Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is 'pregnant with her second child', French newspapers claim
Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is pregnant with her second child, newspapers across France speculated today.
The baby would be the 43-year-old’s first with President Nicolas Sarkozy, 56, whom she married following a whirlwind romance in 2008.
Neither the Elysee Palace nor senior ministers have denied the claims, solely explaining that they could not say anything more because the matter was to do with the couple’s private life.
Rumours of the pregnancy first appeared in the latest edition of French Closer magazine under the headline ‘Pregnant at last’, with sources telling the weekly glossy they were ‘absolutely certain’ about the information.
Closer claims that the French first lady is in the ‘early weeks of her pregnancy’, meaning the child would be born in time for the next spring’s presidential campaign, when Mr Sarkozy hopes to be returned to the Elysee Palace for a second term.
The magazine said that ministers have been told about the pregnancy, but were told not to mention it to anyone because it is in its early stages and ‘fragile’.
Closer has printed similar stories before – all of which have proved to be false – but today papers including Le Journal du Dimanche, Le Parisien, and Le Figaro ran articles on the claims.
The right-wing Le Figaro is particularly close to Mr Sarkozy, and would be unlikely to indulge in baseless speculation for the sake of it.
The former model has often spoken of her desire to have children with Mr Sarkozy, explaining: 'I hope to, if I am young enough. It would be a dream.’
Over the Christmas period Ms Bruni-Sarkozy visited a shrine in India and told a Muslim cleric that she was praying for another son.
She had her first son Aurelien in 2001 with former lover, the Parisian philosopher Raphael Enthoven.
Ms Bruni-Sarkozy guards Aurelien’s privacy ferociously, and the nine-year-old has not been pictured with her in public since the early days of her relationship with Mr Sarkozy. She rarely speaks of him in public.
Mr Sarkozy has two sons, Pierre, 26, and Jean, 25, from his first marriage to Marie-Dominique Culioli.
He has a third son, Louis, with his second wife, Cecilia Ciganer-Albeniz. The teenager celebrated his 14th birthday on Saturday.
Mr Sarkozy also has two step-daughters from his marriage to Miss Ciganer-Albeniz.
Referring to a the alleged pregnancy, Closer journalist Laurence Pieau said: ‘We would not have revealed this information without being completely certain about it.
‘We haven’t called the Elysee palace to verify it for the simple reason they would not have answered us. This information was gathered from several sources.
‘We understand Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is in the early weeks of pregnancy. This is a risky pregnancy bearing in mind that she’s 43 years old.’
In an online report, Le Figaro, pointed to the fact that it is the third time in three years that the Press has suggested that Ms Bruni-Sarkozy might be pregnant.
It also suggested that the First Lady’s mother, Marisa, has denied the Closer ‘scoop’.
An Elysee Palace spokesman said the matter was ‘private’, while unnamed senior ministers told Le Journal du Dimanche they had ‘no comment’ to make on the subject.
