Have celebrities ruined fashion?

when models were bigger and starring in movies etc, people complained because they weren't 'real actors' and only got those parts because of their celebstatus

and now when actors are bigger, people are complaining because they don't feel like they deserve to have their own lines or be the cover of a magazine.. they only get it because they're famous

The day when everyone sticks to what they're good at is the day that we might be satisfied

but that day won't come, the actors designing clothes will always claim that it's what they love to do besides acting, models becoming actors will always claim that modelling is somewhat like acting etc

people nowadays are multitasking like never before and sticking to only doing one thing is so old-fashioned

There's a difference, though. When models were bigger and tried their luck with movies, for the most part they failed. Big movies failed miserably and people had a field day laughing at them.

Today, when a semi-ugly celeb tries their luck with a cover they get another 5 covers though they may not even be photogenic at all. When movie that is as sub par as Ironman - with a seemily neutered Robert Yawney Jr - is released it seems to get decent reviews, coincide with a superhero costume ball, and get a nice little homage Vogue cover.

Similarly, Kate Hudson gets the cover of people's 100 most beautiful people issue as reward for looking like Buckbeak on her last Vogue cover.

There's an overall lack of accountability that results in really poor pop cultural products. In fact, that goes for politics as well, especially here in the US. Politicians are seldom, if ever, involved in real debates...it's just people spouting cleverly crafted rhetorics pieces.

Accountability is an obsolete concept. So is integrity.

what's wrong with kate hudson...?!?!...:o
she's totally cute!...

thing is ...
you will never be able to make everyone happy all of the time...
some will prefer actors while some prefer models...
and so on and so on...

the one thing that remains the same is that it will always change...
because everyone gets bored eventually and craves something new...
i mean..it has changed now..
there is a lot less lohan, hilton, richie, spears etc...
so in that way...the world is a less trashy place...
so i feel like we are at least headed in the right direction again...

*thank goodness for small favours...

:P

^Yeah she is, and to be honest I think the whole Owen Wilson thing added to her allure, but she's no cuter than her mom, who was portrayed accurately as the cute funny girl in the 60s - not the great beauty type exactly.

I'm not sure this is going to end anytime soon - the semi-ugly celeb covers, I mean, because the movies today are so bad that they need all the publicity they can get, superhero galas and all. The relationship is too symbiotic.

well...
come on now...
the movies may be bad...that's true.....
but the magazines are fairly atrocious as well...

i mean...
1/2 of the american pubs could go out of business and i don't think anyone would notice...

does anyone even LOOK at glamour mag anymore?
and what about those endless editorials that bruce weber does for W where you cannot see ANY clothes?!?!?...

fashion is ruining fashion if you ask me...

:ninja:...

Hell yeah....I think British Harper's Bazaar is the only commercial magazine that has anything going for it. It put a horse on the cover this month, even. Daring, next, who knows, bunnies maybe - the sky's the limit :D

they have ruined it in this age of stylists and commercialized non identity looks. they have also increased on the popularity on plastic surgery creating a troop of clones

but not only celebrities are ruining it
young teenbloggers (not in magazines and ads though) and semifamous people are taking over

As a young blogger I'm a bit offended. I take a different approach. I choose not to expose myself to garbage and therefore fashion has not yet been ruined for me. You choose what you're exposed to. If you don't like celebrities, buy different magazines, if you don't like bloggers, close the window.

Good question..
I don't think fashion is ruined but it is damaged. I would blame it on the internet

ofcourse there are quality blogs and it was never my intention to offend anyone,

but with everything that beomes big, which now blogs are, there are bound to come crappy versions of it, and with blogs there are a lot of them which could be because of how easy it is to start (and finish) one.. it's the same with everything that becomes popular

yes I know that most of them have failed, but it's much easier to take a decent picture (if you're not completly bad-looking) than it is to act through a whole movie so that might be why it's more common with actors doing the models job than vice versa

also actors and musican make good publicity since they're more household names and people who aren't into fashion might still buy the magazine that they're in, and although it's boring to see big fashion magazines like vogue fall for that, it's still good for the magazine publicitywise

I'm not saying that I like it, I would much rather see an amazing cover with a model than an okay cover with an actor but I know that my friend who isn't into fashion at all wouldn't even look twice at the cover if there wasn't a famous person on it

I'd say they have definitely changed fashion , as for ruined it I'm not sure. Stars have always had a relationship with fashion be that of a muse or free advertising basically , Mary Pickford did it all those years ago with Lanvin !

I don't know if it's celebrities that are causing this trend cycling but I think they have something to do with the way that you have so many micro trends now , and trends that become classics in two years eg skinny jeans. You only have to look at websites like who what wear daily to see the cachet and power that celebrities have now. And the endless onslaught of names to a product that claim to have had some form of design input. The time Fergie mistook a Balenciaga bag for one of her own 'design's springs to mind.

I don't think fashion has been ruined, but our ideas about fashion/style and the Hollywood celebrity based media's ideas about fashion are very disconnected and very distant. I notice that the appreciation for clothing here comes off as more intelligent and less about mindlessly going on and on about must haves and it bags and how we must have and covet these things.

Well celebrity and fashion is much more aspiration based. I live in essentially what is a working class area , now this is just how I interpret it , but to me when I see a girl wearing a juicycouture tracksuit or wearing ugg boots , that's probably the closest she is going to get to being rich, I see it as emmulating the wealth that people like Paris Hilton display.

I think, for the most part, no. They are just very wealthy people who can afford high-quality, high-end fashion. With a few exceptions, they don't choose for their clothes to be exposed all over magazines...wouldn't that be the paparazzi's fault and the nosy american people?
Style is style, and slathering yourself in brand names will not create it. Fashion cannot be "ruined".

to an extent..because common everyday people look to these celebs as style icons..where in fact most of the house hold celebs don't have any sense of innate style, and couldn't tell you that much about fashion at all.
of course there are a few exceptions..in my personal opinion, the olsen twins are admirable because of their style.

I actually think that stylists/models are now the leading 'icons' to many hardcore
fashion fans...
Does anyone notice that most threads on stylists rarely feature
any of their ACTUAL styling work?
It is only ever pictures of the stylist at shows or about town...
& ppl. commenting on their personal style rather than their merits as a stylist...
Which is perfectly fine when compared to endless pictures
of Lohan in tights as pants, or Hilton in a Juicy tracksuit...

From a business perspective...
Celebs have certainly changed the internal factors of fashion...
It is all so calculated now...
b/c instead of selling a fantasy, publications are truly attempting to
sell a lifestyle these days...
& ppl. are eating it up...
From clothing choices, to what they eat & where they eat it, to what they spend
their $$$ on...
It's fascinating...

From a creative p.o.v...
Few celebs are truly muses...
It is mainly a parasite type of relationship...
The designer is using the celeb for press..
& more than likely, their current collection is in no way inspired
by the celeb who would like to believe otherwise...

Personally, I want to see style...
Clothes, drama, mystery, beauty, stories...
I don't give a d*** that Reese Witherspoon raises her children
while wearing Lanvin flats & drinking low-fat iced lattes...
I just want to see compelling images...

i have absolutely noticed this too...
and have even thought of starting a thread on the TREND...

:innocent:...

I am always wondering how many of these
stylists are okay w/ their work going unnoticed..?
Esp. since many stylists are perfectly fine being behind the scenes..
Ppl. like Carine & Anna seem perfectly fine w/ it..
But Emanuelle Alt & Marie-Amelie Sauve always seem
uninterested in their photos...
It is quite bittersweet..
b/c for a long time, no one rly cared to know the ppl. behind
editorials...
& now the interest in stylists has reached epic proportions...

this thread is an interesting read.

it's interesting that stylists and models are getting more hype than actors these days. just look at the supporting cast section on this board, wayyy more activities in there than actual designer collection topics.

who knows, maybe eventually the focus will shift to designers, mainly women designers probably.

i dont think all actors are trashy or boring as hell...there are interesting and more alluring actors that may not be as famous to the public

I agree with the last two sentences , if anything is ruining fashion I'd say it was conglomerates but that's a whole different topic !
