'P. Diddy,' Herrera Win Fashion Awards

Tue Jun 8, 8:03 AM ET
By SAMANTHA CRITCHELL, Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK - Sean "P. Diddy" Combs finally got what he's craved from the fashion industry: respect — and a little thing called a CFDA award.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America named Combs the  top menswear designer of the year for his Sean John collection at its annual awards show Monday night; he beat veterans and previous winners Ralph Lauren and Michael Kors.
This was Combs' first win despite four previous nominations.
I'm very happy as you can see," said Combs, who danced his way up to the podium at the New York Public Library. "I've had some things I've had on my mind for a few years."
He didn't hold a grudge, though.
First, Combs, wearing a white tuxedo jacket, told the audience of fellow designers, models, fashion editors, stylists and retailers that years ago he stood in the Ralph Lauren store "saving my pennies" for a new Polo shirt. "I am living the American dream." Then, he shouted, "Ralph, you're still the sexiest man on the planet!"

Carolina Herrera was honored as the best womenswear designer of the year, and Reed Krakoff, Coach's president and executive creative director, was picked as the top accessories designer.

Sarah Jessica Parker was toasted as this year's  "fashion icon," following in the Manolo Blahnik footsteps of Nicole Kidman (news) and C.Z. Guest.
"I think they made up this award just in case she (Parker) came along," gushed Isaac Mizrahi as he presented the former "Sex and the City" star with her award.
Parker, wearing a hot pink and black lace vintage halter dress by the late Hollywood costumer Howard Greer, said she was "thrilled."
"Fashion is my fatal flaw. It's my weakness. Sometimes you see something you want and you can't have it, but in my case ... " she trailed off to laughter from the crowd.
"Sarah Jessica Parker represents the fact that high fashion — which had been divorced from reality for a while — is now a little more entwined with what people are wearing," said Glamour editor in chief Cindi Leive.

The CFDA awards, now in their 23rd year, has increasingly put an emphasis on the close relationship between fashion stars and celebrities. Natalie Portman showed up on the arm of Zac Posen, the winner of a Swarovski-Perry Ellis award for emerging talent, and Martha  Stewart accompanied womenswear nominee Ralph Rucci.

"I've admired his clothes for so long, and I started to buy some. Then he asked me to be his date. I'm honored to be his date," said Stewart, wearing a white satin jacket and black cigarette pants.

Susan Sarandon wore a full-length magenta gown with a lace overlay to present Donna Karan with her lifetime achievement award. "Donna's clothes don't wear you, they embrace you," Sarandon said.

Actress Bernadette Peters also wore one of Karan's designs, a black off-the-shoulder cocktail dress. "After 19 years, I knew this was a good dress," she said.

Other winners included hat designer Eugenia Kim, Wall Street Journal fashion reporter Teri Agins, Miuccia Prada and photographer Irving Penn.

Tom Ford, the former Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent designer, received a special tribute from the CFDA board of directors for the sizzle, sex appeal, hard work, business sense and imagination he brought to the runway.

Ford said he'd been lucky enough in his 20-year career to receive a few awards but this was the first time he'd taken the time to savor one.

However, he did use the word "temporary" at least once when referring to his retirement

Lena,

How wa the Ferry concert? Ok, back to business. I just heard the P.Diddy award a few hors ago over drinks.
I thought they were kidding. Even though I bellieve Sean John's line is looking impressive ( 90% of which never hits stores), I do not think he deserves an award.

I must believe in American as it is waht drives me, but come on......

Whats next I do not know, but P Diddy!!!!!!!!!!

The CFDA makes American fashion look a right joke! Who judges these things?! And Sarah Jessica...give me a break! Just another frivolous display of status and no talent, imo.

I agree with you guys.

SJP is just lucky she was cast as Carrie. I hope she thanked Patricia Field.

And P.Diddy menswear?    He DOES NOT even design this. Not even fellow nominees like Kors deserved it.

Also for womenswer Ralph Rucci absoluetly deserved this. The fact the HE IS THE ONLY AMERICAN DESIGNER SINCE MAINBOCHER TO DO HAUTE COUTURE should made him win this.

And for RTW, Zac so did not deserve it. Someone like Tess Giberson does.

I know, Ralph is the only one bringing American fashion to a whole new level.

Also, Lena I agree with that is was ZZZzzz. Everyone looked so safe, boring.

You know,I was in shock the year they awarded Daphne and Nicole of Bruce. I couldn't believe they went around their celebrity designer frenzy ways and actually awarded two people who actually deserved it. Too bad that pattern didn't continue and they didn't award someone like Giberson.

Did Miuccia get the international award? See,there again,of all the aceolades she's been given, just seems repetitive and predictable. I would have given that to Dries Van Noten.

And I agree with you both on Rucci. Sad isn't it? To be shafted like that by people who are supposed to know a thing or two about design. They base everything around hype.

ive never bought into the SJP hype- ever. i dont think she is attractive either.

someone told me P diddy bought zac posen  zac still has creative control, but i guess money problems are common

totally boring, i agree.

It's pretty sad when celebrity names are chosen for fashion awards over trained designers or when popularity wins over talent. IMHO, these awards are becoming less prestigious and are only an excuse for people to dress up and be photographed. :(

as much as i am disappointed...i am not surprised by any of the picks except maybe carolina herrera. i mean p. diddy can throw a lot of money toward whoever influences these decisions and he's in cohoots with zac posen so it follows (and sjp with hbo just released season six of satc and prada is well prada); but if it was strictly a who's-willing-to-spend-the-most contest, i thought that michael kors and his new corporate partners (or marc jacobs and lvmh) would have insured a win for their womenswear.

sean p diddy, please.... that is revolting! and embarrassing!

He goes through more men than J.Lo.
:dizzy: i was thinking that myself.......he tries to associate himself with whatever is 'in' at the time

he should marry zac (queen of tack)

that is too funny!!!! he must be that needy type that finds a new best friend every month! you never see him and ashton together anymore... thanks for the laugh!

zac is ANNOYING!

Zac Poser's jacket it is quite nice in a camp-kind-of-way...

I don't think much needs be said about the rest :ninja:

OMG I was just going to say something about that jacket... I love it

Haha! Ale, beat up Zac and steal his jacket...you'd look so much hotter in it...

I can cut the crap and do my own in two days :innocent:

I love his jacket anyway

Love his jacket??? It's looks greasy and what's with the undershirt thing? I guess that's his version of ghetto fabulous or something...but that's okay, at least he's a real designer, though how real I'm not sure. Ralph Rucci, like every other decent designer, will get his nod from his peers when they're tired of being jealous of his success and respect from people internationally, though I must say, losing to CH is not all that bad, she's doing some wonderful things as well.

Was anyone else surprised to hear that Zac did not officially graduate from CSM's??? I didn't know this...
