College Style

i agree with you both. however, i think i might understand user's points in saying it's disrespectful. showing up like a "slob" might represent how you feel about the class which is you don't think it's important enough to dress yourself well. not expecting a gown, but at least be presentable. prior to starting university not just for me but i feel that when i dress "presentable" i shows respect rather than a style statement, but i guess from the influence of my peers and how easy it is to just throw on clothes this has got me to dress less presentable. we all have our days (especially rainy ones) where you just wanna throw some jeans and sneakers which is ok! COMFORT IS KEY! but its important to look good i feel.

I think you said it right, turnofflights, it is important to look presentable yet comfortable as well when dressing for classes.

I go to the College of William and Mary, and it's definitely your typical college style; a dichotomy between the North Face Army and the Hipster Brigade, with a few punk rockers and hippies sprinkled in.

The North Face Army is exactly what it sounds like: winters spent in Ugg boots, North Face coats/jackets, leggings as pants, and big handbags. Summer is a little more varied, usually print sundresses or solid colored summery tops with shorts (often white). The guys are prep central; button downs under sweaters, lots of khaki and seersucker when they're dressed up. Jeans, t-shirts, and lightweight North Faces are the usual male uniform though; they definitely don't put much thought into day to day attire.

The "hipsters" encompass a pretty wide group, one that I'm sure people would lump yours truly into ;). You've got the tweed jacket/skinny corduroy/converse "ironic" hipsters, the skinny jeans/lots of scarves/lots of jewelry boho chic hipsters, your traditional Urban Outfitters-catalog-threw-up-on-me hipsters, and the hip hop fusion hipsters (skinny jeans, Nikes, hoodies). I'd say the last is one of the most popular demographics. Overall, it's pretty much anyone that obviously takes a conscious effort to dress "different".

When it comes down to it, though, the vast majority of the campus rocks a typical jeans and t-shirt combo; very low key. With the limited budget most of us college folk face, it should come as no surprise that you very seldom see the latest trends. Not to mention the school itself is almost entirely brick, so heels are super rare because of how impractical they are. Fortunately, we have cold winters and hot summers, so you get to see a little more creativity that way.

My uni is right slap bang in the middle of east end London, and the style there varies so much that it's hard to pin down at all. Yeah sure, there are definetely those people who roll out of bed in the morning and go straight to class in whatever they were wearing in bed - which is gross - but you also get those people who make an actual proper effort to dress up and look good.

I myself have no choice but to at least put some effort into what I wear at uni because I commute, and it would be really embarassing to get on the tube during rush hour wearing my pjs and ugg boots...

Does anyone here go to George Washington? I'm going to be there in the fall and I want to make sure I don't ruffle too many feathers, so to speak.

At GW there are the girls who wear sweatpants and Uggs, J.Crew styled girls, and 'trendy' girls (think vintage, Urban Outfitters, Intermix, 'hipster' styled).

As long as you feel confident in what you wear, wear it.

My campus is a mix of Late Emos, island trashiness, international geekiness, hippies, athletes in sweats, and schizophrenics who play with all the before mentioned looks.

I see no one is representing the guys here

As far as Texas go, we dress to be comfortable in the weather. And it goes across the board for girls/guys. My university consists of people mainly wearing shorts, t-shirts (school shirts), and flip flops. Especially in the summer! You really don't see individual style until the winter. (remember, Texas goes from summer to winter. There is no in between lol)

As far as the "College Style" for guys go, I've noticed a lot of guys, wearing some sort of pastel colored button down, kahki shorts, and some sort of loafer/slip on shoe. Now, this "look" could work every now and then, it's more presentable than basketball shorts and a t-shirt imho, but you go out in Austin Texas on 6th street and bam! You see every other guy wearing this. It's a very "Fratish-I come-from-money" look. Of course this look isn't what every single guy wears, but there's always someone wearing it. There's the typical cowboy boots, tight jean and t-shirt look (seriously). The A&F/Hollister/Ruehl look is still raging. Everyone has the Ed Hardy guys. And the gays look like they all raided Zara's clearance sale. It's not uncommon to see someone wearing the EXACT same thing as you are :shifty:

The one thing I cannot stand is when a sorority girl (no offense) walks around in basketball shorts, a frumpy tshirt, uggs, and a LV handbag. I can't tell if I am pissed off because the handbag is real or that she looks ridiculous. and I swear i didn't mean to offend anyone :flower:

Thanks! I've always been too worried about it being a "rich girl" school and everyone looking like net-a-porter threw up on them. I am brokebrokebroke so I'm glad I can wear my vintage finds without feeling awkward.

i really like this. i like the men with good taste in clothes:heart:

I love this look... especially the scarf/blazer combo... its so classic without trying so hard.

I go to Cornell. We have a hugeeeeee campus with so many people, there are a large variety of styles represented. Also, having to walk up and down multiple steep hills every day (it IS possible to walk uphill both ways!), with a minimum 15 minute walk to class, in gray cold weather and lots of snow/ice, makes it kind of impossible to ever wear heels. And makes it a lot more tempting to go to class in your pajamas, and some heavy duty snow boots.

I would say, probably, the majority of the student population dresses in either sweats or the typical jeans and a tee/sweatshirt college uniform. There are always the westchester japs in their Juicy/VS sweats, UGGs, and designer handbags. I would say my fellow design majors and many of the art/archies tend to dress relatively well, and on trend.

We also have our token Ivy prepsters, of course. Much more JCrew than they did in 1965, definitely not as classy, and not too many of them, though. And they tend to hang out together and join the three old money frats...Psi U, Sig Phi, Alpha Delt. Interestingly, while there are definitely many preppy guys in button downs and boat shoes, you'll be hard pressed to find a girl decked out in loafers and pearls. The girls that tend to hang out with them tend to dress like...well like normal decently dressed teenage girls, though perhaps with more expensive taste. sometimes. Typical daily wear for the guys is boat shoes, khakis, and a button up or nice sweater. I don't really have many photos but a few, from nights out:

this is one of the reason why i love going to art school in ny.
i would completely hate being the only one to dress appropriately for classes rather than putting on sweats or PJS.

CoffeeAndPearls, the guy in the third picture from the bottom looks so proud, I love it!

Campus students here really make an effort they like to dress super trendy. The freshmen are even 'trendier' they sometimes look like they just stepped out of a music video coz they have been deprived of all these things and now want to revenge..lol

CoffeeAndPearls, I hate to say it but these photographs deffently added to the illusion that is Cornell and quite frankly it doesn't surprise me. I have a friend who is starting at the Cornell soon and now I have to warn him not to get caught up in the look of Ivy Prepsters! :)
I am going to technology based school so I highly doubt that very few of the students will dress well, besides, the majority of the school is made up of guys. When I visited the campus much of what I saw is your typical college looks; Uggs, polos, weird shirt slogans (many of them referancing video games and such), sweats, ect. Oh well, its not always about what the students are wearing but more importantly it is about the education and opprotunites to grow. :)

Wow, CoffeeandPearls, I love those pics. So old school prep!

Question to the college students, especially those on a budget- what approach have you taken for school shopping? Do you buy cheaper stuff from Forever 21/H&M, etc and try to make it last the year, or do you prefer saving up for two or three "classic" but expensive pieces?

I personally try to avoid those stores. I feel like the clothes at F21 are poorly made and has recently become a little pricey for their lackluster quality. H&M is ok, but I personally prefer to go to second hand stores like Buffalo Exchange or Crossroads Trading or even thrift stores for a more unique twist that leaves your wallet feeling better. For a non second hand alternative, I save up and get something online from Modcloth or any other store that has better quality clothing.

The University of California San Diego campus is a fashion deadzone. The majority of the students are in sweats or in basic Abercrombie/American Eagle wear. It doesn't help that the majority of students are very focused on getting the grade moreso than dressing well for class. Sometimes you do get the heavy hitters in fashion, but they tend to hang around the art center of campus.

Their basics at F21 are really cheap. There are a few good basics there but others just make me think "the ones at wal mart are better." I just went there to buy 2 wife beaters for $3.50 each. I do like to go to thrift stores too. I like to browse ebay. mwahahaha.

trends in my university that i really don't like: label whoredom, juicy couture, victoria's secret pink, that color block thing (looks good on some but it's just over done, american eagle, hollister, prep, abercrombie and fitch, that "californian" style (whatever that means), cut off shorts that have longer pockets that the shorts, pants that are falling off, leopard print, zebra print etc...

oh and in class today, man i should have taken a picture but there was this guy who is "cool" that was wearing white/lightblue striped shirt with lobster prints. :ninja:
