It's been awhile since I've been in here!

I have a modest goal of 12 books this year – I think I'll meet it, but I've been trying to read some of the bigger, bulkier books I've been avoiding this year.

1. Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin
2. The Dead in Their Vaulted Arches by Alan Bradley
3. And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini
4. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
5. A Storm of Swords by George R. R. Martin
6. Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter
7. Broken Harbour by Tana French - currently reading

i've always wanted to read a Danielle Steel novel. is it really trashy? with a lot of sex scenes?

i don't know if we have to post only about books published in 2014, in which case i'm out of place, but so far :

- Morrissey's Autobriography
- Elliot Allagash by Simon Rich (such a surprise!)
- Jorge Luis Borges' Selected Non-Fictions
- Baudrillard's Cool Memories IV (i've re-read that... the Cool Memories has nothing to do with his "theoretical" essays, and are, imo, the Baudrillard's books to read in priority! I love them, and had just bought this one in english at Strand 2 weeks ago - so weird, for me, to read Baudrillard in english...)
- The Elementary Particles by Houellebecq (in French)
- Un peu de soleil dans l'eau froide (EN translation: A Few Hours of Sunlight and A Little Sun in Cold Water) by Francoise Sagan
- Hiroshima, mon amour (because I found an amazing edition at Strand)/ Le ravissement de Lol V. Stein/ La maladie de la mort (The Malady of Death) by Marguerite Duras
* i really wanna know how it is translated so will probably buy Destroy, she said... soon.

i am not going to attempt the george rr martin books until he actually finishes the series (havent watched the show yet either)

i'm actually not sure if i'll like the martin books. there might be too many characters.

i'm also holding off on starting hilary mantel's series about cromwell etc. until she finishes her series.

you've got good taste (ie highbrow) taste in books. did you know that morrissey rescued a woman at the strand bookstore. i thought morrissey's book was a bit of a washout. the passages about the headmaster are the best of all. the 100 pages about the court trial should have been shortened.

the reason i've been avoiding Jorge Luis Borges is that he may be a bit too english centric. would you say so?

i tried to read Marguerite Duras's the lover, but i didnt like it. too many short sentences and fragments.

For me, it's taken a long time to really get into (and enjoy) the George R. R. Martin books for that reason – there are so many characters and they're referred to by so many different nicknames that it kind of makes your head spin.

But once you get a handle on it the books become more enjoyable. My boyfriend relies heavily on an app to remind him of who the characters are when they're brought back into the picture hundreds of pages later.

I personally found the 3rd book to be really enjoyable because I finally felt like I had wrapped my head around how everything was working.

Also, I have the first book of that Hilary Mantel series but I haven't read it yet. Might just continue to wait until the third book is out (or nearly out so I don't have to wait too long).
