Fashionken, I think you need to read what you wrote again because your obviously not seeing something. Just because you follow up your statement of, and I QUOTE "I don't think Slimane should have casted a black model simply because I don't think it suits Dior's aesthetics.'' and stating that you think the dior homme aesthetic suits "skinny white boys" with "'Of course, this doesn't mean that a non-skinny boy, a black boy or even a manly man can't wear it, which is proven by Dior's costumers and celebrities.', doesnt mean anything. The problem I had and OTHER MEMBERS of this forum is that by saying black models dont suit the aesthetic, you have grouped them as one instead of as individuals. Not every black person looks the same and unless you have seen every black person on this earth and to be born, who are you to say they dont have the look or fit in with dior homme's aesthetic. To just make things simple for you...your not hedi(im sure he knows what he wants and who has the vibe, look or whatever he wants in a dior hommer considering HE CREATED/DECIDED WHAT THE DIOR HOMME AESTHETIC IS! oh and once again THANK GOD your not a designer(hopefully)

Firstly, please don't take that tone with me. This is a civilized discussion.

Secondly, imagine if Slimane had put a fat man in his fifties on the runway. I'm sure you'd have a thing or two to say about Dior's aesthetics then. The only reason everybody's getting so worked up about Karl, Belletrist's and my comments is because it's race-related. Somehow it's alright to talk about 'types' in fashion when it comes to weight, age and bone structure but as soon as you dare to say anything about types related to skin colour, you're told off.

I completely understand Belletrist's comments about putting 'model types' into the perspective of 'sexual types'. I, too, tend to prefer, well, partners of a certain look - which happens to be the classic Slimane look - but that doesn't mean that I don't find black people beautiful.

Thirdly, I am fully aware that you can't group black models. You can't group 55-year-old models either but in my opinion, a man of that age still wouldn't suit Dior's aesthetics.

Finally black models!.....( not sure if he was the best out there)...I like the new collection but its too early for me to say i like it better than s/s 07

:woot:

This will sound weird, but sometimes I wish I were a tall skinny man so I could wear Dior Homme and not look like a total as*

That's my strange comment of the day. :p

But seriously, I especially love the details on the jackets/blazers. I can't decide if the second jacket looks like spiderwebs or the chalk lines on a mock-up blazer. Either way, I love it!

And, I'm glad to see Heidi put in some cultural diversity. although it's too limited. Come on Heidi, let's get some more cultures in here...

race does not exist until you let it define your views, obviously fashion ken needs to do some soul searching because interests, style and interaction are not defined by the color of your skin, but obviously fashionken lets race determine his views so that makes him a racist...i have been studying race and racism in one of my anthropology classes this term and fashionkens statement is the definitive racist ideology manifested.

To say that race doesn't exist is very ignorant. Race, culture and beliefs are what define the world and what always have defined the world. You are taking the word 'race' and putting it into a negative context. To me, 'race' is not a negative word. It's a definition of one's genetic heritage. Race is closely related to culture, which creates the colours of the world. From colours we take inspiration, we mix and create new things.

This does, however, not mean certain aesthetics don't apply to certain races. Take Basso&Brooke's ss07 collection: It was heavily inspired by African patterns and colours so naturally, they used several black models because these pattern and colours are related to black Africans, and, as Karl tried to point out, because certain colours go well with certain skin tones.

Slimane's work has been known to be inspired by 1960s' mods, 1990s' goths and this decade's indie movement; subcultures which are all historically related to white people.

Human equality is not arguable. We are all the same species.
Do not call me a racist.

I think he's doing what he can to push forward DH a little more and also reflect his current feelings at the house, from the television snow screens to the general confusion people seem to be feeling overall about aesthetic choices he's made. I'm still in that very small and not so vocal camp that feels none of this stuff touches what he did for YSL, where his choices all the way around were open, diverse, romantic. There's really good things happening in menswear now and this doesn't cut the mustard, black models or not.

the bigger picture is that african american models are under-represented and often times invisible on american runways. just because the ignorance of one person allows them the ability to deny that there is beauty in the various kinds of people in this world, does not mean that we (black, asian, hispanic peoples) do not exist. we do not all dress alike, we do not all look alike, we do not all have the same skin color. to argue that someone who you have never seen wont look good in a particular garment is laughable.

and for the record; racism isnt always a concious thing....it is possible to harbour racist sentiments whilest not knowing the extent of your ignorance.

the solution: if you prefer only to see white skin on a runway then click to the next picture whenever you see a beautiful brown face in the show.
