STYLE INSIDER: JESSICA STAM

You’ve been red, blonde, now you’re brunette. What inspired you to go dark?

I dyed my hair black because Katie Grand asked me to for a shoot, but I kept it because I felt like a rock star.

Describe your style?

Classic with an edge, but it’s always evolving. Lately I’ve been wearing more color and pattern, it’s a matter of what tones work with my new hair. I’m constantly being inspired by different designers. Just today I decided I want to add structured silhouettes and androgynous pieces to my wardrobe.

Your essentials?

Jeans, tank tops, and Alaïa everything! I clean out my closet every spring but it’s still overflowing.

Who is your fashion icon?

Alison Mosshart because she is a modern rock goddess.

Marc Jacobs famously named his Stam bag after you. What’s your favorite accessory today?

My rescue dog Carl – he makes me happy every day.

If you weren’t in fashion what would you be doing?

I would be a marine biologist or ballerina.
