Naomi Campbell slams supermodels

^indeed. Where did she 'slam' anyone or appeared angry?
People try to make controversy out of nothing.

And she is right. Nowadays popular girls are TOPmodels, not supers. People need to go back to calling models 'models', and the top girls 'topmodels'. Supers are a thing of the past, Gisele being the last, and they are not coming back any time soon.

I see Naomi's point. but she does annoy me shouting her mouth off about everything . The 'supermodels' of today are certainly not defined in the same way as before, although i would love to see more models in music videos!

I think it was more a case of reporters asking her the question looking for a headline quote so that they could print a sensational "Naomi slams blah blah blah!" and have everyone shake their heads and go, "Oh, that Naomi."

Honestly, I think the major reason Agyness Deyn gets so much hate is because she refused to stay in the tiny box all the fashionistas want their little models to stay in. To become a super you have to step outside the high fashion arena but others just want their cute little -ovas to be shy and sweet, barely speak a word of English, pop up for the requisite amount of seasons, be grounded, say a lot of nice words about how they're so unambitious and "real". "Fame? Me? Never *bats eyelashes*." and then disappear to make room for the new import. It's pretty sad :ninja:.

The word does get thrown around - mostly because there are no supermodels after Gisele. There could have been. But there aren't. A girl like Anja - with the natural beauty to be a supermodel, has had campaigns for years and years, yet she just got her first Vogue cover this year. British Vogue has been trying to make Lily Cole and Agyness into bigger models - when it's obvious it's Lily Donaldson who has the natural allure. Everyone seems to have become confused about the role of the very successful model - there will NEVER be another supermodel unless a girl who has the body, face and personality is allowed multiple campaigns and covers at the same time.

Most bona fide supermodels have been native English speakers, or at least effortlessly able to speak English from the beginning of their career - as long as 16 yo Brazilians or Eastern Europeans are hailed the next big thing, that has to be replaced every two years (at most) there will never be a new supermodel - because they can't read the game and understand it. They don't know the culture, they don't know the language - they don't have a chance, despite all their beauty. Just look at Snejana and Sasha....

You are right. The 90s super were supers because they had the whole package (face, body, charisma, high-fashion appeal and mainstream appeal), something that hasn't been replicated since Gisele.
Out of the current top models:
Anja is very beautiful but in haughty way and is just too elegant for mainstream (only Christy could get away with being a constant class act). Lily D has the face but a disgusting body. Lily C is the opposite (I like her face for fashion purpose though). Snejena is too bland. The SI angels are too skanky. Sasha is far too weird looking. I don't think she would be considered beautiful in any culture, you have to have a fashion sensibility to get her. Gemma is 'editorial' beautiful: without the make-up and styling, she is weird looking, like Sasha. Doutzen is too bland (possibly the most beautiful of the current crop, but with little presence and charisma). Agyness is a stunt artist, and a flavor of the month-type: there is nothing classic about her and she will fade.
Etc, etc.

Cat McNeil is the closest to a super package, she has the face, the sex-appeal, the attitude, but she won't make it, imo. There something about her that put too many people off (probably the b*tch face ).

The only way for current models to become a "supermodel" is to date really famous men and I'm not talking about DJ AM/Josh Hartnett type either. George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Leo Dicaprio caliber stars. Look how well that worked out for Gisele. :innocent: Do you really think she would be as popular now if she was still with the male model Scott something or other?

I agree with her and don't think she is really "slamming" anyone.
I guess that is the thing about being a b*tch though....
everything you say just comes out bitchy.
:innocent:

it's based more like this ....

  1. Top TIER Model
  2. Top Model
  3. and just plain model

Agreed. I had never heard of Bar Rafeli before she started dating Leo, and she's always being referred to as 'supermodel'. I haven't seen any of her work since, either. Same with all the models like Petra Nemcova- the Sports Illustrated type models. With Petra, now I'm not at all saying she didn't go through an awful experience, because of course she did- but you can't deny that her profile rose 1000% after the tsunami and was bestowed with 'super' status.

Natalia Vodianova is also constantly referred to as 'supermodel', and although I love her, IMHO this has much to do with the fact that she married and had kids with a very rich, titled man (in a sort of 'fairytale romance' that appeals to people) and became a regular on the NY social circuit.

Today's top models are better at their jobs then Naomi could ever dream of.
Naomi should remember her place, as used leftovers.

McNeil for the win!:mowhawk:

I really don't like this Agyness girl,i don't see what's the appeal with her.

I don't get how people on this thread are denying that Naomi has had any success or that she is good at her job. Even if you don't like her, she is a very successful model, at 38 (let's be honest, it's about 107 in model years) she is still in demand, despite the fickleness of the industry and despite all the bad press she gets. I'm not a fan but she probably knows the industry better than most as she has worked in it for over 20 years. So it's not like she doesn't know what she's talking about. It's likely that few models of the moment will be as in demand and successful as Naomi in the modeling industry when they are 38 (or even in demand and successful at all). People should separate her personality from her comments because as many people in this thread have agreed, there is a lot of truth in them.

And I do have to give her snaps for the fact that her comments about the lack of dark-skinned models sparked a lot of debate, which is always a good thing.

Naomi is 100%, people started to use the term supermodel for every model who did something in her career and many are doing so, but not all of them can be as super and Naomi,Linda or Claudia. The only one that gets close is of course Gisele, then maybe Daria and Carmen Kass. The rest are very good, but far from that term. Kate Moss achieved this status, but after too many major fashion covers and campaigns.
Agynes is a great model, but she is the type that is too edgy to be a supermodel, she can not even walk, she is not elegant, she is not feminine, she can not be like Linda, never!!! Her highlights are her Uk and Italian Vogue covers and her Armani campaigns. She is just hype and interesting, but she will not last for more than a few seasons.
We all forgot all these Brazilian girls who still work and deserve more than any other new model the term supermodel! How can you even mention the name Lily Cole when you talk about supermodels, she will never be there, such ugly girls can never be supermodels, they are lucky they can get jobs, but supermodels...come on, it seems the person who would soncider Lily a supermodel has no clue about what this means!
But this is just a silly game of words, why do we have to label models any way! They are models, they are too many, we like some more, others not so much, but they would be there, do their job and hope to land the best jobs they can have...whenever a new supermodel appears, we will all hear about it!

there are some models out there who deserve more than Naomi to be considered supermodels

why was she a supermodel? her personality is awful and she's not even attractive! don't tell me she's versatile and poses well many of us can do that
:blink::o:huh: WOW i am absoloutely shocked by this comment!!!!

Why is she a Supermodel? Are you serious? Just check her body of work it speaks for itself and who said models have to have cutescy, sweet personalities?I dont get that, couldnt care less that she is a crazy b*tch in her private life but she has EARNED her place in fashion history and is a true fashion icon, no one gave it to her on a plate she did it for herself because she is a good model. If your theory of "many of us can pose" would be true then there would be no need for models at all. And i wont go into is she or isnt she attractive since we all have different standards but for me she is one of the most beautiful women i have ever seen.

And who are the models out there that deserve to be called Supermodel more than Naomi? Can you give examples?

I agree with everything she said here and thats a first for me,i usually just think she is bitching for publicity but she didnt say anything bad here or dissed other models, its true. The type of model superstars like Naomi come only every few generations.

If McNeil has ever taken a picture even half as alive as say, Naomi's latest i-D cover (which isn't even among Naomi's best) I'll buy a LV bag -_-. Naomi knows her place -- as a supermodel who can land covers, bag major campaigns and command headlines over a decade after her career peak. What's McNeil doing? Express? Impressive.

It's completely unfair to compare the two really, one a seasoned veteran who worked hard and fought (ha ha) for her opportunities while the current crop (including McNeil) isn't being given those chances and doesn't appear to be fighting for them. It's perfectly reasonable for you not to be a fan of Naomi Campbell's work. But it only comes off as sad and deluded when you try to belittle her and her position in the fashion world. It can't be denied -- she's helped to shape fashion history. She doesn't have to dream because she lives it.

Doing a "better job" isn't enough to be a super, never has, never will be. This is fashion, sweetheart, not a Xerox office.

Yeh, that's the most expressive she'll ever get, I wager. Unless Freja can teach her a thing or two.

Still, despite the hype, nothing can change the fact that her eyes are upside down. She's the ultimate example of this fantastic body hailed to be a supermodel despite a truly weird face....it's hype, it can't work.

McNeil can't be a supermodel - all supermodels have great smiles. When she smiles it's like looking into the jaws of a shark.

Sasha should date Johnny Depp...
