Most brief biographies say that her family moved to Kent, the town of Bromley, shortly after they arrived in London. She went to school there and moved back to HK with her mother when she was 17.

I have noticed that place names in the UK are often used as a shorthand for other things like social class, sophistication, etc. It is much the same in the U.S., of course--if someone makes a point that she is from Brooklyn it is very different from someone saying they are from the East Side of Manhattan, for example.

In some of the articles about Maggie's childhood the author writes that "she grew up in Kent" which might signify something to those in the UK who follow such things. Could sethii or anyone else there help on this one? Does it mean anything other than a place?

Hope this makes sense.

And thank you so much, sethii, for the video links. Impoossible to get too much of her. :flower:

She was married to Olivier Assayas who wrote and directed "Irma Vep" (in which she played Maggie Cheung making a movie in Paris). They were married afterwards and he wrote and directed "Clean" for her after they were divorced.

Amazing.

I have read that she still has a home in Paris.

Bromley has poor and rich parts but overall it seems to be above average, in terms of social status.

from upmystreet, info on Bromley:
_____________________________
Family income - High
Interest in current affairs - Very high
Housing - with mortgage - Medium
Educated - to degree - Very high
Couples with children - Very low
Have satellite TV - Very low

These young people have made a lifestyle choice to reside close enough to the major conurbations to obtain the benefits of the city without actually living in its centre. In their twenties and early thirties, they are well educated and are developing their careers in professional and managerial jobs.

They are living in purpose built flats in attractive suburbs and satellite towns. Many are still renting, although some have purchased their homes.

They use diverse means to get around. Where possible they will travel to work by public transport, by bike or on foot. However, the majority do have a car and will often buy new, expensive models.

These people are very comfortable using the Internet in all aspects of their life including financial services, purchasing gifts, CDs and books and booking their holidays and leisure activities on-line.

For holidays, the USA, Canada and other long haul destinations are popular, as are weekend breaks and winter snow holidays. In their spare time they enjoy sport and exercise. They also like spending their money on shopping for clothes and eating out.

They are interested in current affairs, and whilst they tend to read mainly the broadsheet papers, they show no bias to any particular title.
