I don't know about anyone else, but I would watch Johnny at age 99 in an infomercial about wheelchairs at 2 am on a Wednesday morning. He better keep it coming long after 50!

Pirates Of The Caribbean star Johnny Depp is nearing the end of his acting career, insisting he will not appear on screen after he turns 50.

The 43-year-old heart-throb is concerned that his ageing appearance will affect how he is seen by the public.

He says: "I won't last in film much after I turn 50. People go on about how well I look for my age, but what happens when it all drops? I could end up as the Cliff Richard of film."

That's pretty stupid if it's true. It follows the stereotype that people of a certain age shouldn't be on the big screen, that Hollywood only wants to see youth, youth, youth. At least if you're so talented, and a MAN, one would think you'd use the opportunities that are handed to you so easily.

Johnny should know he gets nominated for awards not because of his looks but because of his talent.

Hopefully he didn't really say that.

Sounds like low self esteem to me :ninja: You don't hear this sort of crap from Anthony Hopkins, that's for sure ...

^ I agree. If he did say it, I am sure he was joking. I HOPE he was anyway.

yeah, he was probably joking.
i remember robbie williams said he was gonna retire at 30..and what is he now, 32?, and he's still around unfortunately.

They ALL come back eventually anyway in Hollywood. They retire and then expect us all to make a huge deal when they "come back" to grace us with their presence.

:woot: Here's a shout-out for your comeback at age 51, Johnny, just in case I forget to do it later :p ;)

"Scissorhands forever"

Your greatest fan,

instead of tryin to change something women try to look 20 and step back and now the guys too ? why not boycott hollywood? or DO something ?

This is the 2nd time I've read the word oogle today. What does it mean? Google? Eagle? Im confused.

...or Paul Newman, or Clint Eastwood... suck it up Johnny boy! :hardhead: No sympathy here!

Johnny's not retiring in seven years. he'll get some amazing script...will read it...fall in love with it and want to star in it. bottom line.

It sounds so childish, like "Wah wah wah I want to be gorgeous forever." Gimme a break. Your problems are so small!

yeah, remarkably vain for someone who always seems to choose unusual/nontraditional roles.

though maybe he'll have a second career, perhaps as my ageless cabana boy.

Although a total retirement would certainly be disappointing, I don't think setting such a goal is a bad thing. Actors like DeNiro risk tarnishing their former achievements by appearing in one mediocre film after another. Given Depp's taste, a DeNiro-esque decline is unlikely, but if he wants to put film on the backburner during his golden years, I wouldn't complain. As Happiness said, he'll be sent some great scripts. Even if he only works on one every two years or so, he'd not only be able to enjoy his life, but each project would (presumably) be of exceptional quality.

I think this quote was taken out of context as was Depp’s infamous “USA” remarks some years ago.

We all have to remember Depp ‘accidentally’ fell into acting – at first Depp was a fine musician who was encouraged by Nic Cage to pursue acting after the band had split and he had a series of dead end jobs. Depp was then immediately cast in Nightmare on Elm Street, then in a small but pivotal role in Platoon and finally of course as Tom Hanson on 21 Jump Street. Anyone who has seen the show knows the sordid history and from the 3rd season on – Depp was no longer ‘acting’ – he was just there for contractual agreements. Depp of course got the part mainly due to his looks and the show was sold on his image and he loathed the whole experience.

Depp then hid under excessive make up for Edward Scissorhands and was critical praised and after a series of critically successful independent films and turning down major lead roles in high profile films such as Speed, Legends of the Fall and Interview with the Vampire for bold choices such as Ed Wood, Don Juan DeMarco and Donnie Brasco, Depp was every critics dream and every studio’s nightmare. Depp was box office poison in the mid 90s and I personally consider the decade to be his best as Depp was able to essentially do what ever pleased him artistically and worked with brilliant directors - Polanski, Gilliam, Jarmusch. Depp now had a career based on talent and no longer did the ‘image’ constructed for him plague him.

But after Sleepy Hollow and of course Pirates – Depp had a new and wider fan base who adore him and as he was the recently voted “Sexiest Man Alive,” a title which I’m sure humours him, it seems like we are all back at square one – where by his image is again celebrated – but this time around his talent is equally distinguished – it was long overdue.

The whole situation probably mystifies him and his quote references not everything will last – whatever goes up must come down. I would love to see him act as long as he can stand the industry but if he decides to retire and return to music I would equally be happy – he truly is a fantastic musician. I honestly don’t think he is being superficial – just cautious of his “new found” success.

I agree with you on most of the things - he really had a great career in the 90s, now I'm quite not so sure what to think of him. But I don't really believe this quote...it sounds total bullsh*t. Usually, these little "articles" and "rumours", especially the recent ones (he and Moss in a film (the article also had with "quotes" about the project from Depp) etc), are not true at all. Media is just trying to cash in writing about him as much as they can now when he is the flavour of the month. He is the nro 1 money maker right now. I think this whole thing is getting out of hand...

If this really is true, and not a joke, then we can really say somebody has really turned in to a hypocrite :innocent:
