Karl Lagerfeld's Chanel successor revealed?

Maybe it's Marc leaving LV? What he says at the end of the LV vid sounds very much like a farewell: "It's been a very emotional season, but now that it's over, it's been a good experience." (something like that)

If so, I don't know what I'm gonna do. I'll ask my roommate however to tie me to my bed so that I won't jump out the window.

First thing I thought of too...This'll be disastrous and a whole new Tom Ford leaving Gucci thing.

Karl leaving Chanel would be like...there is no comparison for that. It's impossible. Karl=Chanel and vice versa. He'll leave in a coffin, that's when...

The only thing I picked up on after watching the Style.com videos, was Pierre Berge calling Riccardo Tisci the 'greatest designer of today'. Perhaps Tisci -> YSL?

Chanel is way too gimmicky for Alber Elbaz - Karl creates undeniably beautiful clothes and of course, he basically re-founded the House of Chanel, but Chanel is about novelties, splendidly stupid little decadent luxuries - Elbaz has a much deeper woman in mind and so I don't think he could design all of the interlinked-C logoed clothes and accessories without hideously stepping out of his natural habitat.

I totally agree with you!

I'm so anxious to know! I really hope Marc isn't leaving LV, but I have a feeling that might be the big secret. :(

Maybe I was not listening well enough but I did not get the impression Marc was saying a farewell at Louis Vuitton . He was just referring to designing that season maybe ? I don't know, but I hope he does not leave .

man, I almost didn't make it through the first page  whew, I'm glad Chanel shut this news done asap b/c karl literally does equal chanel. Even though I haven't really cared for the past couple of seasons, I agree that he won't leave Chanel until he is off this earth for good!

I can't really imagine marc jacobs leaving LV or who would replace him for that matter. If you thought Gucci went south after Tom left, just imagine what LV will be like if marc were to leave :innocent:

No way. Chanel is waaay too silly for someone like Alber to take over. Chanel's all about the cheesey Chanel lifestyle and the corniness is probably too overwhelming for Alber.

I dont care if Karl is retiring, just as long as he doesnt start designing for anyone else.

It would be nothing. There was no clothing at LV before Marc arrived. They'd be back to Speedy and suitcases.

Agree on the notion that Karl will only leave in a coffin. And that's the only right way to do so for him. Chanel without Karl would be like LV without Marc.

Ergh, this better not be what it's all about. It better be not.

I wouldn't be surprised if Marc Jacobs retired entirely, but it especially wouldn't be suprising if LV's ready-to-wear died. I never thought it was anything impressive to begin with and - though I don't know the numbers - was it even successful?

First of all, thank god the whole Chanel & Karl Lagerfeld splitting thing is false. Phew, thank god. Second of all, that little comment marc said at the end of the video does make me do a double take at the situation. For me, Louis Vuitton is nothing without Marc Jacobs. Marc made vuitton what it is today. Sure, the clothes weren't the main attraction the house stands for, but season after season I've always enjoyed his collections under the Vuitton label and if this rumor is true, I think i'd die a little inside.

I don't really see why Marc leaving Vuitton would be such a bad thing. It's a leathergoods house so it's perfectly acceptable IMO that he bows out and focuses on his own collections and lets someone else take the reins. As for Karl and Alber, I think the rumor's pretty ridiculous, and Grazia seems to just want more attention. Could they have chosen a more groundless rumor?

this is to much change to worry about
LV without Marc is devastating to even consider, without him they'd be luggage at an airport. I never want to see Marc replaced. Then again i cant imagine someone taking over mcqueens label yet it happening. I love Karl and i love his collections season after season but Alber for Chanel would be Ludicrous(in the most fabulous way imaginable)
I hope they dont start this musical chairs with the designers again

Since Marc arrived at Vuitton:

1) the brand doubles its size every 5 years
2) it is (maybe arguably) the biggest luxury fashion brand
3) represents 70% of all profit made by the biggest luxury conglomerate that LVMH is

these are not good times for luxury brands. even if they are still making money, it's never a good time when you've been growing in double digits for almost a decade and all of a sudden you have to wrack your brains to get out of the crisis (scale back, cancell store openings, firing people, improving internal processes...)

something huge must happen internally to fire Marc Jacobs.
just like i mentioned with chanel, the relationship between the brands and the designer is much more than a contract here.
they are not there just because of the clothes they do, they are the face of the company, the icon, the one people recognize on the streets, they are one of their biggest assets, worth millions...

i am no expert in the matter, but i just can't see any of these things happening.

the only thing i got out of style.com was the Pierre Bergé comment too. But it's strange he would say that, as I imagine his relationship with the PPR group to be somewhat "rocky" after what happened years ago (if i expect remorse from someone in fashion, that is Bergé)

Lv and Marc is not comparable to Ford at Gucci.
Marc has no distinct aesthetic and the reason why LV is so poular now is because Marc has great relationships with celebrities, knows how to create press and started the *it* bag trend, making luxury bags more desirable to the masses.

I totally agree with this statement, even to people that aren't within the fashion community or on TFS, the normal people :smile:p) associate these brands with these designers which most fashion houses can't say. If I asked my roommate who Alber was she would say "who?" but to Karl or Marc it's "ohh those designers for Chanel or LV," they are literally the face and the icon of a brand...

I've never known Vuitton without Marc Jacobs so it'll be very interesting to see who takes over if he leaves.. not that I really understand why he'd want to. That is, if the rumours are true.

well that's true. But I'm sure If Alber would switch to Chanel, within months everyone would know his name, no less because of the whole press around (exspecially) Karl.

Personally I think they shouldn't be a new designer before Karl passes away  I just can't imagine Chanel without Karl I just can't. No one would be so quirky at the finales like he is :D

What is going on? How is Tisci involved with this?
