I posted in this thread ages ago about some women who found their apparent bra size did not fit so well. I posted about how they tried on smaller band sizes than was recommended and found it fit better. I asked if anyone had tried this and was basically made to feel like a crazy idiot.
However, I wasn't deterred by this and came across several websites and fora, some of which I posted here before:

When I first grew boobs they weren't so noticeable and I didn't know there was anything wrong. Now that they are big enough that I can tell there is (or I should say 'was') something seriously wrong with my current bra size, I felt I was onto something and couldn't resist investigating when I got the chance! Now I feel like sharing my story of discovering the right size.
It all started when I was 11 and got my first bra. My measurements were an underbust of 27.5-28 inches, bust 30 inches (above bust was the same: 30 inches). This put me in a 32AA (maybe even an AAA), but at the time it was near impossible to find bras that size, so I would wear a 32A. It looked decent enough when standing straight, but it was obvious it was too big in the cup when I had to lean over.
I always had to fasten it on the tightest hook (should always be the loosest with a new bra). My shoulder straps would always fall off my shoulders despite having them fastened as tight as was possible and I would constantly need to pull the bra down because of the band and underwire riding up. These were classic signs that the band size was too big. Of course, I did not know that then. I thought the shoulder straps falling was normal and that the only reason my bra kept riding up was because I had no t*ts to hold it there!
By the time I had turned 18 I had become utterly fed up with constantly adjusting all my bras and quit wearing them. I didn't really need them anyway, being a boobless wonder. I didn't grow at all the entire time. Then I turned 20. In a year or so, my bust grew to 34 inches. I could fit in a 32B.
Now, when you have really small breasts you don't really see any 'definition' around the boobs. You can't tell where they begin or end on your chest. Now that I had some boobs, I could see where they began to bulge out from my ribcage. There was a clear line where they began. In trying on 32B bras, I realised that the cups fit, but the underwire wasn't even around my t*ts properly. I had double boobs, but underneath my armpits!
Okay, don't worry... I thought. Let's try a bigger cup. Nope, didn't fit. The underwire certainly wasn't digging into my boobs any more, but I definitely didn't fill the cup either! It was too big. How is this possible? I thought. How can I need the underwire of a C cup with the cup size of a B cup? Where on earth can I find that?
I think this was about the time I went looking for answers and the only possible solution I found was to try a smaller band size (which meant going up a cup size). I read on one of the sites that all the problems I had had with bras were due to having too big of a band size. They said the band should only allow two fingers underneath and you should only be able to pull the front of the bra away from your chest by an inch or so. I immediately went to put on my new 32B bras. With the lot of them I could slip both my entire hands underneath the band and pull the front away from my chest a good number of inches. I also read that, if you go down a band and up a cup the volume of the cup is the same, but the underwire is wider. This sounded like exactly the thing I needed for a bra to fit correctly.
I now knew what to do: go to England (one of the few places that have smaller band sizes than 32) and go hunt for bras that fit right! Before I got the chance to go, my boobs filled out a bit more. My bust measurement is still 34, but my boobs are fuller and I have a bit more of a cleavage.
Anyway... While I was in England I must have tried on at least 30 bras across multiple stores. It was exhausting, but exciting at the same time. I knew now that measuring was completely inaccurate, so I did not ask anyone to measure me. Though I did ask some advice and feedback from professional fitters that work out your bra size by looking at your size and shape. I tried on loads of different cup sizes in band sizes 32, 30 and 28 (one 34 as well, just because I liked the style). I knew a lot more about how a bra
should fit and signs that it did not fit and used that knowledge to find the one that fit best.
The majority of the bras I tried on were a 30 and 32 band size. I only found about 5 available in a 28 band size. Here are all the sizes I tried and what I found when I tried them on:
34B: Cup fit fine, band size far too loose and rode up after moving a little. Underwire was on the sides of my boobs.
32C: Actually fit fairly well. They were comfortable, but the band could be pulled out quite a bit.
32B: Same problems with band as 32C, underwire on boobs and poking into them.
30D: Band snug. Could fit two fingers comfortably underneath and slide all the way around. Could pull out the front one inch. Underwires fit around my boobs and the cups were filled without overflow. No digging in.
30C: Same band as above. All but one 30C bra fit me well. The one that did not fit was too tight to be comfortable. Could be due to differences between brands. All others were comfortable, but the underwires dug in a bit on the sides of my boobs.
30B: All fit bandwise, but the cup was far too small.
28DD: It fit. Could put two fingers underneath and slide around, but it got tight closer to the underwires, meaning it was a little bit too tight. I filled the cups perfectly and the underwire was neither on my boobs or too far away from them. However, I only found about 5 in this size, so I haven't had chance to experiment much with different brands.
In the end I settled for a 30D. Bra sizing tables and calculators would never tell me I am that, but they never take into consideration a woman's shape. We are all different shapes and this can affect which bra size is best for us. My breasts don't protrude a lot, but are very wide which is what gives them their volume.
I hope my story helps anyone who thinks they have the wrong bra size. Don't let people convince you that you are insane or stupid if you think the 'normal' bra sizes don't fit you right! If your bra doesn't feel right it is not dumb or crazy to be curious about finding what
does feel right for you. Go out there, do your homework and get a professional's opinion! You'll be so happy that you did once you find the right bra for you!
I recommend
Bravissimo and
Rigby and Peller fitters if you do not trust your own judgement.
