Harper's Bazaar Australia June/July 2010 : 5 Rising Models by Simon Lekias

After reading the title, I was a bit disappointed when I saw the cover. I was expecting Abbey, Cat, maybe even Sarah Stephens, Miranda, Elyse Taylor. The girls on the cover are not supermodels; they're basically unknowns and all look really interchangeable as they're all dressed the same.

Does Vogue Aus have a monopoly on the proper high fashion top models from Australia like Cat and Abbey, meaning that they can't shoot for HB Aus?

Anyway, the subscribers cover is much better; the colour adds an extra something. The main cover is kind of bland. Plus, all that white and we're in Autumn already in the southern hemisphere...

^it says rising. Plus cat & abbey are already established models.

The title is a bit misleading. I asked one of the mods to change the title for me when we found out the names of the models, but obviously 6 names was a bit too many.
But I agree - the word 'supermodel' shouldn't really be used in association with these girls. Even though the emphasis is on rising models.
To me a rising supermodel IS someone like Elyse Taylor, Pania Rose, Alice Burdeau.
Girls who have gone far but not quite into the stratosphere like Cat and Abbey etc etc.

I think the word 'supermodel' is thrown around a bit too haphazardly these days.

But putting that aside, I think the subscriber cover is absolutely gorgeous, and I love that Bazaar have dedicated a cover to emerging models.

Just changed the title :flower: Unfortunately all 5 names didn't fit so I had to go with something shorter. The other title was definitely a bit misleading!

I think it's one of those that's damned if you do, damned if you don't. Put it like this, this is MUCH better than a rehash of Jennifer Aniston/Kate Hudson& co, or those boring US Harper's Bazaar covers. They're taking a huge risk in putting 5 girls who are not as well known (if at all? Like I said I'm not a model person so I haven't got a clue who they are). Hopefully if this does well, it'll encourage magazines as a whole to take new risks, take a chance of a new face/celebrity, and go for something that doesn't rely on traditional 'celebrity power'.

awesome!

Just read the editor's letter and she mentions that these 5 girls were chosen as the fresh new faces who represent the shift in modelling towards a healthier, glowing look which is more reminiscent of the supermodels of the 90's. She also goes on to list the achievements of Australian models before them.
So basically the whole issue really is a celebration of this.
All of the girls also feature in their own editorials as well as a few group shots.

I agree that Aus Harper's should be applauded for their choice. It's a huge risk to put unknowns on a cover, but the entire concept behind it really works.

i always enjoy when fashion magazines support models from their country, i wish french magazines did that significantly (i mean, dedicating french models more than a single article in a 500 pages issue)..! plus the result is really impressive and efficient, the suscribers cover is simply eye-catching.

I love seeing Australian models on covers of Aussie mags, so I'm sorry to be a downer, but it seems so premature to have these girls grace a cover, (even if the emphasis is on rising stars). These girls are so new, the chances of them becoming top models (I won't even dare use supermodel ) are pretty slim. A rising star IMO would be someone more like Julia Nobis, who is very new, but has had international succes and now has the chance to continue to rise... but I guess it depends on what it means by a top Aussie model (success in Australia vs success overseas). Or maybe they know something we don't yet?

But if anyone does make it big I hope it's Bambi
I like Stephanie too. Juliana has that Abbey/VS pink look going for her, and I've seen her in quite a few eds lately, but I'm not that much of a fan. Isn't Georgia a New Zealander?

I agree completely here

Yes Georgia is a New Zealander ... generally the Australian mags can be a launching pad for Kiwi models onto the international scene, especially years ago, so they become identified as Australian models somewhat ... one of the more notable exceptions is Kylie Bax who went straight into Women in New York and made it big from there ...

i lv the cover and its good to see Bazaar follow in Vogue (Aus)'s footsteps and to start to promote new & local modelling talent via a cover ... iv commented on this before but Kirstie Clements has always been excellent at supporting Antipodean models ...

Interesting both Vogue and HB have come out with rising Australian model covers - I guess because of fashion week. I much prefer Vogue's casting. Samantha hasn't had international success yet, but she's been modelling for years now, and IMO is deserving of the cover. So, I think, for me at least, in terms of who 'deserves' a rising-star cover, it should be a new girl with international success (e.g Julia Nobis), or a model who's had a long career locally (without necessarily international success yet, but the chance of it).

I suspect Bambi will do really well though.

I flicked through the mag today at the newsagents. There aren't any great eds inside.

It is so great that the mag is putting Aussies on the cover, it could elevate their careers to new heights!
