The Language of Fashion: Which language is best to study?

Wow, that is the most ignorant thing I've read on these forums thus far.

that is not ignorant. that is what the UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT seeks. you can seek that through their employment section if you want.

english then french and maybe russian... if a buyer then prob chinese

What? Last time I checked, the US did not promote the Arabic language as being unworthy of learning because of that very reason you stated.

We're talking about fashion: the most practical language in fashion. Not the US government. How did they even become part of this convo? Backpedaling?

Fact of the matter is Arabic is a good, strong language on any resume - within and outside of fashion, too because of the wealth coming from it. But I'm more than willing to wager luxury brands are giving Arabic much more consideration and it is on par with Russian as one of the fastest growing languages in the industry on the PRACTICAL and ADMINISTRATIVE side.

Expansion, marketing, pr, buying, retail, all of them are bridging ever more into Saudi Arabia, Dubai, the Emirates, Lebanon (Beirut is quite cosmpolitan!), Egypt, and Jordan - most notably.

i'm not here to discuss politics and i only mentioned Terrorism as an example to the said discussion.

But you can cerainly find out what i said is factual.

Please .... we must keep politics out of this, and stay on topic. Any further discussion that might be intrepeted as political will be deleted.

i was talking about Portuguese as a language that will soon be needed. not that have i discounted other languages. Arabic i don't put as priority to learn. however, and i am saying it again, it doesn't hurt learn either. French is still top whether it's PR, administrative, sales and whatnot.

It's fine to disagree with me. I disagreed with you on Portuguese. But I'd appreciate if you didn't relegate any language to only being needed to know for one purpose.

I stand by Arabic and do not think Portuguese is a language that will be needed, except for with dealing with the models from that region. The Brazilian designers come into New York with strong English skills, atyp.

I agree on French.

we agree to disagree. however, i'm talking through experience when i discussed my stance.

Uhhh. I'm talking from experience, too. And not just recent. I've worked in and out of the industry for about four years now. Not to mention, my mother has worked in the industry for 20+ years, so, I know the trends.

I think it's all subjective. Obviously languages like French and Russian are good to know in the fashion industry, but where do you get Portuguese from? French comes in handy when you're dealing with designers, and working in Paris, especially you'll have to know some bit of French. Russian I can see as well cos a lot of the fashion marketing comes from Russian buyers, so if you're working in Fashion business that is highly credited. But Portuguese, why? A slew of models coming from Brazil is not a reason for the language to be needed. For something to be needed it must raise the business economically, no? I think learning Portuguese would be practical for the hell of it (it sure sounds nice!), but certainly not beneficial to your job.

anyway, ENGLISH is no. 1 ... French is a most. All other languages help too and that includes Portugese, Russian, Chinese, Arabic

In fact I do - (please don't try and purport people are not as intelligent as you because they do not agree) and I disagree Brazil is an emerging market on the level Russia and the Arab States are, which is why I am stating that Arabic and Russian are PRACTICAL languages for working in fashion.

You just said we could agree to disagree and this was very goading.

Knowing Portuguese is not going to have the market grow. You speaking it or not, the market stays the same. The model count doesn't rise if you can say "WELCOME TO AMERICA!" in Portuguese, Spanish, Gibberish, etc. Sure, they would be delighted to find a common ground. Is the market going to rise because of it? No. There are more important languages to know in the industry.

chinese ~ and then arabic in the next few yrs. those are the 3 main languages of the world (including english, of course).

For the fashion world, probably French, Italian or Japanese

However, for the rest of the world, probably Spanish or Portugese, as many models are now coming from Brazil (and also designers will probably follow)

Right on the money!

My guesses would be: French, Japanese (I know kanji is tough, I know Japanese high school students who found it hard when they were learning it for their entrance exams, but it's not that hard to pick up conversational Japanese), possibly Chinese (Mandarin, most likely) and Italian are the best languages to know..

I can speak English, swedish and french and as for next year i will have to learn two new languages.. one of them will be italian, what should I pick for the second language if I want to work as a stylist? Which language is useful? And I really want to learn chinese (mandarin), but however i don't know if it's availible at the school.
