Oh wow Purechris, that is brilliant! Idea-wise, style-wise, skill-wise.
Don't sweaters unravel if you cut them? Was it boiled wool or such?

I also love what you did to your leather jacket; I've been needing to wash/distress mine as well. Are there any tips you recommend?

thanks soft and melisande!!!

most sweaters won't unravel if you do a top stitch near the edge....kind of like a tshirt can be left raw on the edge.

As far as washing leather goes.....my idea was not the original on here....if you go back a to the beginning of this thread madame grey did an experiment with a pair of Frye boots in the washing machine....and I beleive Helena washed a leather skirt.....the thing to be most cautious of is the lining, which will probably shrink in the wash so you may have to remove it.

I tumbled mine in the dryer for about 20 minutes and then took it out and wadded it into the smallest ball I could and tied it up and let it sit for a few days.....you may want to untie it, shake it out and wad it up and tie it again just to let it get some air.......otherwise it could get a white crust in places.

chris love the cardigan . . it's fun !

That makes two of us crazy people Curious...I simply can't fathom it.

Purechris, thank you thank you! I'm so excited to try it. Yes I was aware that Softie had pioneered this technique---hats off to her courage:flower:--- I was delighted to see that it had worked so well on your jacket!

Karma when I'm allowed.:flower:

here's a shot of the customised cardigan:

It was a cut and sew vnk sweater that was a little oversized. I cut it in half lengthwise and took 2 inches out of the back so when it wouldn't pull to the front when I overlapped it to close it. I took the ribbing off of the vnk and ran it along one side of the neckline and then used part of the strip that I took out of the back to layer the on the front for the placket. then I cut the facing out of a vintage tshirt for the other side of the sweater. When I finished and tried it on (after a few drinks and working with pins in the mirror) I realized that I put the plackets backward (right over left like a womens, not left over right like mens).....so in stead of using buttons or snaps I'm using random button/badge pins to keep it closed.

Don't drink and sew!!!

Looks great! (though I don't totally understand your process:D )
Holding needle & thread makes me sweats. Things I made so far ended up lopsided.

Question...

Well I got this plain stupid coat...and I'd like to make it look pretty original, I thought changing its buttons is a great idea...what colour shall I use?

Thanks a lot.

softer shirts

i have some polo shirts (from hollister) and one button down shirt from american eagle, and i would like them to have a softer, more dated look. especially around the collar. i kinda like my collar to lay flat rather than to stick up a little. anyone have any ideas how i can kinda destroy the shirts (without holes and bleach stains haha)

hi s9...
i've merged your question into our customisations thread...
you should get a response now...
:flower:...

i think brown tortoise buttons would look very rich and luxurious....

Thanks...any other suggestions out there?

I agree on the horn buttons....I'm having a hard time seeing what the jacket looks like on my screen....what's the fabric? Do you want it to be dressier or everyday? If the style could handle it and you're into it, I think some vintage (looking) military buttons could be quite nice....

...stay tuned I'm working on knocking this off:
