Jonathan Anderson - Designer, Creative Director of JW Anderson & Christian Dior

Every time I see that dress with the bustle, it makes me angry. It's horribly done. The crewneck neckline is what solidifies it being pedestrian and ugly. If by the third season he doesn't have it together, we've got a problem and in for a long ride. Or is his contract only a short test one of three years ?

^It’s the opposite it’s 5 years instead of the usual 3. He probably used the opening at Chanel as leverage. In all the interviews he and Delphine have given so far the common bylines are 1. he’s nervous 2. they don’t expect a miracle with the first collections but they’ll be patient with him.

Ah ok, thanks for that info ! Makes sense. I get that he's nervous and that there's no miracle in the first collections (despite several debut collections from other designers being heavily lauded), but we knew a year in advance or so that he was going to Dior and so far it is falling so hard. His last Loewe collection is billions of lightyears ahead of his debut Dior Homme collection and these red carpet looks. I really hope he proves to be the right pick.

Mia's dress is probably the best? But he's already set such a low bar for himself. Dior HAS to be, at the very bare minimum, graceful. It's a core part of the house's legacy. It says a lot that Galliano could literally pile on pounds of fabric, embroidery, embellishments, accessories and props on his pieces and they still had infinitely more grace and elegance that that blue COFFIN he put Alba in. I wish at the very least the bustle and train were a different color, or the skirt was shorter or something.

I have faith in Johnathan's talent. I think he has the makings of a pioneer. But ONLY if he learns to be flexible and fluid with his tastes - a quality that is almost non-existent in the industry today.

Just looking at all these looks and it is clear that red carpet will be a struggle for him. These gowns and tuxedos really are lacklustre whichever way you look at it.

Maria Grazia really was skilled at red carpet looks and in a way Jonathan probably won't be able to compete with that. Which could be a problem since Dior should really be dominating at eveningwear. They have the most skilled artisans in the entire world crafting their gowns, there is really no excuse for bad tailoring or fabrics that crease easily, etc etc.

Anyway, this whole Venice debut of Jonathan's Dior isn't really hitting the way that it should be. This should be a way to whet our appetite for the Spring Summer show, but instead it's left a lot of us scratching our heads and even thinking, "is he the right choice for Dior?" This is not the kind of energy you want to be having before a debut show.

What's more the first look is getting dragged all over social media, which is probably not great PR either.

DIET PRADA

Alba dress is not only wrinkled but also obviously very wet for 30-40 cm on the back - Ayo's red chanel was wet and wrinkled too - so I really wonder if there was not an accident before, like stepping in unforecasted acqua alta high tides, or a boat taking water.
It happened to me countless times, it's parts and parcels of living in Venice and I usually end barefoot with the trousers rolled-up to the knees, so I would not blame Dior and Chanel is that happened to these ladies too, but I don't see how it could have happened between the Excelsior and the red carpet, there are literally 50 meters between the 2 locations. It's a mystery to me.

I really don’t think the criticismo is about the state of the dress, more about the style?

I love your comment, but acqua alta is really inusual in august and all those necklines, décolletés in the back, froncés and pleats were atrocious, wet or dry.

So far only the Greta Lee combo of bar jacket and black long skirt, and partially Mia Goth's (the bottom draping) were decent.

I refuse to accept that half finished and sloppy are the new "Dior nonchalance".

I appreciate he’s using more of the constructing aspects of the Dior Atelier than Maria but that blue dress is a complete oxymoron. Love the color and appreciate the padded bum but why go with a tiered front and have the back be completely smooth. Also for such big gown (well at least on paper… your debut red carpet piece under such a big house), send someone from the Dior team to make sure it’s presented well. Those wrinkles are ridiculous. Also again, like Julia Roberts… pull your hair back or in this case style it somewhat. Middle part and lose with some texture… groundbreaking. It’s a a red carpet, in Venice, debut of a major designer for a huge house and your beauty look is looking like you just woke up on a random summer morning.

Much definitely prefer Mia’s dress, looks much better on her than the mannequin.

The fit of that neckline is atrocious
You can tell they altered the dress last minute so she can wear a necklace.

Yes the style too is to be criticized but it's obvious to me both Alba and Ayo's dresses had accidents, water damages and wrinkles, just before the red carpet, otherwise they would have tried to dry them with steamers and hairdryers ...

The accidents were just the dresses. I saw the pics of the Dior staff working...but the result looks more like a drunk monkey running amok with a sewing machine.

"A testament to Monsieur Dior"...Well, Monsieur Dior would disinherit all them if he was still alive!!

Ayo’s dress was in Taffetas. Taffeta wrinkles so…
I think sometimes people on the internet don’t have basic knowledge of fabrics.
Maybe her stylist should have been more considerate into asking for a 1986 taffetas dress to be reproduced. But I don’t see no real accident on that one.

JWA had a combo of hell: questionable design + accident.
It’s funny that people are so offended by the crinoline. The most annoying part of his dress is the back of the dress (without the crinoline). That décolleté is so unfortunate!

The stylist is so triggered and is now sassing people on social media who are critiquing the Dior dress LOL!

It’s a little bit tactless and embarrassing on her behalf TBH.

Just accept it was a bad styling decision and let it go girl. Snowstorm or thunderstorm or apocalypse, it doesn’t really matter what the excuse is. The dress was ugly, unflattering, and above all a total PR disaster which is only being exacerbated by her pettiness.
