Now Hanging | Helmut Lang's Artwork

Before stepping away from the fashion arena three years ago, the designer Helmut Lang was known for creating minimalist designs that were often treated with a reverence that suggested Donald Judd himself had sewn them. Fitting then that Lang, who is largely responsible for the current collusion between the worlds of fashion and art, is now being shown in a gallery.

Starting tomorrow through January 28, Lang’s latest work, “Next Ever After,” will be exhibited at the journal magazine’s Williamsburg gallery of the same name. (Lang has also contributed a series of “art studies” to the current issue of the journal.)

The installation, consists of a single object: a found disco ball. “The mirrored ball is a good object to work with,” Lang tells the magazine, “because it has all these different reflections and at the same time it absorbs everything that is surrounding it. That angle of it was inspiring.”

As with his deceptively simple fashion designs, Lang’s installation is charged with a more abstruse meaning: “The idea relates to the Janus mythology, looking back and moving forward. It’s also about transitions and new beginnings, representing time as one half respects the past and the other one looks into the future.” What he said.

S/S 97 was the debut season of helmut lang jeans.
it was shown, mixed with the main line.
I'd say the first collection was mostly about reworking F/W 06 with more casual fabrics and simpler construction. (even though all the jeans collections had been composed of deja vu basically)
a series of t-shirts in nude, red and khaki which took over the slash design.
a print of the holy mother
the stripes, etc.
it seemed to me that their thinking on the second line had not jelled yet.
actually it was different in many things to the other jeans collections.
e.g. the price range
the price of the denim jacket was reduced to two-thirds from the second season.
the label was leather at first. but they changed it for fabric after that.
and the color of the raw denim was originally blue on the bright side rather than indigo,
and so on.
but before long things fell into place, and I remember, for the third season one store had bought about 120 pairs of the standard jeans per size,
and sold them out in a few days.

F/W 97 was entitled "renaissance angels & N.Y.N.Y.1997".
just watched the video again.
there was an effective use of nina simone's version of here comes the sun, as part of runway music.
which augmented the purity of this collection.
it was done to perfection.
