Dolce & Gabbana F/W 2023.24 Milan

a very good collection from them. quintessential Dolce & Gabbana.

Well.. credit where credit is due: this is great. Some seasons ago I went from finding them laughable and pathetic to actually feeling a bit sad seeing how lost they were, especially considering their own mark in the Y2K trend and how they couldn't even seem to at least recycle their own work for the sake of survival. This is way better than recycling and the revisiting thing they did with Kim, it's a step forward.. you can definitely see Vaccarello and Nensi Dojaka influences since it's more that type of sensuality and femininity than the more kitschy/aggressively sexual work they did in the early 00s but you can also see the superior confidence, experience and skills than these relatively new acts working with sheer pieces and lingerie.

I do wish they had gone a bit more 'modern' with these sheer pieces.. thick, ugly underwear or frumpy short shorts almost to apologize or 'tone down' the effect of wearing a sheer piece just feels so Prada/Miu Miu/the early 2010s era of Raf Simons prudishness, we're a bit ahead of that thanks to thirst trap culture (think the first few looks or the last few black ones) and frankly, it just looks better, less silly contrasts.

This isn't really Kim's 'brand' of vulgarity but I can definitely see how she could've shaken up their structure by making room for some much needed new input from other people in the team.. cause I really doubt they went through some generational awakening on their own lol.

This is actually a very refreshing return to form. That 2006 corset was a lovely cameo.

After so many years of "La famiglia" fake right-wing conservatism, they finally are coming back to their roots: the brothel.
I still wonder why they even did that in the first place. It didn't make any sense at all.

It's good. But still not really impressed when I can just look at the older collections these pieces are derived from. It'll sell very well, and be even easier to market. I can already see all the clout driven fashion accounts doing "then and now" posts with each look's derived collection all across social media. Smart move.

I'm glad they started to expend a little more cash on a better cast though. That is a sign that the industry at large is happy to welcome them back though, which is a peculiar thing to experience as the years go by.

Loving loving loving look #1, but really going back and forth on 1 thing. The fake fur. On one hand I think the plasticky modacrylic whatever looks blech and sucks out the charming eurotrash elitism that I used to find amusing with dolce and Gabbana, but on the other, trying to imagine the real thing, I don't know if I would get the total feeling of fashion forwardness. Like in my head I keep saying "come on, who are you pretending to be, just use the real thing" but does anyone really WANT to wear fur anymore? It seems so irrelevant and passé at times now. And I'm wondering why I am always complaining in YSL or Cavalli etc threads about fake fur. Perhaps I am stuck, maybe projecting. I don't know if these two really thought this through, in fact I think this is probably a more *woke* sales type move on their part (which may tie into what's relevant), but I think the overall fashion goalpost has definitively shifted. There are plenty of new designers who want to break out so badly into the status of people like Domenico and Stefano, plopping themselves onto this delusional pedestal of designing and selling $40k+ fox and mink furs to feel like they're actually somebody, when in reality it comes off as a pathetic larp. The people who are in tune with what's relevant (again not saying these two know lol) are not interested in using the real thing anymore. I mean seriously, what gen z kid, or maybe just plainly under the age of like 35 (which is the demographic I'm assuming people like D&G are trying to grasp) seriously has the desire to wear real fur in public? I think it may frfr being phased out, not even just in terms of morality, but look too.

While maybe different than what they have been producing for the last 10 years, it leaves a lot to be desired for me. I don’t find there’s that much offered in the way of clothes that you desire nor fantasy. It kind of just exists. No colour, no true sexiness or sensuality, and no glamour. It’s very mediocre compared to the exciting offerings from before.

I do appreciate the use of more recognizable faces in the casting, but even that didn’t really do much to elevate the collection in my eyes.

Their conservative years were good tho. Maybe up until 2014, it was solid even tho boring à la longue.
It helped them solidify their business after closing D&G. The women who bought the dresses in the past decade was probably older but with the money of her desire. When I traveled to business events and women events I saw a lot of those in D&G. I’m not sure those women necessarily bought the sex necklace from 2003 or the fabulous SM from 2007.

They have survived all the troubles they have experienced thanks to that switch. Even when Cavalli and Versace went more conservative, it wasn’t met with the same commercial success.

Domenico and Stefano were clever I must say. Now back to sex with Kim…

Generation Z started wearing fur. In January it was real winter in my city and I saw a group of young people wearing real (was vintage) and faux furs. I was a bit shocked as only older ladies had worn it before. Most people prefer puff jackets or coats when the temperature is very low.

finally a collection I like! mind you I have not liked a collection since 2007 maybe...
