Buying Designer Clothing for Children / Teenagers Discussion

I don't think it's a matter of ethics so much as personal monetary choices.

The choice to spend money on designer clothes for children has no bearings on ethics whatsoever. It's all about personal choices. Some people might feel the need for their children to wear the same designers they do. Money is the only factor when considering to purchase these clothes.

You know, there were all these girls when I was in high school in Alabama who all wanted babies ONLY because they were so cute (and kind of like a pet), but they didn't take into account that they actually GROW UP and aren't babies for long!

Their was a pregnant 8th grade at my school once, what a great message to put out, "Look I'm young and I can handle school and a baby." Seriously, I wouldn't want to waste my youth with a baby everywhere, not that I wouldn't want one but I'm only 14, I'm in no rush.

mdankwah...

i hope you are only speaking for yourself...
and not attempting to say that is true of every person who ever considers designer clothing for a child...

it certainly isn't true of me...:innocent:

how is that relevant?
i buy childrenswear regularly...

i never said it was for MY child...

do you have children?...

:innocent:

Ok, how about the choice of buying your child a "Little Marc" sweater OR an equally cute H&M sweater and telling him/her the rest of the money goes to keep a child from starving in Africa? B)

I,too, believe that it is a matter of priorities, means and personal choices.

While I shall definitely make sure that any children I may have are cutely dressed,I certainly won't be spending a fortune to buy them designer clothes they'll grow out of in a couple of months.

I think that baby designer clothes are either 1) for the parents, and the little kiddie is a fashion accessory,or 2) For those to whom money really isn't an object and it is just more convenient to shop for baby at the same same store as for mom.

I don't think that the world contains all that many of the latter type of person!!

Isable Marant has brought out the very cutest line of miniature clothes.Adorable, and if I had a daughter I may be tempted to buy one piece from time to time (sigh...)...but it wouldn't matter to the kid...it would be so pleasurable for me:smile:.The kid would be equally happy with baby GAP LOL.

I would rather save money towards my kid's education/gap year travel/etc.I think.

I have nothing against people who do wish to dress their babies in mainly designer stuff though...as long as it is not to compensate for other deficiencies in the child's life and/or care.

i'm a HUGE fan of babygap...

in my world that IS 'designer' clothing for kids...
even on sale, that stuff adds up quickly...

...

I think it's a waste of money to buy expensive clothing for someone who can't appreciate it. A little kid has no concept of money and would be just as happy in a t-shirt from target as in a D&G jumper. What's the use of lavishing someone with expensive gifts if it's not in their capacity to fully enjoy it?

the REAL problem starts when you buy luxury designer goods for your pets. :P

OK, I'll put my neck on the chopping block here :P

I have Burberry leashes and bowls for my dogs. I expect both will last pretty much forever (and longer than the dogs :(). I bought a little pet dish at Target, and it promptly cracked in the dishwasher after a couple months. Which was a waste of my money?

since a number of members did not agree with the title, title got edited leaving out the 'ethics discussion' part

Excuse me, but I find that reasoning very weird. Judging stuff by how much they cost instead of how they look and feel is just wrong on so many levels for me.

Wouldn't we all buy high end clothes for our kids if we had all the money in the world? I would.

If I didn't have all the money in the world and I had a child, I might buy him/her something really nice here and there. I know that whether I have enough money or not when i'm older, i'll buy designer clothes for myself.

i know when i was small i had a dior thingy, but that was just a christening outfit, and i think if your small you can wear the big childrens clothes yourself  but ^^ i agree if i had the money i would buy it for my children but there isnt really any point buying designer clothes for children when they grow out of things so fast, rip them, muck them up, the list goes on...

I guess that if you grew up wearing designer clothes, then you'll be informed of designers, and will have gotten a feel for them, having worn them all your life. That's one advantage.

Me too:lol: .And I guess it does add up...and you could get cute stuff for a fraction...but that brings us to my quality bug...

I think baby Gap straddles the boundary^_^ .

Mrs. Faust's buys normally expensive children's brands at discount stores in New York AFTER they go on sale. This way, our daughter gets beautiful quality clothes that are much better and cheaper than Gap, etc...

excuse me moderators...
but i have an issue with renaming this thread...
it is not just generallly about designer children's clothes...
but an effort to inspire a discussion as to whether one feels it is right or wrong to do so...

**will a mod please restore the original title...
since many more members were happily having a lively discussion along these lines... :flower:

**at least include the terms ...
right or wrong...or discussion or... opinion...
i will not quibble with the semantics...
only that the title accurately reflect the topic of discussion...
so as to attract the members who are genuinely interested in such a discussion...
thanks....
