Have celebrities ruined fashion?

no.
designers started, then stylists, magazines, whole media coverage did that. celebs are just people who mostly wear what they are told to.

yes I know that most of them have failed, but it's much easier to take a decent picture (if you're not completly bad-looking) than it is to act through a whole movie so that might be why it's more common with actors doing the models job than vice versa

I don't think so. If you have high standards, those covers are pretty atrocious for the most part. It's not just about looks - it's composition, pose, fashion, photogenic qualities, emotions.

also actors and musican make good publicity since they're more household names and people who aren't into fashion might still buy the magazine that they're in, and although it's boring to see big fashion magazines like vogue fall for that, it's still good for the magazine publicitywise

For one thing...the flagships shouldn't care. For another...By now, the movies need the covers more than the mags need them. God, most movies are painfully embarrassing. You can have more fun memorizing license plates.

If you really love something it would never become 'ruined' to you...People need to grow a thicker skin.

Well, I guess you can safely say that celebrities have had a bad effect on fashion imagery, if not certainly on fashion itself.

If you mean (ruin( by designing themselves, then YES.
It's similar to an actor becoming a painter. The initial passion was never there and so it is simply an expensive hobby.
Some celebrities do have there own style and are often acknowledged for decades because of it: Katherine Hepburn, Audrey H., Lauren Bacall, Chloe Sevigny....

For the most part ,yes. Most actors should stay actors and not go out of their way to become fashion designers, perfume makers ,etc.Sure ,there are a few who are multitalented and are capable of pulling things together in all of their different industries, but for the most part it's just greedy people wanting to cash in on stupid ideas using bad executions.

I've heard it before and I tend to agree that the word 'Icon' is so thrown around and so overused that it's totally lost it's meaning.Anyone can become an icon, which severely downgrades its grandeur.Audrey, Marilyn, Katherine, Lauren ,Chloe, etc. are no where close to the people raved about as icons now a days. They are way above them all.

^^ EDIT (referring to Bidwell's post)
"the initial passion was never there and so it is simply an expensive hobby"

GOD TO I LOVE THAT STATEMENT! i totally second it!

When celebrities say that when they were young they loved fashion magazines and dressing up in their mothers clothes and stuff... don't they realize that's what every girl does, but none actually thinks that she "deserves" to have her own line...
maybe it's not their fault, but some the work and pride of some persuasive agent/friend/mother. I can totally hear let's say Beyonce's agent lying/telling her " you are so gorgeous, so divine, so good looking, so glamourous, you should TOTALLY have your own line!!"... beyonce believes it, thinks about it, dreams about it, signs a multi-billion contract and then the trickle down effect just starts by the artist (B) doing her collection, her super fans buying it, she earns loads and loads of money from it, the agent reminds her who gave her the great idea, Beyonce wants to thank the agent, the agent doubles his/her salary, the agent thanks god and thinks it was worth lying in the first place...

pathetic...

^ I so agree. While plenty of good less known designers have to deal with paying rent and other issues, celebs who design crappy, extremely basic and uninspired clothes get paid like crazy. It's a travesty.

I was thinking perhaps I'm just being a snob about it all !

Beyonce's Mum used to design all their outfits that's why they have the line together...she says it's for average people though and the prices they charge definitely aren't average.

It's not celebrities , it's branding. When even a person can be made into a brand eg Brand Beckham , Brand Kate Moss then perhaps I think it's advertising that is ruining fashion and the confusion of need and want.

I studied Fashion Design for 4 years and had neither the time or the money to be falling out of clubs p**sed out of my brain & wearing no knickers! It annoys me that I am still designing mainly for myself, family and friends, whereas so-called celebrities who have the time and money to do the above suddenly become 'top designers' because their name generates publicity, even if it is adverse publicity.

Well, I can honestly say that I hardly ever venture or read the Star Style forum. Kim Kardashian, Lauren Conrad, and Hilary Duff are definitely not my fashion or style compass at all, I think they look awful.:yuk: So in terms of styling, I'm going to say hell yes, celebs ruin good clothes by styling them either really conservatively as to be boring or just badly.

In terms of fashion lines and actually designing and producing clothing, I'm kind of apathetic about it for now. I know they don't actually do anything, just approve the looks their teams come up with, but I don't buy any celeb lines because they are just awfully tacky looking and bad quality.

It's the lack of ingenuity, and the idea that we ALL want to BE a certain celeb that we'll buy anything from a celeb line that I find really offensive :innocent:

let them wear what they're going to wear. And at big events like the grammys ext. use them for advertising designers. But at the very least they need to be taken off the covers of magazines. He11 just keep them out of any printed advert material and all would be great.

As for starting horrible trends I think that celebrities can influence people to some extent but bad taste is a vice in and of itself. There will always be someone out their who loves all that is tacky. It is very annoying though when there's something one likes and suddenly it becomes hot due to an influx of celebrity exposure.

basically what i was gonna say, amazing post luxx!

I luv this subject.

Celeb "designers" are A ****ING SHAM.
I'de LOVE to see J Lo sit there and grade a pattern!
Insiders said that for her line Sweetface, last year I think it was, she went it TWO WHOLE TIMES during the whole year to oversee the line.
What a ****ing joke.

Not so. Print as a medium is falling behind. Why do you think Anna Wintour even puts celebrities on the cover? Sales. People are buying less and less magazines.

Magazine sales are the lowest they have been in decades.

I don't believe that celebrities as a whole are ruining fashion, but rather, certain celebrities are ruining fashion. The crazy thing is, that some of the guilty parties are people you would expect to have a little more taste and class. It just goes to show that money can buy a lot of things, but it can't buy good taste.

As for the "celebrities designing clothes" issue, I don't think that anyone should do anything unless they are actually going to put some work and dedication into it. If you're just out to make money, go home.

I didn't know about the magazine sales thing. That's really unfortunate. In fact, the solution to this celebrities ruining fashion thing might just be found in magazines. I think the problem is not as much in people twenty+ following celebrities leads as in those eight-fifteen. If a magazine with actual fashion was targeted to a younger audience - as well as introducing them to an invention called a model - they might just follow it.

I don't see how celebrities can ruin fashion. They're just mannequins. Some have their own style, some don't. Some look fantastic and others don't, just like normal people.

They are also who 'normal' people look to for inspiration, and they're an influence. Sometimes they kill a style and sometimes they pull it off and encourage others to do the same.

Whilst an interesting argument, it's kind of weak. You can't place a blame on celebrities. I think we all know that even though celebrities do have style, they always follow a trend created by somebody else.

I think they do affect fashion a little.
It's a bit like that with music videos. A song should allow the person who listens to it to be creative with the images in their head. After seeing the video of it, it just leaves you with a specific image whenever you listen to the song.
Celebrities are kind of like that. That's why I avoid reading magazines who focus too much on celebrity style.
I believe people would be a lot more brave with fashion without that.
