vogue.comCouture 2010: Valentino Preview
The constant refrain these past couple of days at the Paris couture has been wardrobe—as in a considered collection of beautiful clothes that, you know, might actually be worn, again and again, as opposed to something that could only exist in the feverish imagination of Lady Gaga (or at the very least her stylist).
And at this morning’s Valentino preview at the house’s ateliers on Place Vendôme, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccoli have added their voices to that particular Parisian chorus.
Maria Grazia: “It’s a wardrobe. . . . ”
Pier Paolo: “It’s a wardrobe for life. . . . ”
Maria Grazia: “For a woman—but a younger woman. . . . ”
Pier Paolo: “Couture isn’t just cocktail or for the evening—it’s where you should be able to find a coat. Or a jacket.”
Ah, but this is still couture, and it cannot live and breathe if the concerns of everyday life impinge on the creativity too much. So the dominant silhouette is short—supershort—and resolutely A-line, swinging from the shoulders to graze the top of the thighs, with some full-length dresses for evening. Look out, too, for the details: the volume amplified by the placement of inverted pleating, tonal floral embroideries—“2,500 petals!” Pier Paolo said as one dress appeared—and many, many bows, which usually you’d only be able to spot if you looked at the back of the outfit, though they also turn up on what the duo call demi-gloves; basically, just the fingers and thumbs showing, with a hugely flamboyant knot on the front of the hand. Plus, everything will be shown with lower-heeled mules, embroidered with coral stones or floral beads. “Modern Cinderella!” they both said, because clearly, even Cinders needs to get dressed for a life that is about more than assignations with Prince Charming.
