Lu Yan

I showed this one to my mom, who is Taiwanese-American by nationality (but of mixed lineage) and she was captivated in the worst way possible. Said something along the lines of "this girl is horrifying, but you can't stop looking at her!" Of course, the fashion industry probably expects this type of reaction. If this is the fashion industry's idea of a joke I don't find it particularly funny. I wonder if she knows she's being used in this offensive fashion; I would never take part in this.

Oddly, she looks the best in this candid photo:
ly10.jpg

than in all of the professional shots. Do the other 3 girls look similar to her, just less exaggerated?

What is her name exactly, Lu Yan? I know of no Asian name spelled "Lv".

and btw, my mom has spent time with Hakkanese (ke jia people who migrated from south central China) while in Taiwan (I think there are 5 major ethnic subgroups in Taiwan), and she said they most certainly do not resemble this girl although anything is possible. If I had to guess, I'd say perhaps Mongolian or Tibetan but I really can't place her (have to admit, I'm hella curious, too).

Anyway, using her to generate this sort of reaction is not humorous in the slightest. For once I wish the fashion industry would take Asian models seriously if they are going to hire them at all.

EDIT: This might sound offensive to some people but I'm going to say it anyway--I don't think it's terribly likely that she's of Han background because her teeth are so beautiful. Nice and even and perfectly straight.

wow, you all are crazy, becuase she is a model doesnt mean we have the right to rip her apart, she is different, personally i would rather look different and break euro-generalizations about beauty and forget everything that we are indoctrinated to believe, she is a compelling beauty, her looks are intense and fierce, expressing the variation that we as a human "species" can have, i think she is HOT. if she was in a public place all eyes would be on her becuase of her intense natural beauty.

OK, I am not chinese but there are quite a few beautiful chinese ladies of mixed and native origin. Some examples ar Zhang Ziyi (crouching tiger.... &Memoirs of geisha) Maggie q, Cecilia cheung. I rather like the true chinese but mixed race chinese like maggie q are also gorgeous.
I know not all models are supposed to be beautiful but i will repeat what every one here has said She is awful and not the least bit captivating even in a wierd way

You know it's really funny . I sort of realize more and more that my tastes or my appreciation of beauty is quite uncommon. I've been a fan of Lu Yan's beauty for a long time , that might sound strange but she never seemed to me as being 'weird-looking' or anything . Personally I'm French , and she used to appear regularly in French mags a few years ago , she always seemed so beautiful to me , but I just didn't like it when she dyed her hair in blond. These pictures that have been posted aren't flattering to her , I regret the fact that my scanner doesn't work to post other pictures where she really looked amazing.

I have to add something else , I guess it depends from where you can from but a few years ago she was really successful in France and she even won a place as a first runner-up in the important Metropolitan model contest and I don't think that the model agents or the people who appreciate her beauty were/are specifically people who were/are just interested in beauty which seems unusual or 'out of the norm' or even worse that think 'her beauty is used in an offensive fashion' , or would have that racist reaction of being interested in foreign type of beauties to make fun of them or considering them as a 'joke' , sorry I truly find her beautiful . It's true that on my side , I just find models these days very generic in terms of beauty but Lu Yan never seemed to me as 'weird-looking' or ugly-but-captivating like Omahyra for instance (which I've never been really a fan of) , just as much as Gemma Ward never looked that much 'alien-like' or 'out of the norm' to me (she just seems extremely boring and generic to me beauty-wise) .For the person who asked , she actually comes from a small village from the Jiangxi province in Southern China .

I have to add that I'm really shocked by the reactions she generated in this thread.

I just read this from newspaper:She will be the co-star of Edward Norton's next movie, she played a manchurian princess:shock:

BTW,she is not Mongol.I remembered ive seen a interview of her,she said she never thinks she's pretty but not that ugly either.Shes got great personality, and now she is the fashion editor of Harper's Bazaar Man Style(China). But also shes still modeling,i saw her face in Lanvin's show at Chinese art museum, here is the pics:

to EDISON27:Yes,I heard 'bout the movie as well. It's called the Painted Veil, starring Naomi Watts(my favorite actress ever!!!),Edward Norton,Wong Chou Sum(Huang QIu Sheng) and Xia Yu.
They shooted in China for quite a long time back in Augest,September and October.

Um, woah the ugly comments were unnecessary, she's not conventional pretty but from what I've seen so far of her she atleast has the power to captivate and obviously generating some very strong opinions. I think she'll be the type to grow on me, she has strong poses and I love that she's not generic pretty, which I find utterly boring yet I still buy into the preconcieved notion of "beauty" which is another tangent altogether!

I think she looks great. great lips, great eyes, great jaw and cheeks, great facial structure in general. her eyes certainly are different, but i can't see them as repulsive. I mean for those who think she is repulsive, is it just because of her eyes? Because the rest of her face is very genericly beautiful.

^yeah I agree. She does have nice features but her eyes are slightly off-putting. She isn't nearly as bad looking as everyone is making her out to be though. :(

finally, some opinions i can relate to, you may deny my next comment, but after hearing her credentials from nanker, i am sure some opinions have changed, i just neede to make the statement, go ahead and attack my words, i am prepared for that, well have a nice day

nanker_phledge I    that 4th picture of her with the long bangs and icy colors (#43)! :woot: Thanks.

She's totally growing on me... like a weed.

to me, a big part of fashion hangs on the very fine line between extreme beauty and extreme ugliness. (e.g.: galliano's ss06 show) the point is to capture your attention in a way that makes you notice and creates controversy, no? i have many model friends, and the gorgeous ones are always so depressed, being told constantly: "i already have so many girls that look like you." plus, alot of times ugly looks pretty over time and with repetition, and pretty looks predictable over time. like charlize theron looked the best the first time i saw her, and kind of boring over time. on the other hand, oprah has never looked better.:D

Wow, some people on this board are really cruel. I don't think she's ugly at all! She is striking, but in a good way... at least that's my opinion.

she is undeniably cool!! i just love her.

Wow, I am astonished at this thread. Sure she's unusual looking but I've seen so many models uglier than her! Why the hate?

That Life Style cover is great...
