The Big Idea
Wannabe muses, take note: Chanel's Karl Lagerfeld pays no mind to the loveliest girl in the room. He prefers looks that make a statement. "It can't be just pretty lipstick and eye shadow with Karl," explains makeup artist James Kaliardos. "It has to communicate an idea." The bright idea for this Grand Central show was "old New York," so Kaliardos brushed flashy, gilded shadows into geometric shapes that evoked the Art Deco shrine that is the nearby Chrysler Building.
Kaliardos painted the models’ lids with Chanel Fluid Iridescent Eyeshadow in Ocean, a shimmering aqua. It may have evoked visions of Bette Davis and “The Golden Girls” of TV once upon a time, but “the truth is, it’s pretty,” says the makeup artist. The sea-foam green shadow was a hit with the designer, too. “Karl loved it.”
Conspicuous logos may be passé, but Lagerfeld always finds a clever way to make Chanel’s iconic double C's hip. Kaliardos described the exaggerated strokes of black shadow—try Chanel Soft Touch Eyeshadow in Ebony—in the creases of the eyes and underneath the lash lines as elongated C's. “It’s like the logo, just stretched out and disconnected. I thought it was very glamorous.”
