Maggie Cheung

I haven't seen Maggie's acting so I can't judge. But in beauty, Gong trumps Maggie.

Maggie's pretty but she's always looked like an old lady.

What? an old lady?!

I agree Gong Li is beautiful, but I prefer Maggie's effortless style, on and off camera. Gong Li has few candids so, PR photos aside, I really can't say what her personal style is.

who do you guys like better? Maggie of Gong Li? In terms of both acting skills and beauty/style.
They are of different style, although I like them both, Maggie definitely give me a lot inspirations than Gongli on dressing

For me, Maggie is a clear winner. She makes that Givenchy Couture look easy to wear
And it takes an incredibly skilled actress to perform a role as she did in In The Mood For Love, so subtle but so emotional...

Clarification and pictures

I have gone through this entire thread. First a few notes:

The following is not about Maggie Cheung Man-Yuk, the subject of this thread. It concerns Maggie Cheung Hoh-Lee, a well known actress on Hong Kong's TVB network. Cheung Hoh-Lee has done bikini commercials, etc. Cheung Man-Yuk was last in a TVB drama in 1984 immediately after she placed second in a beauty contest (Miss Hong Kong possibly) which was and still is a typical springboard into movies and TV in Hong Kong.

yes, she's very classy and elegant considering how she struts around in a bikini for slimming commercials after losing a lot of weight, and considering the blunt way she behaved after the 2003 tvb awards by directly insulting the other nominees in her speech:

TVB's anniversary celebrations ended last night in a happy and lively atmosphere as the awards were passed out to their recipients. However, after the fierce competition of the female lead role award, there have been rumours that before 6 o'clock on the evening, the award was going to Kenix Kwok, but this was changed to Maggie at the last minute.

In response to these report of fighting to the last minute, Maggie indicates that no-one knew until the very last minute who would win the award. She offers the example of past years when she won the award for best partnership and she was halfway through getting changed backstage when they announced the award so she had to toss her trousers over to a crew member as she rushed out onto the stage. When the results are announced, the only person who knows is the presentation guests and the MC's. As for Kenix wishing this award could be her wedding present, Maggie says: "Really! Maybe it is because she lacks a representative piece, maybe if she works harder she will have a chance!" Do you totally believe that the award is yours? She replies confidently: "Thank you! I also have to thank Kwong Wa because without him, Lui Sei Leung would not be so lively."

Earlier I posted the cover of and EastWest magazine that Maggie Cheung Man-Yuk was featured in. Here are a bunch of other pictures from that magazine. The first several are from an editorial about the Tram a train that was considered outmoded in the mid-20th century but that still moves people around Hong Kong.

Gong Li is one of the most beautiful women on the planet. As far as sheer beauty goes she is leagues ahead of Maggie Cheung and most everyone else. She is also a wonderful actress who can carry a movie herself.

Maggie Cheung is incredibly stylish. While she is an extremely attractive woman she doesn't have the drop dead, stop traffic, cause riots beauty that Gong Li has. But she has an effortless style that carries over to her acting. She is essentially out of the movie business--I think she has been in 5 movies released since 2000: The terrible "Sausalito" which tried to capture the magic of "Comrades, Almost a Love Story" and abjectly failed; "In the Mood for Love" one of the most luminously beautiful movies ever made and Wong Kar Wai's masterpiece; "Hero" in which she was one of five superstars, all of whom were wonderful but she especially so; "2046" in which her role was a very short cameo/flashback; and "Clean" for which she won the Golden Palm at Cannes.

That's it. Like a lot of Hong Kong actresses during the 1980s she made as many movies in a year as some American stars do in a decade. She was always in demand and was a very important part of a vital film world.

Maggie's is beautifully elegant with a casual air.

Oops. On the post immediately above the credit for the images should be EastWest Magazine, Spring/Summer 2005

That question is a very challenging one. Maggie vs. Li...

At first I was like, of course Maggie. Regardless, of whatever, She has soooo much style, and really amazing personality... you cant top it...
but then I remebered the time when I saw Judou, and other films of hers (Li), and I remember the strange deep feelings that came up. Sort of an all encompassing thing... just from Li's presence on film.
so, I agree, ah, she also is amazing. Maybe you cant compare them. I dont think either would 'win'
wow what a question.
its like what do you like better,,, peanutbutter or jelly?
ah, thats maybe going in the wrong direction actualy, but anyways

I am sorry I have to say that "Clean" is overrated. Several independent films in the States are bettere than it.
Love to see Maggie in Balenciaga. Thanks for posting!

I didnt know it was highly rated...

I thought it was good. Not amazing. But with a few really nice touches here and there.

It had the cool element going for it, because of real rockstar cameos, and Maggie was good. She's always good. Nick Nolty was good. There was alot of good acting. I thought in some respects it showed a true view into a gifted aging addicts life. Both good and bad sides.

But it didnt hold together especialy well, or create a really strong punch. It's hard to rate movies better or worse because there or so many different kinds of movies and everyone has a different 'favorite' movie. You know?

I was excited to see her again. Did you know that it was released several years ago outside of the states??? I hate that.

I wouldn't be so sorry. "Clean" was by no means a wonderful movie.

Oliver Assayas made one terrific film, "Alice et Martin" but since that starred Juliette Binoche he doesn't get that much credit at least from me since I would pay to see a film in which Juliette Binoche read the Paris phone book.

I would agree with the Cannes jury though--since they voted her best actress of the 2005 festival.

I got a video of it shortly after it was released in Asia--all one needs is an all-region DVD player. There are plenty of of legit sources in Hong Kong from which to buy non-pirate DVDs that aren't encoded for North America.

We will probably have to be content with appearances by the Maggster at places like Cannes or her recent jaunt to Edinburgh for a film festival. The kicked the festival off with "Centre Stage", an amazing movie. She also did an acting masterclass dressed in her typical "offstage" casual but elegant gear. Will try to dig up some pictures.
