Thank you so much for even more scans. Wow. Scvullo always said Paulina was his favorite model, and the most beautiful. Somehow she even looks vibrant wearing gray.

It's interesting to be able to compare several classic covers to a recent one that's almost a throwback to the old style. The white background is modern but I prefer the candy-hued covers. I think the differences in text also cheapen the image.

One of the great things about those Cosmo covers from 30 years ago was that the look depended much more on what the model and the photographer were able to create at the moment the photograph was shot. Today every --every-- cover on every fashion magazine is photoshopped, sometimes into unrecognizable genericness (genericity perhaps?). Why bother hiring a model or jumping through the hoops necessary to book a celeb if that is the final result?
.

exactly, that's why I hate Mert and Marcus :yuk: the masters of the fake, In the 80's there was a whole roster of magnificent photographers like Scavullo, Avedon, Newton, Bourdin, [SIZE=-1]Von Wangenheim .....[/SIZE]

Born in Dec 1977, when she did this cover ^^^ Bridget was only 16 years old - what I believe is known as JAILBAIT!

i love this thread. thanks to all for scans and links. i wandered over here via this salon article-
http://www.salon.com/books/review/2009/04/12/gurley_brown/index.html
it's an article about a new book about the cosmopolitan editor who made all this saucyness happen, Helan Gurley Brown. called "bad girls go everywhere". i forgot how i sort of loved her, and once found an ancient copy of "sex and the single girl", read it just for fun, then started using the tips in there- ie. don't buy huge value packs of items like toilet paper, keep your money for important things like a good wardrobe! something like that. i always hated on cosmopolitan a bit, though i once saw a video of a scavullo shoot and was awestruck. i still remember his leather boy motorcycle hat and a lot of hair! but now, looking at the 60s, 70s, 80s scans, i LOVE it. it's outrageous. just to watch the evolving colour schemes, the use of heightened shadows [darkened highlights?] it looks like at some points, or soft focus, the candy colours. but then the constants- hair, scanty clothing, and always that look in their eyes.

and as an aside, there was a comment [captain bob?] about it odd that a model wouldn't do lingerie. it isn't that odd, there were always choices about do you do lingerie, swimsuits, fur, be in ads for cigarettes, alcohol. they were [maybe still are] standard questions models were asked when setting up with an agency.

ciao :)

A bump for this thread with a few new vintage scans.

Cosmopolitan US October 1979 : Rachel Ward by Francesco Scavullo
Rachel Ward the 80s actress? Wow, she looks amazing there.:heart:
Btw, I love this thread. The covers are fantastic, and I have a soft spot for Frederique's 1989 cover, as I used to own that issue of Cosmo as well as every other Cosmo issue from 1989. Memories.....

I love old Cosmo covers. Although I find it hilarious that the March 1980 and April 1980 covers almost have the exact same pose but reversed.
