The West Australian: Greensmith has wheel appeal for Von Teese
ROSS McRAE, The West Australian

Perth’s Melanie Greensmith isn’t called a designer to the stars without good reason.

Over the years, celebrities such as Katy Perry, Lily Rose Cooper (nee Allen), Kate Moss, Miley Cyrus, Debbie Harry, Britney Spears, Jerry Hall and even the late Amy Winehouse have all bought a slice of Greensmith’s famed Wheels & Dollbaby fashion label.

And this week in Sydney, Greensmith caught up with one of her most loyal celebrity clients, glamorous burlesque star Dita Von Teese.

The pair met about seven years ago in London when Greensmith spotted Von Teese with her then husband, Marilyn Manson, at the Mandarin Oriental hotel.

Within six months Von Teese appeared in her first Wheels campaign and in 2011 they collaborated on a limited-edition range of vintage-inspired cardigans.

During her visit to Greensmith’s Surry Hills boutique this week, Von Teese selected several items from the upcoming autumn-winter 2013 collection – the Formidable La Femme range – including the Pussycat Knit Sweater and Oh La La Fringed Knickers.

“Catching up with Dita, whether it be in Australia or anywhere else in the world, is always a pleasure. We try to catch up as much as possible,” Greensmith told AAA.

“She’s such a warm, friendly woman and we’ve known each other a really long time. Dita loved the brand new AW13 collection and now owns five new pieces and the collection hasn’t even launched.”

Greensmith and her rocker partner Mark McEntee had lunch with Von Teese and her boyfriend, rumoured to be musician Miles Kane, at Catalina restaurant, where they discussed ideas for the next Dita Von Teese for Wheels & Dollbaby signature cardigan collection.

“Dita and I are in the early stages of collaborating about where we are going to take the next collection of cardigans,” Greensmith said.

“She even tweeted to her fans for their colour suggestions today over lunch with Mark and I and her new beau.

“We can’t reveal too much about the cardigans yet but it’s exciting. All the Dita cardigans are sold out.”

Ask Dita Von Teese: How Can I Take Care Of My Skin So It Looks Like Yours When I’m 40?
Allow me to commend you on having the good sense to care about the future of your skin!
by Dita Von Teese

Hi! I have a VERY important Q for Dita:

Dita you are so beautiful and glowing and radiant‹and you are 40! I’m 24 now, and am TOTALLY stoked to get older. But duh, I still want to have great skin and age as elegantly as humanly possible, like you. What can I do now, and in the future, to ensure I won’t be kicking myself for jacking up my skin in 20 years?

xxxCaitlin

Dear Caitlin,

Let me say thank you for the compliment, and allow me to commend you on having the good sense to care about the future of your skin. Let me start with the basics. The most important things you can do to care for your skin in the long term are these three things:

1. Don’t smoke.

We already know it’s unhealthy, but smoking cigarettes is also the fast track to aging and wrinkles. I know several young women that are already really regretting those lines they have around their mouths. Don’t smoke.

2. Use sunscreen.

This is probably the best advice I have, and every dermatologist will likely agree that sun damage is the worst thing for beauty. I use a light sunscreen on any normal day, and a heavier one on days that I know I will be outside for extended periods of time.

On tropical holidays, I also wear a hat or carry a parasol. I’m actually quite good at swimming with one hand holding parasol! Don’t forget to apply your skincare and your sunscreen to your neck and décolletage.

All the incentive you need is there on the beach in St. Tropez…overly-tanned, leathery European women with wrinkled brown cleavage are everywhere, and if you ask me, the sight should be enough to scare anyone into using sunscreen. If you want to tan, do it safely with self-tanners and bronzers, spray tan or whatever it is the skin-responsible bikini-babes are doing these days. It also helps to wear UV-protective sunglasses to keep you from squinting your eyes, causing fine lines to develop.

You might want to try one of the new SPF base “BB creams,” which are all the rage. I’ve been using an SPF beauty base like this for years. (I like the silky textured DiorSnow UV Base SPF 35 in Beige) But now I’m now seeing lots of new inexpensive UV beauty bases on the market, which is great news for anyone that wants to try one.

BB cream is promoted as an all-in-one facial cosmetic product to replace serum, moisturizer, primer, foundation, and sunblock. It can be worn alone as a tinted moisturizer, over serum and moisturizer as a regular foundation, and under powder, depending on the desired amount of coverage.

3. Moisturize like a maniac.

While researching my upcoming beauty book, I interviewed a very prominent professor of dermatology and several cosmetic surgeons. They all agree that keeping the skin well-hydrated is a very important factor in keeping skin youthful and healthy. There are lots of inexpensive, effective moisturizers on the market.

My dermatologist, the professor of dermatology I mentioned above, doesn’t have his own line of skincare or lasers to sell me on, which is one thing to look out for when seeking skincare guidance. He tells me never to expect miracles from beauty creams and just to use the products I like the texture and scent of, because none of them are going to change your life. I’ve tried nearly every fancy cream on the market, and I can tell you that although I might luxuriate in some of them, the results I’ve had from some of the Neutrogena and Cetaphil products are exactly the same.

If you want to address specific problems, I would suggest seeing a dermatologist, because the pretty jars at the cosmetics counter don’t contain miracles. I’ve seen a dermatologist on and off for years, because I’m quite sensitive and have bouts of redness and rashes and things brought on by allergies and stress, so I’ve always needed professional help.

In my 30s, I also started using a light retinol cream at night, and you can get some great over-the-counter ones now.

I’m revealing much more detailed information in my upcoming beauty book next year, with all of my beauty secrets, along with information from lots of experts and other women I know who have aged gracefully and gorgeously, so stay tuned! And remember, it’s easy to look good in your 20s, so take care of your skin now and it will make things a lot easier down the line.

xx

^ Great beauty advice :).

Nice to read her bit on high-end moisturizers effectively doing the same thing as drugstore brands.

Gourmantic: Intimate Soirée with Dita Von Teese and Cointreau

It’s not everyday you find yourself face to face with the legendary Dita Von Teese. Petite, curvaceous, sensual, and not much taller than I am. Quietly, she slips behind the bar at Sydney’s Victoria Room, and time stops – a surreal moment to commit to memory.

At the intimate soirée, Dita Von Teese, Global Ambassador for Cointreau, prepares the Dita Fizz, a cocktail created by The Victoria Room‘s Bar Manager, Luke Hanzlicek. The drink celebrates her glamorous lifestyle with a mix of Cointreau, ruby red grapefruit, rose water, mint and topped with soda water.

Taking instructions from the expert, she steals the moment by slapping the mint and giving it a “little spanky” and guests erupt into laughter. The duo then proceed to make a stylish and sophisticated Cosmopolitan with Cointreau, vodka, and a fruity-dry cranberry juice with an orange twist.

After a brief photo opportunity, Dita Von Teese relaxes with guests, looking very much at home in the glamorous surrounds of the Victoria room.

The New Potato Talks to Dita Von Teese

When it comes to burlesque, Dita Von Teese is the Meryl Streep of the industry. Taking a cue from the golden age of cinema and classic pin-up imagery, Teese has become the ultimate glamour girl of our time. Named the “Burlesque Superheroine” by Vanity Fair, this performer thinks only outside the box. Perhaps that’s why designers like Christian Louboutin, Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, Chopard and Cartier have all called on her to perform at their events. Teese and her burlesque shows are the living, breathing, dancing equivalents of eye candy.

And speaking of eye candy, it didn’t take long for Teese to become a world-renowned fashion icon, topping more best-dressed lists than some of our favorite actresses. The real question is, is anyone really keeping tabs on what this star is eating? Not enough, which is why we chatted with Teese about everything food, still leaving time for a bit about burlesque, closet-switching and stripteases…

If you want great burlesque, what are your personal favorite places around the world to go for it?

I don’t really go to many burlesque shows, but I obviously have to mention my own full length revue which is called Strip Strip Hooray! and stars the creme de lá creme of the very best burlesque acts from all over the world. Each performer in the show has been chosen by me because they represent the most unique, show-stopping numbers that keep the hour and a half long revue at a wildly raucous pace. I would also recommend The Crazy Horse Paris, which isn’t exactly authentic burlesque-style striptease, but it is historic, and the most elegant erotic cabaret of all time. It never disappoints.

Current LA spots we’d be sure to find old Hollywood film stars…

Musso and Frank Grill in Hollywood, The Beverly Hills Hotel Polo Lounge, and I’m sure The Oviatt Penthouse would be the perfect place for an illicit old Hollywood tryst.

You never liked X till you tried it at X…

You probably never loved healthy green smoothies and juices until you’ve tried Kimberly Snyder’s elixirs at Glow on Melrose.

What’s the drink you just discovered?

Steaming hot peppermint tea with a shot of Cointreau in it.

What’s the drink that takes you back in time?

A Cointreau Sidecar or a White Lady.

What’s your new favorite place to travel to?

For New Year’s, I went on a romantic trip to an antique storybook-style log cabin in a snowy forest near Lake Tahoe. We spent the days sledding and snowshoeing, and the night mulling wine and making comfort food. After spending the past few years indulging in exotic and fancy European travels, my favorite new thing is to visit obscure, unique place in the United States – and taking road trips. I really want to go glamping in a vintage airstream trailer!

What won’t you travel without?

Glamorous clothes! For me, dressing up in kitsch and over-the-top outfits for my trips is half the fun.

LA restaurants that are time capsules…

Musso and Frank Grill, Canters, Chez Jay in Santa Monica, Formosa Cafe and The Apple Pan

Your go-to recipe for eating in…

If I’m just cooking for myself, I roast slices of japanese kobucha squash with coconut oil and sea salt, and I use the leftovers to make a velvety pureéd soup. If I’m entertaining, I make my famous chicken pot pie.

A trend that’s starting to grow on you…

Instagram, but mostly I just like to view other people’s pictures, since I personally use a protected photo service.

A trend you simply don’t get…

Jeans. Not comfortable!

The places you go for the atmosphere…

The Good Luck Bar and The Madonna Inn

The new thing you like to bring to a dinner party…

My Cointreau travel bar

The new thing you like to have out when hosting one…

My antique typewriter for guests to write notes on.

Where do you go for inspiration?

My library of vintage books and magazines in my house.

The one person you’ve always wanted to switch closets with…

I would trade for the entire Christian Dior haute couture archives from the 1950s through the John Galliano years! But I don’t covet any one person’s closet, because I can’t think of anyone who has my exact style, and I don’t want to get stuck with someone’s jeans and strappy sandals along with the good stuff.

What are some restaurants that never go out of style?

The Beverly Hills Polo Lounge, Musso and Frank Grill

What’s not present on the LA scene yet, that should be?

A carefully-curated burlesque club with authentic, beautiful and risqué striptease acts rather than the same old “faux-lesque” shows with hip-hop dancers singing “Fever” with feather boas. If I never had to see another hot babe in fishnets singing “Big Spender” or “Fever” it will be too soon.

If you could have a dinner party with any five people, living or dead, who would be there? What would you perform?

I have to perform at my own dinner party?? That’s not very fun!

Salvador Dali, Mae West, Marchesa Casati, Betty Grable, Henry Miller

THE BUZZ, Such a Teese
by Damien Woolnough for The Australian

With her latest collection of lingerie now on the racks in Target and a fleeting visit to our shores last week to spruik Cointreau, Dita Von Teese admits to a mutual fascination with Australians.

“I’ve not yet met an Australian I didn’t like,” Von Teese says.

In fact, most of her fashion collaborations so far have been with local firms. She previously produced a range of cardigans with Wheels & Dollbaby, while her range of dresses and coats, Dita Von Teese Muse, and the Von Follies by Dita Von Teese lingerie line, are in collaboration with Melbourne firm Lime Door Brands, with the lingerie initially stocked exclusively by Target Australia before its global expansion. “I just like to think the Australians really believe in me,” she says. “I have no other explanation for it. For some reason I work with all Australian companies and German companies (for perfumes). There’s something about the Australians and Germans, they’re like my cheerleaders, I guess.”

Von Teese is notoriously hands-on with everything, from doing her own hair & make-up for performances to her collaborations; for last year’s Von Follies debut at the L’Or aacal Melbourne Fashion Festival, she styled the show herself, using her own collection of props for all the models, whom she also cast herself.

“I remember last year having my tarot read and the same cards kept coming up. She said, ‘It’s about delegating, you need to start delegating’ … It’s something I have had to learn to do more. It’s helping … but I feel guilty.”

RescuTV chats to Dita Von Teese

Dita Von Teese on her Signature Style, Fragrances, Lingerie and Cointreau Fizz

pocketvenus.wordpress.com

elle.com interview

Burlesque star, style icon, and fashion muse Dita Von Teese is no stranger to designing lingerie or beauty—but this time she's bringing her creations to the masses via HSN. Her underpinnings collection ($25–$45) and two fragrances ($20–$75) will launch on the home shopping site on April 23. Expect lingerie that gives a nod to the 1950s with ultra-femme details like velvet ribbons, eyelash lace trim and control mesh. Before the goods become available, we spoke with the humble star about her inspirations, DIY beauty, and how to be a true sex symbol.

ELLE: What inspired your lingerie for HSN?

Dita Von Teese: Well, I've been a long-time collector of vintage. I have a long-standing affection for lingerie, but also as most people know, retro style. And I really wanted to use the knowledge that I have from my first career when I was 15. I worked at a lingerie store as a bra-fitter and buyer. For this collection, I wanted to bring together fit, function, and affordability with touches of glamour and retro style.

ELLE: What makes your designs both functional and fashionable?

DVT: I've always loved having beautiful lingerie to wear in my every day life, and I've never saved beautiful lingerie just for seduction purposes or for when someone else is gonna see it. So it was really important to me to make these pieces work well under clothing and give good shaping. They are pieces that you can wear comfortably, so you're not compromising beauty and glamour for fit and function.

ELLE: Could the pieces be worn on display, perhaps peeking out?

DVT: There are definitely a lot of pieces in the collection that I think you could definitely wear underneath a sheer blouse or with the top peeking out of a suit. I've always loved little hints of what's underneath, without showing too much. It's a way of being seductive but elegant at the same time.

ELLE: What influenced your fragrances?

DVT: This funny thing happened to me a few years ago when I was first approached to do my own scent. I had been wearing the same perfume for about almost 20 years, Houbigant Quelques Fleurs. It's a very old perfume house, very top dollar. I was dating a French man at the time. He confessed to me three weeks into our relationship that his mother wore the same perfume as me, so I had to change mine. I could've gotten rid of the man, but I chose instead to change the perfume. At the same time, I was approached to make my own, so I really got involved in the process. I was living in Paris, and working closely with the fragrance house to create something really unique and special that I could call my own signature perfume. It needed to have an air of high sophistication and glamour. [For HSN], I wanted to get to offer an affordable product in a beautiful bottle that still has that element that still feels expensive. It took a lot of time, focus, and ambition to get to the point where I believed that the perfume could replace my $300 perfume.

ELLE: What does the fragrance you created smell like to you?

DVT: As a little girl growing up in a small farming town in Michigan, my idols were women like Marlene Dietrich and Rita Hayworth. I did a lot of research about what kinds of perfume these women wore. A lot of modern celebrity fragrances have sweetness, vanilla, fruit, and freshness. I wanted mine to have that feel of sophistication and glamour of a different time, but without smelling like, old-fashioned or like your grandmother's perfume.

ELLE: What drew you to team up with HSN?

DVT: I'm drawn to it because my whole career and every aspect of it is about do-it-yourself glamour. I do not run with an entourage of makeup stylists, and I don't have someone dictating to me what is the right thing to wear. I don't have anyone advising me. Every one of my products—my lingerie, my perfume, and everything that I do beauty-related with regard to building my burlesque shows—is just me. And I'm really into the motto: I can do it, you can do it. It's not magic, you just have to have the ambition, patience, and desire to create it yourself. It has a special meaning to be able to offer these kind of products at an affordable price to other women that want to have glamour in their everyday lives.
