Japanese Street Style #1

Let's put my layering thing to perspective a bit. Layering is much more extreme from some of the American and European fashion shows. Leaving the closet or the house with just about EVERYTHING on at once. I thought the shrug sweater and leggings under skirts was an example of being overdressed. I even thought tucking boots into jeans was overdressing at one point. The definition of "fashionable" varies from culture to culture. Most of us others are more about the finest clothes worn in the finest ways. Japanese style is more like "throw some clothes together and see what happens." There aren't many Japanese femmes in fashion that I've seen to be any more impressive than any models from shows in the United Kingdom, France, Italy, or even the United States. Styles just seem to work... just 'cause in Japanese fashion. One of the risks taking in layering is that you tend to look overdressed. Wearing too much at one time. Most of us American and European types find a certain amount of harmony in layering clothes, but not really like the Japanese. Everything just strangely works.

The pictures are amazing but why can't I see these when I was in Japan?

really? i had seen tons of when i was in Japan.

I stayed in Tokyo for 5 days and it's very rare to see such stylish people on the streets in Shinjuku and Shibuya, Harajuku is an exception.

I was in Tokyo for 2 weeks in April and saw stylish people pretty much every day.

It makes me nervous that there are two objections against my opinion in a serious tone :P During my trip,I saw stylish people but not very frequently.I expected more when I was planning my trip.

Markie, which areas did you visit ?maybe I should go there next time.

I stayed in Koenji but I spent time all over the city.
My fave. areas were Koenji, Daikanyama, Aoyama, Omotesando, the area surrounding Inokashira Park, Nakano, and the area by Nippori station. Ginza was nice, too. I didn't like it around Shibuya or Shinjuku stations as much as the rest.

Every day I left my hotel really early in the morning though and didn't get back until late at night, so it's kind of hard to keep track of where all I went. :P I will say though, that it really pays to get lost in a city you're visiting and just walk around wherever your feet lead you.

You'll see more fashionable young people on weekends. During the week, they are at school and wear uniforms. But I see stylish people everywhere in the bigger cities of Japan. Not so much in the smaller towns. ^_^

Last weekend I went to a farmer's market in San Francisco. I saw a tall pretty caucasian teenage-ish girl in full Gothic Lolita wear - she even had the little lace hat! The amusing part was that she was with her very suburban looking parents. I think they were a little embarrassed. I had to laugh.

they're always so daring and most of all--very kitsch & playful.. which makes them so interesting to look at. I'm a closet japanophile. ^_^

I love how experimental Japanese fashion is
And even if it looks quirky... they pull it off as looking cool!

yes, i just got back from Tokyo and I saw stylish people everywhere. Nothing too crazy though, just nice. People are not afraid to wear whatever they like, I admire that. They don't just follow trends like sheep.

Anybody know where i can check out those japanese hairstyle magazines, online for guys? I've never seen hairstyles so informative, with all sorts of angles and lengths given, than a japanese hairstyle magazine.

I got to Tokyo or Osaka for 3 week everys year, They have got to be some of the most stylish cities around. So many diffrent styles and the shopping is so great (and cheap.)

I must say what I've found of the past 3 years or so is whatever summer clothing I buy there some how shows up on the spring/summer runways 6 months later and the same with winter clothing. Japan seem to always be ahead of the trend.
