Helmut Lang's return...to art
Thursday, November 29, 2007
(NEW YORK) The fashion community continues to wait with bated breath on when Helmut Lang will make his return. While a fashion venture isn't completely out of the picture--never say never, after all--the designer's artistic prowess will emerge on December 14 with Next Ever After, his first solo gallery exhibition presented in collaboration with the journal, the indie arts and culture publication that operates a gallery by the same name in Brooklyn.
According to Lang, the installation is an artistic statement that speaks to both personal and historical mythologies. A singular, multi-faceted mirrored object will be the central focus of the installation--an object both stable and destabilizing. "Like Janus, the Roman god able to view past and future simultaneously, the mirrored sphere central to Next Ever After reflects while simultaneously absorbing its surroundings, creating a sensation both voyeuristic and self-aware," the gallery said in a release. "The mirrored object presented in Next Ever After is part of Lang's own personal mythology."
The Next Ever After exhibition is the artistic culmination of a yearlong collaboration between Lang and the journal. Ten unique studies for Next Ever After appear exclusively in its winter issue, as part of a 20-page portfolio that includes a conversation with curator Neville Wakefield. The exhibition runs through January 28 at the journal Gallery.
