website images i just posted above are much more on target...
they seem to be having some sort of identity crisis or stylist crisis or pr crisis or something...
i hope they pull that together...

oy!...

So funny that you posted that at the same time!! I was thinking the same thing, heehee!

I don't even like the website's images though...save for one funky pic up there.

i dont' know..maybe it's a new york thing...
i already dress sort of like this sometimes...

like the woven top -roll up pants - and wedge espadrilles...
that is very sjp but it's also just very nyc

I think these clothes are cute. I see a lot of potential for building a wardrobe. The pieces can be mixed to create many different looks. The real test will be in the fit. I might make the 1.5 hour drive to the nearest store to check this out when it arrives.

Aww, how cute! I was moved by the Starbury story as well. We live in a society that tells people they need $150 dollar shoes, that they need a new wardrobe every season, that they need to look like Celebrity X, Celebrity Y and Celebrity Z. It's refreshing to see a celebrity actually realize that most Americans do not dress like celebrities, and nor do they really want to.

I go to a middle to upper middle class school and I see kids wearing this same stuff everyday. Except they buy it for much, much more from stores like Hollister, American Eagle, A&F, etc. No one I know wants to wear ballgowns or avant garde shoes. Stylish to them is Urban Outfitters. So as a business plan, it makes sense. Supply and demand. People don't want to buy Gwen Stefani's clothing. Most people, especially on the west coast it seems, want shorts, capris, hoodies, cotton dresses and just simplicity overall.

This offers simplicty with a few special pieces at a price that anyone can afford. And thw whole price=quality argument seems silly to me. This winter, I bought a basic trench coat from Old Navy for $20. Not only has it held up perfectly, but people compliment me whenever I wear it. Then there's my 60 dollar jeans that got a rip in the *** after a few months. Trust me, I buy extremely cheap clothes and I know that it's how you take care of it, not necessarily how it's made.

I'm not going to pretend that I don't dress like this sometimes.

When I saw the collection on Oprah by first instinct was "Wow, I really hate all of this!" -- mostly because I was expecting something more fashion forward but now, that I'm seeing it again (and not on a grandmother) I have to say that I like a few of these pieces and if they truly are well made then I would buy them.

I do like SJP's philosophy about the whole thing.

Dododo... the line isn't actually that bad! It may just be creative styling, of course, but nothing looks really cheap in here at all.

for $20 this is a good steal, its not like the clothes arent horrendous or unwearable

Her interview seems very sincere. The clothes are priced accordingly and aren't bad at all. Kudos, SJP!

I like the philosophy behind it. Simple, good quality clothes that do not scream 'fashion celebrity victim'. I really like SPJ approach on that and hopefully Bitten will be sold here in Europe!
