Gong Li, not Zhang Ziyi, to lead Hollywood movie "Believe It or Not"

2006-04-17

BEIJING, April 17 (Xinhuanet)-- Noted Chinese film star Gong Li, instead of Zhang Ziyi, has been invited by director Tim Burton to lead the Hollywood movie "Believe It or Not," according to Paramount Pictures lately.

Gong Li, who is currently filming ace director Zhang Yimou's "Wearing Golden Armor Across the City" in Beijing, will join the cast of the movie, a biopic of actor-explorer Robert Ripley, starring Jim Carrey.

Zhang Ziyi, another Chinese rising actress, was originally invited to lead the film, but was finally replaced by Gong Li. Gong's fluency in English is reportedly the factor that won her the role. Paramount Pictures, producer of "Believe It or Not" said Gong is more suitable.

"Believe It or Not" picks up with Ripley at the time when he gained celebrity status through a "Believe it or Not" column that chronicled his search for the greatest oddities in the world.

The film is expected to be finished in 2007. Tim Burton is known for "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Corpse Bride." Jim Carrey is known for "Mask."

Gong rose to stardom over a decade ago with art house hits like "Red Sorghum" and "Raise the Red Lantern." She recently carved a niche in Hollywood after appearing in "Miami Vice," "Young Hannibal: Behind the Mask" and "Memoirs of a Geisha."

Moreover, she has confirmed her role in James Huth's English-language movie "The Yellow M," produced by the French company Telema with a budget of 33 million U.S. dollars.

Sounds cool, but Gong Li doesn't speak English better than Zhang Ziyi, on the extra features of Memoirs of a Geisha she had to have a translator cause she didn't speak a word of English so I doubt she suddenly learned to speak English better than Zhang Ziyi...weird article. But I love Tim Burton so this coudl be intersting :D

^Gong took intensive English classes after filming Miami Vice.

I think Asian age so well has a lot to do with the Chinese Food, i.e. a lot of vegetable, a lot of tofu, etc...

^But Asians have A LOT more ailments when they're old.

Gong Li is such an intense actress. My mom's always giving me lectures on why she's better than Ziyi Zhang.

I've only seen Gong Li in two different movies, 2046 and Memoirs of a Geisha, both had Ziyi Zhang in them too...I like Ziyi but I have to say I think Gong Li is a better actress too and she has more charisma, she just grabs your attention whenever she's on screen.

^ You should watch "Raise the Red Lantern". She's beautiful in it and the movie was amazing. Also, I enjoyed "Farewell, My Concubine."

My friend told me I should watch Farewell, My Concubine too! I'll have to look for both of them! :) thanks

This woman has an amazing presence on screen. It's not just her beauty. It's something else.

i love her, but i feel like that dress above doesn't really flatter her. sure, it shoes off her curvy body, but i feel like that gathered thing in the middle and the dress itself loks kinda strange

maybe cuz i pictured something else for her. heh.

She looked no older than 25 in Memoirs of a Geisha. Her skin is like wrinkle-free.

Indeed! Does anyone knows what are her Beauty Secrets?
