Demna Gvasalia - Designer, Creative Director of Gucci

I know the fashion industry turned into the entertainment industry but now they're literally just using the same rage bait tactics as the news... And it doesn't matter what the product is in the end, it's just collecting data and creating speculative value
Are you referring to fashion media or Kerring? You don't think they're intentionally lowering market value so they can buy back shares for cheap...? 🙃

I’m starting to think this was a desperate and last minute move and that they were in talks with Hedi or somebody else and it didn’t work out.
I wonder what, if anything, Hedi's camp had to do with the rumors. That's two or three major jobs now that he supposedly was seriously considered for and rejected or backed out. Is this some sort of scarcity strategy, demanding absurd amounts of money and control and waiting to see which brand eventually gives in? Or is he off happily photographing twinks and just letting the peanut gallery fabricate a new rumor about him every month?

To be honest, I’m starting to think this was a desperate and last minute move and that they were in talks with Hedi or somebody else and it didn’t work out.

Otherwise it makes no sense at all. They said Sabato’s direction was the one they wanted to follow. Why would you say that when you have in mind doing something completely opposite?

Cantino and Francesca must have an IQ around 50.

From Vogue Business :

"Cantino revealed that Demna was first approached several months ago. Bellettini added: “We went out for dinner. I said: ‘we would really love to talk about this opportunity’. And after a second of thinking he was very excited, and said: ‘Yes! I have it in my mind — let me put together the project for you. He worked on that, and when Stefano and I received it for the first time, we were both: ‘Let’s accelerate!.’”

Although still formally engaged by Balenciaga, Demna has already travelled with Cantino to Florence to commence his immersion within Gucci’s immaculately kept archive. During the trip, “I kept getting incredible messages from both of them,” said Bellettini. She added of Gucci: “It’s a company which, whenever you light up that spark of creativity and of artistic vision, performs.”

...

She added her belief that the announcement of Demna’s renewed contract at Balenciaga last November — which in truth was drafted to last just long enough to take him to his end-date following July’s couture show — had put even fashion’s most rabid tattlers off the scent."

I'm failing to understand how Kering thinks Demna will be able to drive growth at Gucci which is aiming for €10-15 billon in revenue. His vision is so niche, which is why Balenciaga only does €1.76 billion. After almost ten years there he has proven that the appetite for his vision is capped at that market value.

And besides all of that, his "vision" is so tired at the moment. All the tracksuits, Eastern European communist aesthetics, irony, Marigela-isms, etc etc. It's beyond boring and so predictable. His "ideas" are suitable for a small scale brand. But at Gucci? I don't think so.

Like it or not, at Gucci the clientele expects some kind of exuberance and glamour in a way. Demna cannot do that for the life of him. He has no joy or exuberance about him whatsoever. His clothes are without soul completely. Cold and vacuous.

I look forward to the train wreck first show which will probably be shown in the filthy changing rooms of San Siro stadium or in some disgusting, abandoned factory on the outskirts of Milan and will be full of Gucci tracksuits. LOL.

RIP GUCCI.

Sabato is having the last laugh.

KERING LMAO. The jokes keep writing themselves! This statement from Belletini and then this photo underneath in the Vogue Business article HAHAHAHAHA.

Bellettini said: “To your point, after 10 years, he’s ready to change and to have a new creative challenge. He’s really eclectic in his creativity.

 the shade!

I still don’t believe it. No one in his/her sane mind would think this is the right move.

so, rubbing my hands for bets on which high street brand will Gucci collaborate with in the 2nd or 3rd year of Demna's tenure.

Gosh, this first quarter of the year has been quite something. I've been quite surprised by what's been going on in the world generally... but Demna at Gucci? That was the LAST thing I'd think of. Or, I didn't actually think of it at all.
I was in a meetup when I found out and was dying to see what this forum had been buzzing about :D

In a way, I am curious what he'll do.
I foresee either the play with tailoring as the first go or playing with the "sexy" Gucci.

Red velvet pantashoes? GG made of actual pubes stuck on underwear? Some burnt velvet play and baby doll lace dresses again? I suspect some bamboo shenanigans, too...

I am concerned that it might turn out a bit like AM at Valentino. The same aesthetic - different house.

If this was so well prepared and absolutely not done in a hurry out of despair, I imagine they will announce in the coming days Demna's replacement at Balenciaga...
Right?😉

It's an interesting one. I wonder who would be able to come in to that house and create a vision that will fit those quite heavy and industrial-looking stores (I mean Balenciaga here...). It will have to be somewhat aligned to that. I just can't see Balenciaga going through an extreme shake up - they will want it surely to make some...money.

I would have loved to be THE fly on the wall when the decision was made. I guess they are grasping at straws at this point.
Same!! I wonder what his pitch was like?! Does anyone know what the process is? Would he have had to present his brand concept or a full collection to the Kering heads before getting the offer??

according to google, there's some history of Gucci tackling ugliness...AM has worked on that. So Demna will continue...

I just CANNOT BELIEVE they are entrusting Gucci to a guy whose aesthetic is basically the below ad finitum! It's actually insanity. This is not "subversive" or "post-modern" or anything of the sort. It's just an abomination and an art-school project that's been given a global stage.

Anyway, I predict the sales to continue crashing and for his stuff to do even worse than Sabato's. Jokes on Kering.

At least Ancora gave us some sense of sophistication, even if it was limited. Demna is going to give us exactly what he is doing now. I don't believe a WORD of what he or Francesca are saying about him changing. He's already said line before and then proceeded in producing the exact same stuff he was making before. This guy's word is worth less than nothing. No integrity whatsoever.

It must be interesting to be one of the potential Creative Directors who's deal fell through/rejected the offer, seeing this choice on their phone and reading Bellittini's words that they courted Demna months ago.
Considering Maria Grazia was offered the job recently and rejected it, Jonathan was offered it last summer and of course Delphine and LVMH would do a lot to keep one of their main star designers within the group.
How totally different in design, philosophy each type of CD they approached was, I wonder what their strategy was/is.
