is there a berkeley/bay area street style?

yeah. Birkenstocks and girls without bras.
it's a really liberal scene up there. when i went to Berkeley, i saw quite a few Rastafarians selling beaded jewelry across the street from the UC campus, lots of colour, baggy clothing, etc. not sure if it has changed in the past 4 years though

but Bay Area style is different all around, if you are in Berkeley it's different than what you'd most likely see in the city of San Francisco. it depends i guess.

Berkeley, tie dye shirts and hairy armpits...

i'm a total hippie so i love it...:p

totally opposite from SF which is more back east stylish, in certain circles anyway.

totally!!! :lol::lol::lol:

there were still some of the frizzy haired, bra-less, Birkenstock wearing women traveling around. but mostly they dress for comfort, i saw a lot in Urban Outfitters/Gap/Old Navy basics and warm clothing since the three stores were across the street from the campus.

San Francisco, like you said is very Boston/New York style with the warm clothing, trench coats, etc. but the club/hipster scene reminds me of LA's hipster scene (which is totally bad) and a bit of the German's "revival" of 80's jazzercise gear with a bit of drag queen chic.

think we need a little better style blog though. though i really don't see many inspiring looks when walking around the city, and haven't seen anything new at clubs/gigs lately.

I would love to see some photos. I haven't been back there in a about five years (too many). I adore the whole Bay Area, Oakland, Berkeley and San Fran.

^ same here. i love the bay area. it's the East Coast on the West. when i went up there, i didn't find any interesting fashion. all i saw were the chrome painted street performers on the Wharf. :woot:

Well I know there's Seattle street style. Would it be that different?

Well that could be because you hung out on the wharf. So many other neighborhoods to hang in and gawk: The Mission, SOMA, around Fillmore, out in The Richmond, and let's not forget Hayes Valley, Portrero, the Castro. Explore!!

the Wharf and Chinatown too :woot:

I gotta disagree, I saw plenty of interesting fashion. They definitely have their own distinct style up there.

well someone has to have pictures.... i'd like to see the bay area street fashion that i've been missing out on

haven't lived in the bay area in over 8 years so i have no idea what's on now... pics would be great!

I love San Francisco, street style would be great even if it was just for the pictures of the city and surrounding areas. From memory though the Wharf was pretty bland and I mainly rememember the horrible smell above everything else haha.

Well, if ya'll insist, I'll put some lithium batteries in my crappy camera and go stalk the fashionable set in San Francisco. Chances are everyone who catches my eye is likely visiting from someplace else, though.

I've been wanting to do street style photos here for awhile, but I don't want to be discrete about it--any tips on how to get people to let you take photos of them? I was thinking of printing up a card saying, "See yourself on this thread" with the webpage info on it.

i guess compliments go a long way. i think if someone went to the lengths to ask for a picture of them because they admire their style, the least the person could do was give you a photo. then of course you always have those cautious people who think r*pists/murderers can track their whereabouts with one photo posted on the internet.

good luck on your endeavor, i want to see some BA streetstyle.

I'm looking forward to it mellowdrama. Check out www.fashionweek-sf.com/. You can see what some sf "fashion" people say about sf fashion. And fashion week is August 23-25 ---that's not even a week,

i'm going to take some pictures for sure. i've lived in the bay area for a long time and there is a definite difference between san francisco style and east bay style. there will probably always be a "birkenstock and hairy armpit" scene on both sides if the bay - something in the water, i guess - but there are real variations.

San Francisco has gentrified so much in the last decade, and Oakland likewise has become a bedroom community for white and Asian San Franciscans who can't afford to buy in the City (SF) - so these towns look different now than they did before, culturally and stylistically. And Berkeley, for better or worse, remains a college town, with the most casual comfortable and cheap looks being the norm.

Anyway - this thread has given me ideas, so I will take some photos. Should be fun!

BTW, is there a thread dedicated to "the Sartorialist" blog? I'd love to discuss some of his posts. His photos are always inspiring.:flower:
