Hijab Chic

does anyone know which issue that ed is from? please please.
Regarding modesty..in coutries such as saudi arabia where you are obligated as a woman to where the abaya (long black dress) and tarha (what ppl call hijab) girls are making it stylish buy buying designer fabric,, making it tighter, sheer...colorful..you name it...and they feel the need to compensate buy wearing alot of make up...which defeats the purpose imo...i was surprised last time i visited the coutry to see that..as you said..they are drawing more attention..and i think the whole point is not to. Even just the headscarf..some young girls who wear the headscarf outside of their coutries..(as you witness alot on paris, london. etc in august) tend to wear the tightest jeans, really high heels..and the most colorful and skin tight tops and almost p*rno-ish make up...and then they wear a headscarf in a very bright color...tie it around their heads like bandanas to make it look less "veil-like"...its very contradicting..but some feel the need to compensate for not showing their hair..which is crazy because hair isnt the most attractive female feature...your eyes.face..neck and body is....its realy turning into a "trend"" and is starting to become less humble and modest...
anyway, please let me know which issue the ed is from..id love to read it!

i'm saudi,i live in saudi arabia and i agree with everything you said. i mean girls here wear hijab because they have to, not because they believe in it or anything. that's why i think it's becoming less modest. the younger generation is turning it into a flashy trendy thing (not that there's anything wrong with being trendy and looking good but not to a point where it's attracting unwanted attention), they just don't get it i think. i don't mind colours or designer fabrics it's ok. but the p*rno make up!! it's really annoying.

i dont think hijabed girls wear heavy makeup because hijab makes them feel "oppressed" or they feel the need to compensate .. i know a lot of non-hijabed syrian/jordanian women who wear revealing clothes and they wear the heaviest makeup. the heavy extravagant makeup look is the signature look for most arab women , whether she's "mohajabah " or not..

i totallllyy agree about arab ladies and their makeup....no scanner, but i took pics from some arabic mags i have

I disagree with the wearing of tight/sheer/sexy clothes with a hijab, but i think makeup and some slight embelishments is fine

the proof is in the picas ...gorrrgeous features *jealous*

Thanks for the pics. i think the first pic (she's a writer her name is rajaa) is the right amount of make up for a mohajaba, other than that it's too much.
i don't know why arab ladies just LOVE heavy make up, heavy eye makeup is very normal day and night, night and day. i mean even in college i see alot of girls wearing heavy black eyeliner, black mascara, too much blush and bronzers.
i don't wear that kind of makeup even for patries and big events but some of my friends do.

well i guess they love playing up their features..i mean sure many would say 'let your natural beauty shine through' but hey..it almost seems more 'natural' than not wearing any at all! ahaha

i agree, rajaa's makeup is lovely  ive always thought miss al-sanie was gorgeous

i wish i could wear head scarves myself, i find them so exotic..
i like the scarve look with or without heavy khol make up,
with plain face, it looks angelic and pure, with heavy eye make up it looks real mysterious and promising

even thought i'm so attracted to this look it's impossible for me to adapt since its a cultural issue

I think this thread has shown that the great thing about Islam is it is open to interpretation and self worship. A muslim once told me that initially the point of Islam was self-worship... that is was meant to be a personal thing and that the aim was to get rid of the middle man in other religions (Rabbi, Priest, guru, shaman etc etc). Of course the current climate places so much false emphasis on the Imans but it is nice to know that women can be individual with the hijab if they so please.

TOOOO much makeup. It is erm.... a different cultural aesthetic I suppose but to me it looks horrid. Very very drag queen.

in Turkey hijabed girls dont generally wear make up..i think that it's ridicilous to wear nearly heavy make up(#83)because it doesnt look beautiful...and if you're wearing that much make-up,ok so dont wear hijab because they both are in condratiction in our religion...

oh no no that makeup i posted was from beauty and high fashion arabic magazines, i don't think the women go that far, perhaps for weddings or special occasions but ive never seen it it to that extent for day-to-day wear, i doubt you will too ... it was just a high fashion interpretation of how much arabic women love their eye makeup and colours.

and its def not for woman wearing hijab, if it was im sure they'd have a model in there wearing it and a hijab so obviously they think it would be inappropriate too

The girls in my pics wearing them have quite light makeup on

jiucy..the first pic of "rajaa"" (sp?) is the right way imo..others are just ridiculous...i dont thin in any culture a woman should conceal her face and paint it with that much make up..the term..ill go put on my face...girls should never been doing that anywhere is the world!!

^I agree with you. it's ridiculous but sadly i see alot of women especialy between the age of 27-45 wearing that much make up in weddings and big parties. but without hijab ofcourse because in weddings and parties here women and men do not mix.

this seems a bit contradictory..
i thought that the reason people wore the veils was modesty..
if they start wearing designer veils...
doesn't that make it vanity...
which i would assume is frowned upon...

something about this just seems 'wrong'...:ninja:...

Yes, it is a little bit funny.

At my school, the Muslim girls usually wear Gucci, Vuitton and Fendi monogram scarves in the form of hijabs. Nobody talks about it though.

I do.
I always do.
Always.

erm...well, sorry you feel it is funny. i thought we had discussed the issue pretty thourougly in the thread, but I guess ppl. still have their perceptions.

Thanks to everyone who contributes to this thread - it's pretty unbelievable, in forum-land, for such a normal, reasoned, un-prejudiced and open-minded discussion about a potentially contraversial issue to take place. Just goes to show how awesome TFS is!!:flower:

PS - Perhaps we should make a distinction between Arab hijabis and non-Arab hijabis ... it would probably surprise ppl. to know that Arabs actually make up only 7% of the world Muslim population. Not to mention, as someone talked about earlier, the whole heavy make up look and exaggerated eyeliner is a culturally specific asthetic, and is not necessarily transferrable to the majority of hijabis.

kind of a bad pic...but here you go ...I find them a bit silly, but then I'm not a fan of logos on anything, let alone my head!

well, there's nothing wrong with me...how about you?

and yes, I, as a Muslim woman, who wears a scarf, find it perfectly acceptable, both on a religious and personal level, for a woman to wear whatever headscarf she likes....it can have tiger stripes and spangles for all i care.

perhaps you would like to become an Imam and pass a fatwa banning "inappropriate hijabs", on behalf of protecting my religion from mockery?
