Dior S/S 2010 : Karlie Kloss by Steven Meisel

Meh. The shot is slightly better, but it doesn't change the fact it's totally boring and uninteresting.

The new shot isn't as good as the first, but I like it. I am enjoying the mystery and depth that consists in each shot.
Meisel is an unexpected choice for Dior. But with Karlie, it works.

^ I actually prefer this new shot to the last one. For me the lighting is much more effective in this, and it's a little less boring. My one complaint would be that Karlie is overdoing the glare thing just a little - if her head was tilted a tiny bit less it would be worlds better.

second is miles better i loved that look in the collection!

I prefer the second shot, it's classier and less scary... Even if I don't get Karlie's expression >.< this weird stare works on the runway, but in a campaign it ruins everything imo

What a great campaign! both shots look stunning so far, I knew Karlie would do wonders for the brand!

I don't find the whole film noir thing to be very effective. It looks very kitsch and in the second shot, the lighting is very photoshopped. If the light is coming through the blinds, why is there such a strong light above her head?

I don't mind the illogical manipulated lighting in terms of the film noir influence; those films weren't naturalistic, they were fairly stylised.

It seems to me that the lighting in film noir is purposely artificial as an important part of how that whole genre tells its stories. Those movies use a mix of lighting effects which deliberately draw your attention to some part of the storyline - to convey a shadowy world where occasionally a dame will come in and light up the room. Or sometimes a sense of contrast is pushed to some extreme in order to convey a sense of violence from light alone, before a character even speaks or moves in a scene.

So it doesn't really matter if there's an artificial mix of light sources, because the light isn't a background, it's almost a form of commentary. A good film noir will be able to create a whole world where morality can be reflected in the lighting scheme, good guys, bad girls and a whole lotta grey.

That said, it can look kitsch when all you're trying to do is sell a handbag.

The campaign isn't doing anything for me. I like Karlie but she doesn't really fit Dior's image to me. Huh, funny that Meisel shot this because he apparently rejected to shoot for them last season.

now that i see her face so close... i can only say eeeeewww

seeing the scan makes me like it even more. I like how the image almost looks misfocused; it accentuates the lushness of what she's wearing. thank you GH.

Karlie looks a little too 'come hither' in the picture for me, but I think The “shadowy film noir cinema” and updated by Meisel to create a “modern-day billboard siren.” did come through. I like the concept- I especially love her hair and her makeup. ^_^
