Music = Fashion?

i strongly believe that music affects fashion. especially if you're really into music. i know what i listen to affects how i dress. it's sort of a way to put what's on the inside on the outside. you know?

It's kind of an indicator that your taste in music is narrow... guys who dress hip-hop usually don't like anything but hip-hop, etc. I like too many different kinds of music to be that influenced by it. I was dressing kind of emo/rocker for a while, but it was more because it was trendy than because I liked the music.

i don't find that to be the case for me. i may dress like one type of my music but i have the broadest range of bands and singers than anyone i know. and people always comment on that when they listen to my stuff.

if your taste in music is reflected in your taste in clothes then i think it is just intentional, or that you're subscribing to the image on some level (not that there's anything wrong with that... ). but no i don't think there's any correlation... in the same way wearing glasses doesn't says anything more about you than that you have poor eyesight, with only in narrators in books qualified to know from a face the life and intelligence of a person. :ninja:

I work in music and I definitely don't think it is true that you can see on people what kind of music they are listening to. Maybe if someone chooses his lifestyle as a package solution, but otherwise not. For example I know quite a few people dressing the rock chic way but they listen to baroque music....

I agree with this in general. Of course there are exceptions, but often when people take a very big interest in music, it does reflect on the way they dress.
my own personal taste in music is very narrow and when looking at myself, I'm not sure what came first, the music or my interest in fashion. however they are in some way combined and people always know what music I'm into (indiepop) by just looking at me.

I like the point Sunrise_Serena has made, your fashion and music sense has a lot to do with your social group, I utterly believe in that.

I don't think that's necessarily true. I believe it depends on what you're looking for in a friendship. The only things that are important to me concerning this subject is whether or not I enjoy hanging out with people and whether or not I can depend on them. Most of my friends have different style and taste in music than I do. This can even make a relationship more interesting in my opinion. I mean, I already know what I like. People with different interests can show you things that you don't know much about yet.
But I'm sort of wandering off topic with this..

On Topic: I think music only influences your style when you're really focussing hard on letting said thing happen. I mean, when I like the sound of a certain band it doesn't necessarily have to mean that I like their way of dressing. That's like hearing a friend of yours playing the piano really well and then thinking: "wow, she must have a great sense of style, I want to look just like her."

Certain types of music can put me in a mood that will make me dress in a certain way, though. Like when I've just heard a mellow sort of song on a sunny summerday I'll feel like wearing nothing but a light sundress.

But purely looking at this in the sense of genres.. Like dressing punk when your into punk. Well no, I don't have that. Could be me. I can only write what I know.
