How Do You Walk In High Heeled Shoes?

ITA with you girls, height should NOT keep you from wearing high heels! I'm about 5'8" and have 37" legs. I rock the 5" heels on a regular basis!! My man is a good deal taller than I am, but sometimes I rock the crazy high high heels and we're the same height. He's confident and doesn't mind in the least.

CONFIDENCE is the key. I've eaten it with the best of them, I've stepped in pot holes and tripped, I waver and and have to catch myself. It all comes with the territory. Practice makes perfect (or at least a big improvement)!! I'd rather trip in my heels than live in boring old flats!!!!!

Do archs factor in when wearing heels?
Does having a more defined arch or not having one make a difference?

I personally think arches have something to do with it. For example, one of my friends has been blessed by having some kind of arch going on and can wear heels with ease even though she spends most of her time in trainers and hiking boots. Me, I wear them but I have no arches to speak up so it's not easy for me.
I do not know about everyone else but I find that the arch having people have it easier in wearing heels especially past the 3 inch mark.

I found this video the most helpful:

While I think she takes it apart in a helpful way, it's important to remember that the street is not the runway. She doesn't say it, but the video shows her walking in a straight line, one foot in front of the other. I read an interview with Jardel Oliviera De Sousa where he points out this as one of the mistakes many make. He says one should walk with the feet in line with the hips.

Here's the article, for any Swedish reading tfs'ers: http://www.dn.se/livsstil/trend/hanna-lar-sig-ga-pa-hoga-klackar-1.966134

some advice from a girl who wears heels every day:

- wedges are an easy start -- i found that wearing wedges daily i think developed the right muscles in my feet/legs that they don't feel contorted in stilettos/heels anymore, but they are much easier to walk in. might be good 'training' Thicker/chunkier heels are also much easier to handle than stilettos.
- ankle support will make things easier at first -- try a pair of ankle boots or something with a strong ankle strap before trying pumps or anything strappy.
- old lady orthopedic or gel shoe inserts and insoles do WONDERS, i have them in every pair i own, honestly.
- wear a new pair around your house for a few days before wearing them out just to break them in a bit.
- band-aids or bits of sticky felt inside help a lot with slippage inside the shoe; scuffing up the bottom of the shoes or taking them to a shoemaker to get more grippy soles put on can help if you find yourself skidding on the floor too often.

I can manage myself quite well in stilettos, but I can't do it in chunky heels, such as platforms. I do own a few pairs of Marnis, which tend to have a huge heavy platform, and I'm so afraid to use them!
I let myself go and buy them because they're so beautiful, but then I'm afraid I might fall wearing them on the street (I've done so a couple of times). It's basically with bad pavement or cobblestone that I have most problems.
Then I see bloggers and people on streetstyle wearing them and I asl myself, how do they manage?
Anybody has mastered these?

So I have really narrow (and flat) feet and half of the shoes with straps are too wide for me. They are too loose making it more "dangerous" too walk in them. It's annoying cause it means you can't always wear the shoes you love! Gel inserts won't always help. Does anyone know if you can have the straps taken in a bit (the simple plain straps) and make the shoes more narrow? Are regular shoemakers capable doing that?

I have wide and mildly flat feet. I'm OK with wedges, but I struggle with other heels... :/ advice?

Foot petals helps me tremendously! I just found out about this about a month ago and couldn't believe what I've been missing out on. I would definitely suggest to check out their website because they have products for each problem area of your feet/heel.

I also put the grip pads on the bottom which helps a LOT too!

I agree with lafindesiecle that wedges are a good start. I wasn't very great with heels until I started with wedges and now I can wear about anything with a platform.

no platform? no thanks lol

My heels all look ridiculous- I put in Dr Scholl's heel liners and ball of foot cushions...
It helps tremendously!

thin stiletto heels throw me off balance by pitching me forward (this is the nature of the shoe) but i find most shoes/boots with a platform help remedy that issue. it also depends on the fabrication, some designers understand the concept of balance and take this into consideration when the shoe is manufactured.

it does help to walk correctly with hips lowered and your center of gravity over them. shoulders back, spine straight and just good posture in general, but high heels are contradictory to good posture by nature so its a learned stride.

oh, and i love foot petals too.

i don't know about that...
but i always look for things that have straps with buckles that actually work so i can tighten things so they fit better...
shoes that zip up the back are almost always too loose and look bad/are uncomfortable...

I also find that shoes with straps and buckles work well for me. It's not the only kind of shoe I have, because shoes are my weakness, but it is something that I prefer.

Me too. Partly because my feet are a UK size 2/EU35 so it's really hard to find shoes that stay on my feet! The straps keep the size 3s on!
