Moss will give you a dress off her back
By Lorena Blas, USA TODAY
Kate Moss doesn't care if someone else is wearing her dress.
It's true. The new line of clothing from Kate Moss Topshop arrives this spring at Barneys New York.
"It's just stuff I wear all the time," the British supermodel tells Vogue's next issue, which is on stands in New York and Los Angeles today and hits stands nationwide April 24. "Vintage pieces from my closet that I absolutely love, but which I could never really find versions of anywhere else."
It seems that Moss, who was dropped from several ad campaigns after a British tabloid ran photos in September 2005 of what looked like her using cocaine, has returned to the top of the fashion world with a vengeance.
She has agreed to do Kate Moss Topshop for at least two years. According to Vogue, her job was to show her favorite wardrobe pieces to friend Katy England, creative director of Alexander McQueen, and Topshop so they could rework the pieces to Moss' satisfaction.
Why Moss? British fashion lines recognize that she is among those fashionistas who are "compelling because of their ability to mix designer and vintage in an utterly intriguing and original matter," according to Vogue.
Talk about the collection started when the model ran into Topshop owner Philip Green at a dinner. They joked about working together, and several weeks later, the deal was struck.
"She's a fashion icon," Green tells Vogue, "so whatever she did with us had to be true to her; it couldn't just be her name."
Moss, 33, agrees. "With this collection I can do what I have always wanted to do with clothes," she says. "You know, you find a dress, but you want it shorter, or tighter or sexier. … I have been a model for so long that I know when something does, or doesn't, look right."
And more important for many, the price will be right. Designer Luella Bartley, who has known Moss for years and describes the model as a "very smart businesswoman," says, "Women are going to go crazy that they can get one of her dresses for just over $100."
