#27 looks quite Pop*Katie Grand..maybe because the eccentric styling makes me feel that. I'm glad finally Ms Alt tried to do something different.

I'll probably never get tired of their collective creativity and approach. I like the element of caprice that's always been consistent in their style. I think Penelope Cruz's editorial along with Gaga's editorial are the least bit impressive among their recent work aside from that everything else retains the Mert & Marcus touch - vividly elegant and trenchant.

^ I think Penelope's and Lady Gaga's editorials could've been better had they been longer. I feel like these US magazines never give their cover stars long stories that develop into something special. Four or five pages is too short to really do anything special. Not like the long VP editorials which are just gorgeous.

Not like anyone's interested, but this black and white gothic style that they've been doing quite heavily lately (Love, Vogue Paris, etc) seems to be taken directly from Irina Ionesco. It's great of course, but in general they seem to adopt a lot of other artists' styles into their own.

I mean they are known for copying every photographers work. So theres nothing very surprising...

Actually, I am always very interested to find out the inspiration (or source of copying in this case) behind shoots. I googled her work and you are right, some of Kate's pics from Vogue Paris feel like exact copies of her work.

^It's indeed interesting to know. Now we can add her to a very long list of photographers M&M are inspired by.

^Who's else are they inspired by? I'm curious since I don't know a lot about photography but eager to know more of course!

OVer the years, M&M have produces work inspired by:

Helmut Newton
Herb Ritts
Robert Mapplethorpe
Peter Lindbergh
Guy Bourdin
Chris von Wagenheim
Steven Meisel
Steven Klein
Jeff Bark

inspired - it is a politically correct replacement of a copycat.

they could be 10 times professionals, but they would never get such powerful energy and unique vision as Newton did, such academism as Mapplethorpe, such glam surreality as Guy Bourdin, such pervercy as Steven Klein...
and, btw, what they produces is a total fashion photography. i mean they are trying too hard to seem artsy, but in fact they will never be.. while almost all their "teachers" were working for fashion (except Mapplethorpe), but comsidered now as an artists (maybe, except Meisel)

btw, mikel, You forgot to add Man Ray to this list)
that last Penelope shoot and some earlier work (sept 2005 w magazine-the one and only i truly luv) are soo Ray-esque

of course they have a seductive visual style but that's all.
Personally I don't like this at all.
It's unthinking photography and doesn't require
a great deal of photographic skill.
But then, that's pretty true of many
of the 'new' young talents in photography today.
as Fabien Baron said in a recent interview
'They do their own thing and listen to their gut'...

They not only copied legends photographers, also photographers og now as Sims, Inez & Vinoodh, Craig McDean, i think they have a very strong visual power but I do not think it right all the time for inspiration in ta work performed.

If I'm not mistaken that's Marcus third on the left and Mert second from right
