However, if one is going to freelance for a magazine you should bring that up during the negotiations-signing/agreement rather than after the fact. asking beforehand and in writing is your proof of recognition if and when they neglect to print your name. and if they purposely left you out as a contributor it is their proof that you have no right to be in print if their conditions, upon signing the agreement, that they cannot guarantee such a request.
