Marc Jacobs to produce third, cheaper line? IHT

ralph lauren is one of the richest and most successful men in the world...
and i think that is exactly who marc jacobs would love to be...

Oh, I didn't even think about the Ralph Lauren connection. If there's anyone that knows how to balance opposite ends of the market spectrum it's him. He succesfully produces everything from the extremely high end to the more mundane cheaper lines. This is the route that Marc Jacobs should go and it's a niche that isn't completely filled, or at least one he could bring new ideas to.

Ralph Lauren is my guilty pleasure as well.

Whatever, I think MJ and MbyMJ is enough.

I can see this become a feud between the snobs I have for friends "Oh is that Marc??" "Yes honey, MARC JACOBS! not MbyM or Jacobs &Co"

Probably everything owned from the main line will lose so much value cause its all gonna be replicated.
Jacobs &Co  :ninja:

I would agree that the overall goal Marc and Duffy have in mind is the creation of a lifestyle brand akin to what Ralph Lauren has crafted for himself. I think thats the overarching dream they've got going for them but I can't help but think that Marc's overall aesthetic is not particularly suited towards that. Ralph's great asset is the fact that his aesthetic is so constant. No matter what changes he makes in his collections there is always the sense that the Ralph Lauren man & woman are very clearly defined. All you have to do is say the name Ralph Lauren and it conjures images of affluence and Americana. Its a very specific niche and an even more specific brand identity with a universal appeal. Its a very accessible image that has served him well.

I don't feel Marc's brand has that kind of across the board acceptance allure. In fact I feel as though the Marc look is very love it or hate it. Granted there are enough people (myself included) who love it for it to be extremely profitable but not enough I would think to sustain a 3rd line. Especially if the things that attract people like myself to the brand are compromised for the sake of economics. I'm willing to pay an exhorbant amount if I feel an item is well made but I'm not willing to pay even small sums if the quality is poor no matter whose name is stamped across the label.

Isn't m3 a gun or something? Sounds like a mix up of, as liberty putted it, a sports brand, a machinegun, and replica-Y-3.

Made he was wearing a Y-3 sweatshirt, jogging on the motorway and holding a gun in his hand when he suddenly found a name. "M3!"

this would defnitely help with countefiters. why purchase imitation marc jacobs when you could have the real thing for a few dollars more. I agree the quality will probably be worse than the other two lines but, it definitely help more people gain awarness about the beauty that is marc jacobs bc they'll actually be able to afford him.

first thing that came to my mind was: rehab might become marc's second home.
so many lines, so many shows, so many bussiness...lots lots pressure

good move commercial wise, but i can never cope with all these lines if i become a designer. i rather stick to one good line and enjoy life. add a second if need to. but all this thinking is for later on
look at stella mccartney...her clothes does not ever worth the price point. but than again..the price point is really what makes her clothes so "special".

I completely agree with you. Marc's much too different every season to have a signature mood.

i think this is a great idea, since his M by MJ prices have gone up as well as his main line. i'd love to see MJ do target, or MJ @ target prices for that matter. i think if anyone can pull this off, it'd be MJ. he gets away with a lot, the lil' rebel kid

I think Stinky Rat and those pleather bags were surely the first experiment with a lower priced line. Personally, though, I think that stuff is just so dull. Its like why bother? Its like he is trying to branch out and go cheaper, but he doesn't want to give it up and go all out like michael michael kors and sell to Macy's, so hes torn and it just will not work.

I thought he shelved the idea like 3-4 years ago.
Well, if that's the case then I can't wait for it ...

I agree with this. I see no reason why he can't incorporate this idea into Marc by MJ? And even if he has a lower priced line, there are still going to be people who cant afford it, there is always a market for knockoffs. Reaching a "broader" audience is just about mass marketing. Because it will attract foot traffic from people who can afford the lower tier. And the people who can buy the more expensive items will pick up the cheaper ones too when they make thier big purchases. They are just going to create a heirarchy within their clothing line...

Marc Jacobs 3rd Line called MARC3

Marc Jacobs has brought us classics and much to talk about with his two lines: Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs. He and his partners are now considering putting more on their fashion plates with a third line, Marc3.
Marc3 will be priced under Marc by Marc Jacobs. This third line will allow the brand to reach even more consumers than before. Marc3 could be equal to the success and caliber of the partnerships with H&M and big fashion names (Karl Lagerfeld and others). Marc3 if successful could mark history. High-end labels very rarely come out with an additional line let alone a third line. It is even frowned upon for such a brand held in high esteem to create a second line. Many brands do not want to tarnish their names or integrity. Yet, Marc Jacobs and his partners believe he can overcome that stigma. They are ready to go out on a limb and be trailblazers.
Marc by Marc Jacobs has seen so much success. However, creating a new line could dilute the 2 other brands. Consumers may opt for the lowest priced label or opt out as a whole. Some critics even wonder if the proposed name would be recognizable.
However, Jacobs appears to see an opportunity to fill a void. His product lines are constantly knocked off. And in order to combat fast fashion a third line might be the weaponry needed. I already support the other two lines (sometimes from afar and sometimes financially!) and I would surely support this line. Jacobs has a vast amount of creativity. Sometimes it seems as if it is infinite. He stretches every season when it seems that other designers are just putting out variations of last season’s designs. He has never been fearful to create his heart’s desires. Never mind the critics and naysayers, Jacobs has everything he needs to develop Marc3. And I look forward with unbridled excitement.
