Totally 100% agreed! We watched that earlier in the year in English class before reading Catcher in the Rye.

Dead Poets Society (another movie viewed in English class!)
Igby Goes Down
Garden State
Elf (it brings to mind the scary ordeals elves go through when they come down from the North Pole..very thought provoking.) :P

what did people think about after watchnig 'garden state'?
I didn't get that movie...

I think understanding these type of films have a lot to do with age or the life you lived, and your mind set. I don't have either the age or experience to comprehend these movies, but I guess the mind set.

It had to do a lot with feeling conscious again, since he was on depressants for the most part of his life, and never felt anything- pain, sadness, love, etc. In the end, it was really a typical movie- guy meets girl, girl changes boy, boy and girl in love for ever and ever. To me, a lot of stuff was extremely corny. I.e. the scream in the rain. I have to say though, the scene between Natalie Portman and Zach Braff's character in the bar: the dialogue and performances were brilliant. It rang so true, in my opinion.

^ I love the scenes with Natalie and Zach in the bathtub, and by the fireplace. My favorite 2 scenes probably. It's also a huge story about growing up...how your parents aren't always around, and how you have to depend on yourself, but for so long he didn't feel anything, so he wasn't really "himself". I myself don't understand the feeling of not knowing where/what home is, but with friends/siblings/cousins that are away at college, or in their 20s I can see what they're going through and can understand it. they're all going through that phase of "finding themselves." I was surprised at how dark/depressing the underlying themes of the movie seemed to be...I initially thought it was a comedy, seeing that Zach was in it...how mistaken I was!
