Bottega Veneta F/W 2021.22 Berlin

It’s not groundbreaking but it’s decent.
It’s very Tom Ford for Gucci (FW96 And FW2001) and Prada (FW2009). As usual, the knitwear, the simpler pieces, the tailoring are great.
For the clothes, the problem is the « show pieces ». They are ridiculous and they are too much of a clash next to the very practical and desirable pieces.

This will always be funny but to me, the least desirable thing at BV is the accessories.

I think that ultimately, the problem with Daniel Lee is that he doesn’t have an idea of the type of woman/man he is designing for. I didn’t like what Tomas Maier did for the most part prior to his departure but you saw that he had a clear idea of the type of man and woman he was designing for. Yes clothes didn’t even represented 4% of the sales at that time but I guess the vision was enough for the runway.

What I think is interesting about the majority of these clothes is how they can be versatile but I would never wear them with BV shoes or bags. But I find it funny that a lot of people try the total look stuff. You looks like a fashion victim wearing the whole look…

But in the IG era, are people into personal style anymore? Because it seems like a lot of people who wore Gucci by Michele and Balenciaga when it was hot have moved on to BV.

Omg how many times are we going to sit here and say that he is copying Philo? She had a great tenure at Celine. She changed the game of fashion ok ok but time moves on. To dismiss whatever Lee does next as counterfeit Philo is so unfair and unreasonable. We all know he worked under her. Can we focus on the present for just one second? The handiwork in this collection is amazing. The glass dress and feathered embroidery are done so exquisitely I was not surprised to read it took couture level hours to finish the pieces. For me the standout moment was the red dress (look 52). So romantic but in a metropolitan way. There is a lot to work with here. I saw a little Prada early on in the beginning with the color and the military inspired looks, but as the collection went on it was entirely his own vision.

I believe Lee got lucky with that first collection. People grew bored of TM’s work after almost two-decades and decided to crown Daniel as this generations next star. His debut was good and cohesive, but it was not what it was hyped up to be. But I could be entirely wrong. Maybe this sucks, maybe this is Philo and his career will by marked by a similar likeness. If he can’t escape it fine, I am just happy to see he is selling and making the label lot’s of money. At least there is something there.

It is my birthday coming up, so I was browsing clothes and bags to treat myself this year, and while I have searched every single online shopping destination I know of, which are quite numerous, I must admit that Bottega Veneta is where it is at.

To start, in addition I have to confess that I despise wearing things that every second blogger wears (their shoes), and looking like an Insta fashion attempt. However, it is popular for a reason as the saying goes. I tried to find an interesting knit piece, and the only acceptable ones were all by Bottega. Acceptable for me meant - in zeitgeist, no logo, and actual interesting construction (no, thanks, I do not want the most plain sweater for 800 dollars, no matter how great the wool is - there should be at least some work put into creating the piece). It was those cutout twisted sweaters that a lot of brands now attempt to copy.

I could've searched for Rick Owens, Andrea Ya'aqov, Isabel Benenato and so on, but I am not a fan of this 2010-StyleZeitgeist black rags that you wrap over yourself in 200 layers.

It's okay but not his best work. His earlier collections had a stronger direction whereas this feels a bit random and all over the place. Individually, I can appreciate some of the pieces however some of the styling here is so forced it makes me roll my eyes. I for one hope that those chunky plastic looking shoes he keeps doing every season now never see the light of day again.

I also couldn't care less about the Berghain because this look book is ugly too.

I believe Lee got lucky with that first collection. People grew bored of TM’s work after almost two-decades and decided to crown Daniel as this generations next star.

I think this is exactly the point: people decided Lee was going to be the next big thing just because...independently from the actual contribution he was giving to the conversation. I find many of his ideas derivative and the overall impression of his RTW is weak, quality notwithstanding (but this is Bottega, I would not expect otherwise).
If there is any edginess in his work, it is completely marketing and production induced, but ultimately it leaves one with an impression of coldness, of wanting more.

I never got him, I don't think I've complimented one single show of his (they all blend into one anyway) and it's mainly because I'm really over the mid to late-90s fixation of so many designers in his age bracket, I've been ready for something, anything, that strays from that look for a long time...

As a final note: Any Jil Sander show pre-Prada puts his entire body of work to shame, technique and concept wise, his "vision" is so flat and there's nothing to applaud in it.

Oh yeah, he’s been consistently very timid, tepid and wimpy from the start. It’s all repurposed 90s fashion— from everyone’s diffusion lines from DKNY, Helmut Lang Jeans, CK Jeans etc etc. The silly, forced "ugly" showpieces the Muppets-caterpillar and fur-pelts things are so contrived and shoehorned in to beg for some edge to wow the easily-impressionable. I don’t even feel he warrants the hate since the designs are so basic and derivative at its core. Stripped off the marketing and styling ugliness-- and apparently ugly = edgy these bland fashion days, it’s just very high-end accessible, department-store fodder. ...Eh...

From the murky depths… so this is what it was all about? A lukewarm ambivalence washes over me. Do I hate it? No. Do I love it? No. Would I buy it? Perhaps… Not very friendly looking though.
