Discussion: Who Should Be The Creative Director of Chanel?

I think they'll announce the new CD after the MdA show. Not immediately after, but before the winter break.

cant believe all this excitement ended up with blazy. i dont think its a long term plan though, he does not have what it takes to have a long career in one house i feel.

It's basically official, everyone knows at CHANEL and the news gonna spread in no time among all the Metiers d'art show attendees in 1 day.
I'm sad they Did Not go for a show man designer, Blazy is Just another Raf's doppelganger with terrible sense of humor and super pretentious...so forget the big drama couture show venues and the fun interviews from Karl.

This is partially the fault of the people who sh*t on Virginie Viard season after season, she's not great but she's not awfully bad either. The worst is yet to come. Moreover, if JW goes to Dior, the industry will lose two strong female voices (a rock chick POV and a demure conservative one). I dislike DEI as a concept, but who else is left? Sarah at Givenchy?

i think that blazy is unexpected because.. he just exists. He hasnt done anything life changing. A good, unexpected pick would have been someone that everyone can unanimously accept to be talented but had a totally different style than whats expected of chanel.

The fact that he has never done « Chanel » is a plus to me. It means that he will be an exercise. I want to be surprised and sometimes, the unexpected is the best way to get to the desire.
I like that element of surprise too even if it may not be what one one expects from KL`s Chanel.

I also like the fact that Chanel is taking so long to consider who to place there. Perhaps it shows that they are serious and trying to avoid having too many changes. I wonder if VV was seen as a seat warmer in the first place, or the same selection process was done but the outcome did not turn out as expected?
But then again, I read here that Chanel under VV was selling well? But yet she was replaced ( unlike say, MGC at Dior?)

I like Blazy and I hope that if ever he gets to go there, it will be a place for him to stay, but given his age, it is also not likely he will stay til he retires at 60ish? Oh well...

VV RTW/fashion sold more than KL facts.
she left after not agreeing with management's facts.

no amount of online bully could made Chanel get rid of her because she was making the house gain few billions more growth every year :-)

but i understand what your trying to say

i do agree women cd´s if they don't fit the gay male ideal extravaganza idea of fashion they get shi..ted on to harshly when fashion cant be consumed visually online or in magazines as a sport.

i personally feel even my favorite CD´s make verry trash/boring/stupidly commercial etc fashion as well at times KL VV Hedi Miuccia Phoebe , Rei, HL Jil. NG The Row Donnatella TF gucci years .....

It's a very unexpected choice, since Chanel, with Vuitton, is probably the biggest job as CD you can get. Now look at NGs resumee vs Blazys. I guess times have changed and they are happy with somebody who will just deliver what they order, in a very non-offensive way, but still... a little bit confusing. But after all, Chanels biggest clientel is hardly a fashion crowd - They want merchandise and collectibles. I'm sure he'll be able to deliver.

I am not happy at all with Blazy at the helm of Chanel. But I will give him a shot. I don’t expect anything tho

Karl wasn’t the obvious choice for Chanel but he was chosen because of that.

Yes Virginie sold more. I wasn’t necessarily a fan of her work but at the same time, I’m not the type of customer who goes to Chanel for jeans, tshirts or sweatshirts. That’s a level of wealth that is at another sphere for me lol.

I think we should not confuse sometimes the show, the clothes and the vision with the experience in stores, even more with brands that « sells themselves ». In reality, from a pure retail experience, I prefer Dior to Chanel. MGC’s prints are always good, the silhouette is always the same and the clothes are well made and aren’t tacky (when they don’t have a huge MISS DIOR on them).

I don’t think MGC is doing « Dior » because I do not think she is comfortable with the idea of feminity attached to Dior but her clothes are good.

I didn’t liked Virginie’s clothes or accessories. There were some cute pieces on the precollections though.

My issue will Blazy will be to see how he explore Couture because he has done Couture at Margiela and his idea of experimentation at BV is Couture-like but Chanel HC is a different exercise, it’s a different game. It’s also about the idea of clothes that will be worn by clients, clothes that fits a lifestyle so the idea of a woman wearing those clothes is always essential.

He can be playful in his clothes but I hope he will let loose in his approach to Chanel.

And tbh, I think it’s time to restore some kind of class at Le Grand Palais. Some clients looks ridiculous with the pile of CC.

Its December today  So I guess its soon.

- Virginie was the CD for the Fashion entity, now it’s the studio.
- Patrice Laguereau (who died last week or the week before) was the CD for Joaillerie and Haute Joaillerie (costume Jewelry is in the fashion entity).
- Arnaud Chastaignt is the CD for the watches
- Ammy Drammeh, Cecile Paravina and Valentina Li are the CD for make-up
- Olivier Polge is the perfumer.

So on top of that, they have presidents for:
- Fashion ( Bruno Pavlovsky)
- Beauty ( Simona Cattaneo )
- Watches and Jewelry ( Frederic Grangié )

And on top of that, you have that « weird position » that is the one of Thomas du Pre de Saint Maur, who is the head of creative ressources for all the entities except fashion. He is the one responsible for the fragrances, beauty, watches campaigns and communication, the choice of the spokesperson with the CD of those said categories.

And a lot of those positions were created after the death of Jacques Helleu. Until 2007, Chanel was basically Karl (Fashion), Jacques Helleu (watches and fragrances), Jacques Polge (Perfumer), Dominique Moncourtois et Heidi Morawetz (Beauty).

The death of Jacques Helleu made them change the structure of the house.

Reading all these names already in place I don't think Chanel would take someone young and fresh as their DA. Imagine Blazy against all these roles in the house and this we still didn't mention other creative departments. VM, Press and architecture.

My guess is still someone old school and French.

Chanel is going through a generational and transitional phase.
I mean, it’s not a matter of age when you have such an experience. He is 40 years old. Karl took over Chanel at 50.
If it’s him, he is indeed perfect. He is French and will probably fit well in that environment.

Blazy may be seen as young and fresh because this is his first gig in the limelight but he has years of experience, an experience running a Couture Atelier (even though there’s no atelier like Chanel’s), the CD of a fashion house and many roles in the creative structure of a house + business.
