Dita Interview!
INTERVIEW with Dita about her Crazy Horse costumes:
After a sold-out two week run in February,
Dita Von Teese returns to the stage of the
Crazy Horse for another two week stint between March 16th to 27th. She’s the first guest star in the history of the famed Parisian nightclub. Dita has brought the sensuality of burlesque back into mainstream, but she also happens to look spectacular fully-clothed! I’ve seen her at the Haute Couture shows in the past, and she is always dressed to the nines.
Her show
“Le Bain Noir” features a new costume by
Elie Saab, corset by
Mr Pearl, hat by
Stephen Jones and shoes by
Christian Louboutin - an all-star wardrobe team if there ever was one. Between her busy rehearsal and performance schedule, Dita was kind enough to answer a few of my fashion and costume questions. Please read below:
Susan Tabak: Please tell us a little bit about the costumes you’re wearing during your run at The Crazy Horse and who designed them.
Dita Von Teese: Two of them are by Elie Saab, and one is comprised of many pieces including a suit from Christian Dior, hats by Stephen Jones and corsets by Mr Pearl.
Susan: How do you create your costumes so that they both tie in to the performance and are easy to remove?
Dita: I have very specific instructions on what kind of hooks are used. With each item that comes off, it must [reveal] another beautiful outfit in itself. It’s all carefully calculated in every way. Sometimes it takes time — trying different things to get it all just right so that I can make it look easy to take off.
Susan: How have your looks varied over the years?
Dita: The costumes have become more extravagant, for certain. As I was able to invest more in each show, the costumes became more extreme. As far as my actual look—well, it hasn’t changed much, I have been wearing my hair and makeup the same way since about 1992! The length of my hair changes from time to time, but that’s about it. The last time my hair was dyed anything other than blue-black was in 1990. I found a look I like a long time ago, and I have no desire for change!
Susan: Some of these outfits you’re wearing at the Crazy Horse are utterly dazzling, like the Elie Saab Haute Couture piece. They are obviously one-of-a-kind. Do you have back up or duplicates of these costumes?
Dita: I wish that was possible! I am sure Elie Saab would kill me if I asked for two of everything!! These things are SO expensive — with all the embroidery and Swarovski crystals and so on – that it would be impossible! We just guard them with everything we can, and there is always security solely for my costumes. They are kept in a room while I’m onstage.
Susan: What do you do with all of your old costumes?
Dita: I save them and keep them stored and protected.
Susan: Do you have an all-time favorite costume or dress you’ve worn in the past?
Dita: It would be impossible to choose just one!!
Susan: How does a Parisian audience differ from an American one? Why is performing in Paris special?
Dita: Performing in Paris is the most exciting, because the Crazy Horse has such an amazing history. It is really an institution in France, and no other country has a place like this — a risqué cabaret that has been respected and referenced time and time again by fashion designers and artists. So it means a lot to me to be a part of this special place and to work along side these amazing dancers. And as much as it saddens me to admit it and to betray my fellow Americans— the Parisian audiences are really the height of sophistication! It’s a shame that more Americans don’t know the history of burlesque (in America) and they don’t have as much respect for their showgirls, like France does.
Susan: I just returned from the Pret-a-Porter Fall 2009 shows. I’ve seen you here and at the Haute Couture. Do you have any particular favorite shows?
Dita: I didn’t really get to see all the shows this time because I was rehearsing for the Crazy Horse, but usually I love to see Dior, Elie Saab, Lacroix and Jean Paul Gaultier.
Susan: Your skin is incredible. Care to share any beauty secrets?
Dita: No sun, no cigarette smoking, and beauty sleep!
